The Curious Affair of the Cornish Cliff Notes

The First Clue

On a blustery Tuesday in May, composer Clara Hart stood on the edge of a Cornish cliff, her dark curls whipping in the wind. Beside her, her best friend, Tom, squinted at the jagged rocks below.

"Look there!" Tom pointed. Carved into the stone, almost hidden by seaweed, were three musical notes: G, A, B.

Clara’s eyes widened. "That’s the start of The Sailor’s Lament—a shanty that’s been lost for over a century!" She pulled out her notebook, scribbling furiously. "But why carve it here?"

Tom grinned. "Maybe it’s a treasure hunt. Let’s see where it leads."

The Second Clue

The next morning, they returned to the cliff with a ladder and a torch. Climbing carefully, Clara spotted another set of notes further along the rockface: C, D, E.

"It’s the next part of the melody!" she exclaimed. "But we need the full tune to find the rest."

Tom scratched his head. "The old fisherman at the pub said something about a cave near here. Maybe the notes lead there."

Clara nodded. "Worth a try."

The Final Discovery

By afternoon, they’d found the cave—a damp, echoing space hidden behind a waterfall. Inside, the walls were covered in more notes, forming the complete shanty. At the back, an old chest sat half-buried in sand.

Tom pried it open. Inside lay a yellowed sheet of music—the original Sailor’s Lament, signed by its composer in 1823.

Clara gasped. "This is incredible! We’ve just uncovered a piece of history."

Tom laughed. "And all because you noticed a few notes on a cliff."

Clara smiled. "Sometimes the best music is the kind you have to hunt for."
