The Ghost of the Grand Pier

The Stormy Night

In the summer of 1923, the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare was the brightest spot on the coast. Every evening, crowds gathered to watch the famous magician, Victor Vale, perform his daring tricks. But one stormy August night, everything changed. During his final act, a fierce wind tore through the theatre. The lights flickered, the stage shook—and Victor vanished. No one ever saw him again.

The Challenge

Ninety years later, four friends—Liam, Jess, Tom, and Aisha—stood at the entrance of the abandoned pier. The wooden boards creaked under their feet as the wind howled around them. The place had been closed for decades, but strange stories kept appearing online. People claimed they’d seen a shadowy figure near the old theatre, heard faint music, or felt an icy hand brush their shoulder.

“Right,” said Liam, shining his torch. “We’ve got one hour before the tide comes in. Let’s find out if the ghost is real.”

The Discovery

The friends split up. Jess and Aisha headed to the theatre, while Liam and Tom searched the arcade. The air smelled of salt and damp wood. Suddenly, Aisha gasped. “Look!” she whispered. On the stage, a single playing card—the Ace of Hearts—lay face up. Jess picked it up. “Victor’s signature trick,” she murmured. “He always used this card.”

At the same moment, Liam’s torch flickered. A cold draft swirled around him. “Did you feel that?” he called. Tom shook his head, but his hands trembled. Then, from the theatre, they heard a soft melody—a music box playing an old tune.

The Truth

The friends rushed back to the stage. The music grew louder, and the air turned freezing. A shadowy figure appeared in the spotlight—Victor Vale, his face pale, his eyes sad. He raised a hand, pointing to the floorboards beneath them. Jess knelt down and pried one loose. Underneath lay a small metal box. Inside was a note: “Forgive me. I hid the truth to protect the innocent. The real thief was—” The rest was unreadable, washed away by time.

As quickly as he’d appeared, Victor faded. The music stopped. The friends stood in silence, their hearts pounding. They never told anyone what they’d seen. But sometimes, on quiet nights, they’d visit the pier and leave a single Ace of Hearts on the stage—for the ghost who’d finally found peace.
