The Mystery of the Missing Market Garden

Every autumn, the villagers of Little Meadows looked forward to the Harvest Festival. This year, the star attraction was meant to be the giant pumpkins grown by old Mr. Higgins. He had spent months tending them, and they were the biggest anyone had ever seen. But on the morning of the festival, disaster struck.

Twelve-year-old Jake was the first to notice. He had promised to help Mr. Higgins set up his stall, but when he arrived at the allotment, the pumpkins were gone. All that remained were deep tyre tracks in the mud and a single, muddy boot print.

“This is a catastrophe!” Mr. Higgins cried, wringing his hands. “Those pumpkins were my ticket to the county fair!”

Jake’s friends, Priya and Tom, hurried over when they heard the news. “We’ll find them,” Priya said firmly. “No one steals pumpkins without leaving a trail.”

The three friends followed the tyre tracks out of the allotment and down the lane. They led to the edge of the village, where the road split in two. “Which way now?” Tom wondered.

Priya crouched down, examining the ground. “Look—there’s a bit of pumpkin flesh on this branch. The thief must have taken the left fork.”

They hurried on until they reached a ramshackle shed on the outskirts of the village. Through a crack in the door, Jake spotted a familiar orange glow. “The pumpkins!” he whispered. “They’re in there!”

But before they could investigate further, a voice boomed behind them. “What are you children doing here?” It was Mr. Grady, the village’s other gardener. He was known for his bad temper—and his jealousy of Mr. Higgins’ success.

Tom gulped. “We, uh, were just passing by.”

Mr. Grady narrowed his eyes. “Well, pass by somewhere else. This is private property.”

As they walked away, Priya muttered, “He’s hiding something. I’m sure of it.”

The next day, the friends returned to the shed with a plan. While Jake distracted Mr. Grady by asking for gardening tips, Priya and Tom sneaked inside. They found not only the missing pumpkins but also a stack of posters advertising Mr. Grady’s own pumpkin display at the festival.

“He stole them to win the prize himself!” Tom gasped.

Priya nodded. “We have to tell Mr. Higgins.”

When the truth came out, the villagers were shocked. Mr. Grady tried to deny it, but the evidence was overwhelming. In the end, he confessed and returned the pumpkins. Mr. Higgins won first prize at the county fair, and the friends were hailed as heroes.

As for Mr. Grady? He spent the next year growing his own pumpkins—under the watchful eyes of the entire village.
