Going To: Plans for the Future

Going To: Plans for the Future

A2 Grammar 58 sentences
Going To: Plans for the Future 0 / 58

Use 'going to' to talk about your plans and to predict what you think will happen.

Explanation

Use going to to talk about the future. We use it for two main ideas:

  • Plans — things you have already decided to do.
  • Predictions — what you think will happen, usually when you can see evidence now.

The form is simple:

subject + am / is / are + going to + base verb

Look at the base verb (the simple form of the verb, like go, eat, play). After going to, the verb does not change. We do not add -s, -ing, or -ed.

Common time words with going to: tomorrow, tonight, this weekend, next week, next month, soon.

Examples

Plans (decide before):

  • I am going to study English this year.
  • She is going to cook dinner tonight.
  • We are going to visit my parents next weekend.
  • They are going to move to a new city soon.

Predictions (with evidence now):

  • Look at the cloudy sky. It is going to rain.
  • Be careful! You are going to fall.
  • Don't worry — she is going to pass the exam. She studies a lot.

In real life

A short dialog between two friends, Mia and Leo:

Mia: Hi Leo! What are you going to do this weekend?

Leo: On Saturday, I am going to visit my grandmother. On Sunday, I am going to play football with the kids.

Mia: Sounds fun! What are you going to cook for dinner tonight?

Leo: I am going to make pasta. My sister is going to bring the salad.

Mia: Great! Look at those black clouds — I think it is going to rain later.

Leo: Oh no! Then I am going to take my umbrella.
