The Maypole Vanishes
Every year, the village of Meadowgrove prepared for its favourite spring festival. The highlight was always the tall, colourful maypole that stood proudly in the square. But this year, on the morning of the big day, the maypole was gone!
Ten-year-old Lily was the first to notice. She ran to her friends, Tom and Mia, who were setting up bunting near the empty spot. "It’s disappeared!" she cried. "Who would take it?"
Tom scratched his head. "Maybe it’s a prank. Let’s look for clues."
A Trail of Ribbons
The children searched the square. Near the post where the maypole had stood, Mia spotted something—a bright red ribbon tangled in the grass. "Look!" she said. "This must be from the maypole!"
Following the ribbon, they found another clue: a muddy boot print near the bakery. "Someone big walked this way," Tom said. "And they were in a hurry!"
The trail led them to the old mill at the edge of the village. As they crept closer, they heard voices. "We’ll hide it here until after the festival," a man said gruffly. "No one will think to look in the mill!"
The Maypole’s Return
Lily’s eyes widened. "It’s Mr. Grumble! He always complains about the festival being too noisy."
The children tiptoed inside. There, in the dim light, stood the maypole—still wrapped in its ribbons. Mia whispered, "We have to get it back before the dancing starts!"
Tom had an idea. "Let’s tell the villagers. They’ll help us carry it!"
Soon, the whole village gathered at the mill. With laughter and cheers, they lifted the maypole and marched it back to the square. Mr. Grumble, caught red-handed, grumbled but finally smiled. "Fine, fine. But next year, keep the music down!"
As the sun set, the maypole stood tall once more. The festival began with dancing, music, and joy. And Lily, Tom, and Mia? They were the heroes of Meadowgrove!
