القصة

The Garden Ghost

Liam had never believed in ghosts. When his mum suggested he take a summer job at Blackwood Manor, he rolled his eyes. “It’s just an old house with a garden,” he said. But the pay was good, and the bus ride was short, so he agreed.

On his first morning, Mrs. Holloway, the manor’s caretaker, handed him a pair of shears. “The west garden’s gone wild,” she said. “Start there.” Liam groaned. Weeding was not his idea of fun. Still, he trudged off, earphones in, music blasting.

By midday, the sun was high, and Liam’s shirt was damp with sweat. He wiped his forehead and glanced up. That’s when he saw her—a girl in a pale dress, standing near the old oak tree. She looked about his age, but her clothes were strange, like something from a history book. Liam pulled out his earphones. “Hello?” he called.

The girl didn’t answer. She just stared at him, then turned and walked away, vanishing behind the overgrown hedges. Liam’s heart pounded. He ran to the spot where she’d disappeared, but there was no one there. Just a rusted garden gate, half-hidden by ivy.

Back at the manor, Liam told Mrs. Holloway what he’d seen. She chuckled. “Oh, that’s just the garden ghost. She’s been around for years. No one knows who she is.” Liam frowned. “You mean you’ve seen her too?” Mrs. Holloway shook her head. “No, but the last gardener did. And the one before that. She’s harmless, dear. Just a story.”

Liam wasn’t convinced. That night, he searched online for “Blackwood Manor ghost.” Dozens of results popped up—old newspaper articles, forum posts, even a few blurry photos. Most people thought it was a hoax, but one story caught his eye. In 1892, a girl named Eleanor had gone missing from the manor. Her body was never found.

The next day, Liam returned to the garden. He brought a notebook and a camera, just in case. The girl appeared again, this time closer. She beckoned to him, then pointed at the ground. Liam’s breath caught. Beneath the oak tree, half-buried in the dirt, was a small metal box. He dug it out with his hands. Inside was a locket, tarnished with age. When he opened it, he gasped. The photo inside was of the girl—Eleanor.

Liam ran to Mrs. Holloway. “I found something,” he said, showing her the locket. Her eyes widened. “That’s Eleanor’s. Her family thought it was lost forever.” That evening, Liam helped Mrs. Holloway call the local historical society. They came the next day, and after some digging, they found Eleanor’s remains beneath the tree.

That night, Liam sat in the garden one last time. The air was still, and the oak tree cast long shadows. He smiled as he felt a cool breeze brush his cheek. Somewhere, he knew, Eleanor was finally at peace. And as for ghosts? Well, maybe they weren’t so unbelievable after all.
