The Legend of the Loch Ness Lego

The Model That Vanished

On the first morning of their Scottish holiday, ten-year-old Jake carefully placed his newest Lego model on the windowsill of their Loch Ness hotel room. It was a bright green Loch Ness Monster, complete with bumpy back plates and a cheeky grin. “That’s the best Nessie I’ve ever built,” he told his little sister, Mia.

“It’s nearly as good as the real one,” Mia giggled. “If the real one was made of plastic.”

Jake rolled his eyes. “You’ll see. One day I’ll spot the real Nessie, and then you’ll believe me.”

After breakfast, the family set off on a boat tour. The guide, a cheerful woman named Fiona, pointed out castle ruins and told stories of ancient kelpies. Jake leaned over the rail, scanning the dark water. No sign of Nessie—real or Lego.

When they returned to the hotel, Jake rushed upstairs. The windowsill was empty. His model was gone. He searched under the bed, inside his rucksack, even in the mini-fridge. Nothing.

The Cave Behind the Waterfall

“Maybe a seagull stole it,” Mia suggested.

“Seagulls don’t like Lego,” Jake muttered. He stormed outside, fists clenched. That’s when he noticed Fiona sitting on a bench, sketching in a notebook.

“Lost something?” she asked, without looking up.

Jake sighed. “My Lego Nessie. It was on the windowsill.”

Fiona closed her notebook. “Ah. That explains the clatter I heard last night. Come with me.”

She led him down a narrow path behind the hotel, past a tumbling waterfall, and into a damp cave. The walls glistened with tiny crystals. In the centre of the cave sat Jake’s Lego model—perfectly intact, surrounded by a circle of smooth stones.

“I found it on the rocks this morning,” Fiona said. “Thought it might belong to someone who believes in legends.”

A New Kind of Monster

Jake picked up his model, brushing off a speck of moss. “Thanks. But why bring it here?”

Fiona smiled. “This cave’s been a hiding place for centuries. Smugglers, poets, even a few monsters—real or imagined. I reckon your Nessie fits right in.”

Mia’s voice echoed from the cave entrance. “Jake! Mum says we’re having shortbread!”

As they walked back, Jake held his Lego Nessie a little tighter. Maybe the real monster was still out there. Or maybe, just maybe, the best legends were the ones you helped create yourself.
