The Vanishing of the Village Postman

The Last Delivery

Every morning for twenty years, Tom Briggs cycled the same quiet lanes of Little Marsh. Rain or shine, he delivered letters, parcels, and the occasional birthday card. The villagers adored him—always a smile, always a kind word. But one Tuesday in October, Tom vanished.

It started with a phone call. Mrs. Harper rang the post office at half past nine. “Where’s Tom?” she asked. “He’s never late.” By noon, the police were searching the fields. They found Tom’s red bicycle leaning against a gate near Blackberry Wood. His satchel lay on the ground, bulging with letters. Oddly, every envelope was addressed to the same person: Miss Eleanor Vane, Rose Cottage, Little Marsh.

The Mysterious Letters

“That’s impossible,” said the postmistress, Mrs. Peabody. “Rose Cottage has been empty for years. No one’s lived there since old Miss Vane died.” The police checked the letters. They were all recent—bills, invitations, even a postcard from Spain. But why had Tom kept them?

Young PC Dawson had an idea. “Maybe he was delivering them somewhere else,” he suggested. The team drove to Rose Cottage. The garden was overgrown, but the front door stood slightly open. Inside, they found a single room, dusty but neat. On the table lay a stack of old letters—all addressed to Miss Eleanor Vane. And at the bottom, a faded photograph of a young woman in a postman’s uniform.

The Secret Keeper

“Tom’s mother,” whispered Mrs. Peabody. “She was the postwoman here before him. She died when he was just a boy.” The truth slowly unfolded. Tom had been delivering the letters to his mother’s old cottage, keeping her memory alive. But why had he disappeared?

The answer came the next day. A hiker found Tom sitting by the river, soaked but unharmed. “I just needed a day,” he admitted. “All those letters—it got too much.” The villagers gathered around, relieved. Mrs. Harper pressed a cup of tea into his hands. “You’re part of this village, Tom,” she said. “We’ll help you sort it out.”

And so they did. The letters were finally delivered—to the village archive, where they belonged. Tom returned to his rounds, lighter in heart. And from that day on, he always took Sundays off.
