Present Simple: Things We Do Every Day
How to talk about your habits and routines in English
Explanation
The Present Simple is the tense we use for things we do every day — our habits and routines. We also use it for facts that are always true.
The verb form is simple. With I, you, we and they, we use the base verb. With he, she and it, we add -s or -es to the end of the verb.
We often put a frequency adverb in the sentence. These words tell us how often we do something: always, usually, often, sometimes, never. They usually go after the subject and before the main verb.
Remember: I work / She works. Easy!
Examples
Read these everyday sentences. The main verb is highlighted.
- I drink coffee every morning.
- She works in a hospital.
- They play football on Saturdays.
- He watches TV after dinner.
- We go to bed at ten o'clock.
- My cat eats fish every day.
- The bus leaves at eight o'clock.
Common mistakes
Be careful with these typical errors:
- ❌ She go to school. → ✅ She goes to school. (Add -es after -o, -s, -x, -ch, -sh.)
- ❌ I am eat breakfast every day. → ✅ I eat breakfast every day. (Do not use 'am' + verb-ing for habits.)
- ❌ Does she works here? → ✅ Does she work here? (After 'does', use the base verb.)
- ❌ She goes always to school. → ✅ She always goes to school. (Frequency adverbs go before the main verb.)
In real life
A short conversation about daily routines.
Maria: What time do you get up every day?
Tom: I usually get up at 7 o'clock. I always brush my teeth and eat breakfast.
Maria: Do you go to work by bus?
Tom: Yes, I do. How about you?
Maria: I walk to work. I never take the bus. But sometimes I go by bike.
