The Secret of the Scottish Standing Stones

The Campfire Plan

Liam, Zoe, and Jake had been planning their camping trip for weeks. The three friends wanted one last adventure before school started again. They chose a quiet spot near the old standing stones in the Scottish Highlands—perfect for stargazing and telling spooky stories.

“Are you sure this is the right place?” Jake asked, shining his torch at the map. “It looks a bit… creepy.”

Zoe laughed. “That’s the whole point! Besides, the stones are supposed to be thousands of years old. Imagine the stories they could tell!”

Liam rolled his eyes but smiled. “Fine, but if I hear anything strange tonight, I’m blaming you two.”

The Whispers in the Dark

That night, as the friends sat around the campfire, the wind picked up. The flames flickered, casting long shadows on the ancient stones. Suddenly, Zoe sat up straight. “Did you hear that?” she whispered.

“Hear what?” Jake asked, looking around nervously.

“Shh!” Zoe held up a hand. A soft, whispering sound drifted through the air—words in a language none of them recognised. The friends exchanged worried glances.

“Maybe it’s just the wind,” Liam said, though he didn’t sound convinced.

Zoe shook her head. “The wind doesn’t sound like… like people talking.”

The Legend Comes to Life

The next morning, the friends decided to explore the stones. Zoe noticed strange carvings at the base of one—symbols that seemed to tell a story. She pulled out her phone and took a photo.

“Look at this,” she said, showing the others. “It’s like a map—or a warning.”

Jake frowned. “A warning about what?”

Just then, an elderly man approached them. “Ah, so you’ve found the old tale,” he said with a knowing smile. “Those stones aren’t just rocks. They mark the resting place of an ancient clan. Legend says their spirits still guard the land.”

The friends listened, wide-eyed, as the man explained how the whispers were the voices of the past, carried on the wind. “They’re not dangerous,” he assured them. “Just lonely. They like visitors.”

A Night to Remember

That evening, the friends sat by the fire again, this time unafraid. As the whispers returned, Zoe smiled. “It’s like they’re welcoming us,” she said.

Liam grinned. “Well, I guess some stories *are* true.”

Jake nodded. “And some places are magic.”

As they packed up the next morning, the friends knew this wouldn’t be their last trip to the standing stones. After all, some secrets were meant to be shared—especially with old friends.
