The Curious Case of the Cotswold Cheese Heist

It was a quiet Tuesday morning in the village of Lower Slaughter, nestled in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. The birds were singing, the sun was shining, and Mrs. Higgins was opening her tiny farm shop as she did every day. But when she reached for the prized wheel of Double Gloucester cheese—the last one from last year’s batch—she gasped. It was gone. Vanished without a trace. Well, almost without a trace.

“There’s a trail of crumbs!” cried young Tom, the baker’s son, who had popped in for a loaf of bread. Sure enough, tiny orange crumbs led out of the shop, across the cobblestone street, and straight towards the old windmill on the hill. The windmill hadn’t turned in decades, and most villagers thought it was just a pile of rotten wood. But today, it seemed, it was the scene of a crime.

Mrs. Higgins, Tom, and a handful of curious neighbours followed the crumbs. The trail wound up the hill, past grazing sheep, and right to the windmill’s creaky door. Tom pushed it open. Inside, the air smelled of damp wood and—cheese. There, in the centre of the dusty floor, sat the missing wheel, half-eaten and surrounded by a very guilty-looking badger.

The Great Badger Bungle

“Well, I never!” said Mrs. Higgins. The badger, which the villagers recognised as old Mr. Brock from the nearby woods, looked up with cheese crumbs on his whiskers. He didn’t seem the least bit sorry.

“He must’ve rolled it all the way here,” said Tom, scratching his head. “But how?”

“Badgers are cleverer than they look,” said Farmer Giles, who had joined the group. “And stronger. He probably thought it was a giant snack for the winter.”

The villagers burst out laughing. The mystery was solved, but the cheese was ruined. Or was it?

A Cheesy Solution

“We can’t sell it now,” sighed Mrs. Higgins. “But we can’t let it go to waste either.”

Tom had an idea. “What if we make a festival out of it? The Great Cotswold Cheese Chase!”

And so, they did. The next weekend, the village held its first-ever cheese festival. There were cheese-tasting stalls, a cheese-rolling race down the hill (which Mr. Brock won, of course), and even a badge-making station for the children. The ruined wheel was turned into a giant fondue, and everyone had a slice of bread to dip in it.

As for Mr. Brock, he became a local celebrity. Mrs. Higgins even left a small wheel of cheese by the windmill every week—just in case he got peckish. And though the villagers never solved the mystery of how a badger could roll a heavy cheese wheel up a hill, they agreed on one thing: Lower Slaughter had never had so much fun.

The end.
