The Curious Tale of the Talking Parrot

The Parrot Arrives

One rainy Tuesday in the little seaside town of Brightport, a new bird appeared in Mr. Higgins’ pet shop. It was a bright green parrot with a splash of red on its tail. The sign above its cage read: “Captain” – Speaks Your Language!

“Where did you get him?” asked young Lily, who helped in the shop after school. Mr. Higgins scratched his head. “A fisherman brought him in this morning. Said he found the bird on his boat, squawking directions like a sat-nav.”

Lily laughed. “Directions to where?”

“That’s the funny thing,” said Mr. Higgins. “The fisherman didn’t know. The parrot just kept saying the same thing over and over.” He leaned closer. “‘Three paces past the old oak, turn left at the wishing well, dig where the gulls tell.’”

The Mystery Deepens

For days, customers came and went, but no one could make sense of the parrot’s words. Then, on Friday afternoon, an elderly woman named Mrs. Peabody shuffled into the shop. She stopped dead in front of Captain’s cage.

“Well, I never!” she gasped. “That’s the old Mariner’s Rhyme. My grandfather used to say it—before he vanished at sea.”

Lily’s eyes widened. “Vanished? What happened?”

Mrs. Peabody sighed. “He was a treasure hunter. Left a map with those exact directions, but no one ever found the spot. The parrot must’ve heard him years ago.”

The Treasure Hunt

The next morning, Lily and Mrs. Peabody set off with a shovel and Captain perched on Lily’s shoulder. They followed the rhyme: three paces past the old oak in the park, a left turn at the crumbling wishing well, and then to the cliffs where gulls circled overhead.

“Here!” squawked Captain. “Dig where the gulls tell!”

Lily dug. Minutes later, her shovel clinked against something metal. They brushed away the dirt to reveal a small chest. Inside was a handful of gold coins—and a faded note in Mrs. Peabody’s grandfather’s handwriting: “For those who listen.”

A Happy Ending

Back in town, the story spread like wildfire. Mr. Higgins gave Captain a new sign: “Official Treasure Guide – Ask Me How!” Mrs. Peabody used the coins to fix up the old wishing well, and Lily? She kept visiting Captain every day—just in case he remembered another rhyme.

And if you walk past the pet shop on a quiet afternoon, you might still hear him muttering: “Three paces past the old oak…”
