May Day: A Holiday for Workers

On May 1st, people around the world celebrate workers and their important rights.

What Is May Day?

May Day is a special holiday for workers around the world. People celebrate it on May 1st every year. The day honors people who work in factories, offices, schools, and farms. It is also called International Workers' Day. Many countries make it a public holiday, so people do not go to work.

A Sad Story from Chicago

The history of May Day began in the United States. In 1886, workers in the city of Chicago asked for better pay and shorter hours. They went on strike to show their demands. Sadly, there was violence and many people died. Today, this sad day is a memorial for those workers.

Why We Celebrate Workers

Workers are the people who build our cities, grow our food, and teach our children. The holiday reminds us that all labor is important. It also reminds us to fight for fair pay and good working conditions. Without workers, the world cannot run.

How People Celebrate

In many countries, people have big parades in the streets. Workers and unions march together and carry flags and signs. Some families enjoy a day off and spend time together. In some places, there are picnics, music, and speeches about workers' rights. These happy events are now a tradition in many places.

May Day Around the World

Different countries celebrate May Day in different ways. In France, people give lilies of the valley as a small gift to friends. In Germany, there are big rallies and protests in the streets. In China, it is a three-day holiday. But in every country, the meaning is the same: workers matter.
