The Great Train Ticket Mix-Up

The Wrong Platform

On a rainy Tuesday morning, Liam stood on Platform 3 at King’s Cross Station, staring at his phone. His ticket to Edinburgh was supposed to leave in ten minutes, but he couldn’t find it anywhere. He checked his pockets—twice. Nothing.

“Blast it,” he muttered. “I must’ve left it on the café table.”

Just then, a woman with a bright red scarf bumped into him. “Sorry!” she said, juggling a coffee cup and a heavy suitcase. “This place is a madhouse today.”

Liam stepped back. “No harm done.” He glanced at her ticket—Glasgow, 8:45. His train. His time. An idea struck him. “Listen, I’ve lost my ticket. Would you mind if I…?” He nodded at the ticket in her hand.

The woman, whose name tag read “Dr. Priya Mehta,” frowned. “Oh dear. Well, I suppose you could buy another one?” But the ticket machine was broken, and the queue at the counter snaked halfway across the station.

“Please,” Liam said. “I’ll pay you back. Double.”

Priya sighed. “Fine. But you owe me a coffee when we sort this out.” She handed him the ticket.

Liam grinned. “Deal.” He dashed towards the train before she could change her mind.

The Wrong Destination

Three hours later, Liam’s grin had vanished. The hills outside his window were too green, the accents too broad. He pulled out his phone and groaned. The train wasn’t heading to Edinburgh. It was going to Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Priya sat in a quiet carriage, sipping tea and marking student essays. She only realised something was wrong when the conductor announced, “Next stop, Edinburgh.” Her ticket said Glasgow. She checked her bag—no mistake. The ticket was definitely for Glasgow.

“Oh no,” she whispered. “That man… he took my ticket!”

She called the station, but the line was busy. She tried Liam’s number—no answer. With a sigh, she opened her laptop and got to work. Maybe she could finish her essays before she had to sort out this mess.

A Race Against Time

At Glasgow Central, Liam sprinted to the ticket office. “I need to get to Edinburgh—now!” he panted.

The clerk raised an eyebrow. “Next train’s in an hour. Single or return?”

“Single. And fast!” Liam handed over his credit card, then checked his phone. Three missed calls from Priya. He rang her back. “Priya! I’m so sorry. I’ll be on the next train. I’ll fix this, I promise.”

“You’d better,” Priya said, but she sounded more amused than angry. “I’ve just spent two hours on a train to the wrong city because of you.”

Liam winced. “I’ll make it up to you. Dinner? My treat.”

Priya laughed. “Only if you’re buying the coffee too.”

By the time Liam arrived in Edinburgh, Priya was waiting on the platform, tapping her foot. She held out a fresh ticket. “Here. Yours.”

Liam took it, relieved. “Thanks. And… I’m really sorry.”

Priya smiled. “Don’t be. It’s not every day I get a free train ride and a new friend.”

Liam grinned. “So… about that coffee?”
