The Secret of the Sealed Signal Box

For thirty years, the old signal box at the edge of Marston Station had stood empty. Paint peeled from its wooden walls, and ivy crept up the cracked windows. No one had touched the door since the last signalman retired in 1993—or so everyone thought.

One misty October morning, Liam, a young railway worker, arrived early to check the tracks. As he passed the signal box, he noticed something odd. The heavy padlock, rusted shut for decades, now hung open. His heart pounded. Had someone broken in?

Curious, Liam pushed the door. It creaked open, revealing a sight that made his jaw drop. The inside was spotless. Dust-free shelves lined the walls, and a small table held a steaming pot of tea. Beside it lay a single biscuit on a chipped saucer. The air smelled of fresh paint and lavender.

Liam’s radio crackled. “You there, Liam?” It was his supervisor, Dave. “We’ve got a problem on Platform 2.”

“On my way,” Liam replied, but his eyes stayed on the signal box. He pulled the door shut, promising himself he’d return later.

The Mystery Deepens

That evening, Liam asked the station’s oldest employee, Maggie, about the signal box. “Oh, that place,” she said, stirring her tea. “Old Mr. Harris used to work there. They say he never left, even after they closed it down. Just vanished one day.”

Liam frowned. “Vanished? But the tea was fresh this morning.”

Maggie’s eyes twinkled. “Maybe he’s still looking after the place. Some folks say the railway never really lets you go.”

Determined to solve the mystery, Liam returned to the signal box the next day. This time, he found a note tucked under the teapot: “Mind the 5:15. It’s running late.” Sure enough, when Liam checked the timetable, the 5:15 to London was delayed by ten minutes. How had the note known?

The Truth Revealed

Liam decided to hide and watch the signal box. As the clock struck midnight, the door creaked open. An elderly man in a faded signalman’s uniform stepped inside. He moved slowly, checking dials and flipping switches that hadn’t worked in years. Then, with a sigh, he sat down, poured himself a cup of tea, and waited.

Liam’s breath caught. He stepped forward. “Mr. Harris?”

The old man turned, startled. “Ah. You’ve found me out.” He smiled sadly. “I promised I’d keep the trains running, even after they closed my box. Guess I couldn’t let go.”

Liam grinned. “How about you let us help? We could reopen the signal box—properly this time.”

Mr. Harris’s eyes lit up. “You’d do that?”

A month later, the signal box was restored. Mr. Harris taught Liam and the others how to manage the signals, just as he’d done for decades. And every morning, without fail, a fresh pot of tea waited on the table—though no one ever saw who made it.
