In English, we use object pronouns when a person or thing receives the action of a verb. They come after the verb, not before it. This is different from subject pronouns (I, you, he, she, it, we, they), which we use when the person does the action.

Look at this table. The first column is the subject (who does the action). The second column is the object (who receives it).

Subject pronoun Object pronoun Example
I me She likes me.
you you I know you.
he him We invited him.
she her He called her.
it it I love it!
we us They invited us.
they them I saw them.

Notice:

  • After the verb, the pronoun changes form.
  • "I like Tom" → "Tom likes me" (not "Tom likes I")
  • "We see her" → "She sees us" (not "She sees we")
  • "He loves music" → "Music makes him happy"

We use object pronouns in three places:

  1. After verbs: I like him. (not "I like he")
  2. After prepositions: with me, for them, to us, at her, about it
  3. In short answers: "Who called?" "Me."

A common mistake is using subject pronouns after verbs. Remember: if the pronoun is doing the action, use a subject pronoun (I, he, she, it, we, they). If the pronoun is receiving the action, use an object pronoun (me, you, him, her, it, us, them).

Let's look at a music example: "I love this song. Do you love it too?" — "it" is the object of "love". Another: "My friends love rock. I love them too." — "them" is the object of "love". Try saying these out loud and notice where the object pronoun falls — always right after the verb or preposition.

ضمائر المفعول به في الإنجليزي

في اللغة الإنجليزي، عندنا نوعين من الضمائر لازم تفرق ما بينهم كويس. النوع الأول هو ضمائر الفاعل (subject pronouns) - يعني اللي بيعمل الفعل - زي I و you و he و she و it و we و they. التاني هو ضمائر المفعول به (object pronouns) - يعني اللي بيتقبل الفعل - ودي اللي بنستخدمها بعد الفعل مش قبله.

الفرق باختصار

لو الضمير بيعمل الفعل → استخدم ضمير الفاعل. لو الضمير بيتقبل الفعل → استخدم ضمير المفعول به. خلينا نشوف في سياق الموسيقى:

  • "I like classical music. My brother likes it too." — هنا it بتحل محل classical music بعد الفعل likes، فهي مفعول به.
  • "My friends love rock. I love them too." — وthem بتحل محل my friends بعد الفعل love، فهي مفعول به.
  • "She loves jazz." — jazz هي اللي بتتعمل عليها فعل الحب، فهي مفعول به (لكن مفيش ضمير هنا).
  • "Jazz makes her happy." — her هي المفعول به بتاع makes.

ضمير المفعول به بييجي في ٣ أماكن

  • بعد الأفعال: I like him. (مش I like he)
  • بعد حروف الجر: with me, for them, to us, at her, about it
  • في الإجابات القصيرة: "Who called?" — "Me."

الغلطة الشائعة

كتير من المتعلمين بيقعوا في الغلطة دي وبيقولوا "I like he" أو "she likes we" — وده غلط طبعاً. القاعدة بسيطة: لما تشوف الجملة اسأل نفسك — مين بيعمل الفعل؟ ده الفاعل. ومين بيتقبل الفعل؟ ده المفعول به. في التمارين اللي جاية، ركز على الفعل وشوف إيه اللي بعده — ده المكان اللي بييجي فيه ضمير المفعول به.

نصيحة أخيرة

الضمير مش لازم يكون إنسان — ممكن يكون حاجة زي song أو music. في الجملة "I love this song. Do you love it too?"، الضمير it بيرجع لـ this song. وده بالظبط اللي هنتمرن عليه في درس الموسيقى النهاردة.

I like classical music. My brother likes it too.

Notice: 'it' replaces 'classical music'. 'It' is the object of 'likes'.

My friends love rock. I love them, but I prefer jazz.

Notice: 'them' replaces 'my friends'. 'Them' is the object of 'love'.

Required

Look at the two sentences above. What pronoun replaces a noun after a verb like 'like' or 'love'?

Listening

Listening

5 cards

Two friends, Emma and Tom, are making plans for the evening. They are talking on the phone and deciding what to do tonight. Listen to their conversation and answer the questions below.

Prediction: Before you listen, think about your own weekend plans. What do you and your friends usually do? Do you like the same music, or do you prefer different kinds?

Listening strategy: While you listen, don't try to understand every single word. Just listen for the key information: the activity, the kind of music, the meeting place, and the time. People often repeat important information — names, times, and places. Don't be afraid to listen more than once.

In the dialogue, you will also hear object pronouns like "me", "them", "her", and "us". Notice how they sound at the end of sentences: "Do you want to come with me?" and "I know her." These small words are very important — they tell you who is being talked about. For example, "I saw them" means someone saw other people, not the speaker.

Listen for the names of places and the numbers for times. The conversation is friendly and fast, so don't worry if you miss a word. You can always listen again.

After the dialogue, there are three questions to check your understanding. The first is about the main idea (gist): what is happening in the conversation? The second is about specific information: what kind of music do they want to see? The third is about a detail: what time do they meet? Try to answer all three without looking at the script again.

مثلاً Tom سأل: "Where do I meet you?" — ده سؤال مهم، فالإجابة فيه المكان والوقت.

الضمائر في آخر الجملة (Object Pronouns)

في الكلام هتلاحظ ضمائر صغيرة في آخر الجمل:

  • me — "come with me" (تعالى معايا)
  • them — "I saw them" (أنا شفتهم)
  • her — "I know her" (أنا أعرفها)
  • us — "come with us" (تعال معانا)

لما حد يسألك "What kind of music do you like?"، جاوب بحاجة زي "I love rock" أو "I like pop."

نصيحة أخيرة

الحوار سريع وأصحاب بيتكلموا بشكل عادي، متقلقش لو فاتتك كلمة. اسمع الـ dialogue مرتين أو تلاتة، وكل مرة ركز على حاجة مختلفة — مرة على نوع الموسيقى، ومرة على المكان، ومرة على الوقت. كده هتضمن إنك تمسك كل التفاصيل من غير ما تتشتت.

Emma and Tom are on the phone, making plans for the evening.

  1. E

Today we look at two vowel sounds in English: /ɒ/ (a short "o") and /ʌ/ (a short "u"). They sound similar, but they are different sounds. Many learners mix them up, so we will practise them today.

Sound 1: /ɒ/ — like in rock, pop, hot

  • Your mouth is round and open.
  • Your tongue is at the back and low in the mouth.
  • The sound is short.
  • Try it: say "o" but short, like in the word "hot".

Sound 2: /ʌ/ — like in funk, run, fun

  • Your mouth is more relaxed, slightly open.
  • Your tongue is in the middle of the mouth.
  • The sound is short, like a quiet "uh".
  • Try it: say "uh" like in the word "cup".

Music words with /ɒ/: rock, pop, song, hot, top Music words with /ʌ/: funk, sun, but, run, fun, country

Minimal pairs (two words that are the same except for one sound):

  • "rock" /rɒk/ vs "ruck" /rʌk/ — the vowel is different
  • "pop" /pɒp/ vs "pup" /pʌp/
  • "shot" /ʃɒt/ vs "shut" /ʃʌt/
  • "hot" /hɒt/ vs "hut" /hʌt/

The difference is small but important. British English uses these two sounds clearly. Take a moment to feel the shape of your mouth: rounder and more open for /ɒ/, flatter and more relaxed for /ʌ/.

Listen to the words and notice: do you feel your lips move? For /ɒ/, your lips are round. For /ʌ/, your mouth is more open and relaxed. Now try the words: rock, pop, song — then funk, run, fun. Feel the difference in your mouth.

(Minimal Pairs)

ده اسمه minimal pairs، يعني كلمتين شبه بعض بالظبط بس الصوت مختلف:

  • rock /rɒk/ — الصوت المستدير
  • ruck /rʌk/ — الصوت المرتاح

  • pop /pɒp/ vs pup /pʌp/

  • shot /ʃɒt/ vs shut /ʃʌt/
  • hot /hɒt/ vs hut /hʌt/

To say /ɒ/: round your lips, open your mouth, keep the sound short. Examples: rock, pop, song. To say /ʌ/: relax your mouth, open it less wide, say a quick 'uh'. Examples: funk, fun, run.

Required

Listen carefully. Which word do you hear?

  • rock
  • ruck
Required

Say the word 'rock'. Round your lips and keep the sound short.

rock

Required

Say the word 'funk'. Relax your mouth and say a quick 'uh'.

funk

Required

Say the whole sentence. Notice the two different vowel sounds: 'pop' has /ɒ/, 'funk' has /ʌ/.

I love pop music and funk music.

Reading

Reading

6 cards

When you read about music, you often want to know the main idea first. Today we use the strategy of skimming — reading quickly to get the general idea, not every word. Look at the title, the first sentence, and the last sentence. These often tell you the topic.

Here are four key words in the passage. Read them before you start.

Word Part of speech Meaning
festival noun a big event with music, food and people
stage noun the place where musicians play
relaxed adjective calm, not worried
tent noun a temporary shelter made of cloth

Now read the blog post by Sam. What is his favourite music festival? What does he like about it? Who is he going with this year?

Reading tip: You do not need to understand every word. Look for the main idea first (skimming), then read again for details (scanning). The title and first sentence often give you the topic. The last sentence often gives you the feeling or conclusion.

مثلًا: "I love going to a music festival in summer" يعني بحب أروح حفلة موسيقى في الصيف.
  • Stage (ستيدج): المكان العالي اللي الموسيقيين بيغنوا و بيعزفوا عليه قدام الناس. "The band is on the stage now" يعني الفرقة على المسرح دلوقتي.
  • Relaxed (ريلاكسد): معناها هادي و مرتاح و مش متوتر. "I feel relaxed when I listen to jazz" يعني بحس براحة لما أسمع موسيقى الجاز.
  • Tent (تنت): خيمة، مكان مؤقت من القماش بتنام فيه أو تقعد فيه بره البيت. "We put up a tent at the festival" يعني نصبنا خيمة في الحفلة.

نصيحة قبل ما تبدأ:

لما تفتح البوست بتاع سام، مش لازم تفهم كل كلمة. ابدأ اقرأ بسرعة عشان تلاقي إجابة السؤالين: إيه الفستيفل المفضل عنده؟ و مين هيبقى معاه السنة دي؟ بعد كده اقرأ تاني مرة بتمعن أكتر عشان تلتقط التفاصيل الحلوة. خد وقتك و ابدأ.

Read this blog post by Sam about his favourite music festival.

قراءة مقال سام عن المهرجان الموسيقي

في الجزء ده، هتقرأ مقال قصير كاتبه واحد اسمه Sam عن المهرجان الموسيقي المفضل عنده. المقالات الشخصية زي دي مفيدة جداً لتعلم اللغة، لأنها بتستخدم اللغة الطبيعية اللي الناس بتكتب بيها فعلاً في الحياة اليومية.

استراتيجية القراءة (Reading Strategy)

When you talk about music with friends, these phrases are very useful. Read them and try to remember them. Then listen to the model dialogue and practise the sentences yourself.

Phrase When to use it
What kind of music do you like? asking a question
I love / I prefer / I don't really like ... saying your opinion
My favourite band / singer is ... giving a name
This song is very catchy. describing a song
Do you want to go to a concert? making a plan
I listen to it every day. talking about a habit

Speaking tip: In a real conversation, you don't need perfect grammar. Try to:

  1. Listen carefully to the other person.
  2. Use short answers first (e.g. "I love pop.").
  3. Add a reason if you can (e.g. "It's so catchy!").
  4. Ask a question back to keep the conversation going.

In the next steps, you will first listen to a model dialogue, then read it, then speak the key sentences yourself, and finally have a live conversation with a new friend.

إزاي تتكلّم عن الموسيقى بالإنجليزي

الكلام عن الموسيقى من أسهل المواضيع اللي تخليك تبدأ محادثة مع حد جديد. تعالى نتعلّم الجمل اللي هتحتاجها في الموقف ده.

1. فتح الموضوع بسؤال بسيط أول جملة لازم تحفظها هي "What kind of music do you like?" يعني "إيه نوع الموسيقى اللي بتحبها؟". دي بوّابتك للموضوع كله. لاحظ إن "kind of" معناها "نوع من"، و"do you like" بنستخدمها عشان نسأل عن الحاجات اللي الشخص بيحبّها.

2. تقول رأيك بصراحة عشان تعبّر عن ذوقك، اتعلّم التراكيب دي:

  • I love pop music = بحب البوب
  • I prefer rock = بفضل الروك
  • I don't really like jazz = مش بحب الجاز أوي

نقطة مهمّة: بعد love وprefer بنحط اسم النوع مباشرة من غير the. بنقول "I love pop music" مش "I love the pop music".

3. تضيف سبب لرأيك لما تقول رأيك، حاول تضيف ليه. مثلاً: "I love pop music. It's so catchy!" كلمة catchy معناها إن اللحن سهل ويعلّق في دماغك. ممكن كمان تقول "The beat is great" أو "The lyrics are beautiful".

4. تسأل سؤال تاني عشان المحادثة تكمّل السرّ في الكلام الناجح إنّك تسأل سؤال بعد ما تجاوب. مثلاً: "Who's your favourite singer?" أو "What about you?" عشان الطرف التاني ياخد دوره.

5. تعمل خطة مع صاحبك لو حسيت إن في كيمياء بينكم في الموسيقى، قول: "Do you want to go to a concert together?" يعني "تحب نروح حفلة مع بعض؟". جملة go to a concert معناها إنك هتروح حفلة موسيقى.

6. نصايح للمحادثة الحقيقية

  • اسمع كويس للشخص اللي قدامك قبل ما ترد
  • ابدأ بإجابة قصيرة زي "I love pop"
  • ضيف سبب بسيط: "It's so catchy!"
  • اسأل سؤال تاني عشان الكلام يكمّل

متقلقش من الغلط، المهم إنّك تتكلّم وتبادل الكلام. دلوقتي هتسجّل نفسك بتقول الجمل دي، وبعدين هتدردش مع الذكاء الاصطناعي في محادثة حقيقية.

Music is everywhere — in shops, in cafés, in cars, and on the phone. We all listen to music every day, but we like different kinds. In this lesson, you will learn the names of common music types and useful adjectives to describe them.

Here are eight important words for talking about music. Read the table carefully. Notice the part of speech (noun or adjective), the meaning in your language, and a short example in English.

Word Part of speech Example
pop noun I love pop music from the 2000s.
rock noun Their new album is great rock.
classical noun She plays classical music on the piano.
jazz noun We listened to jazz in the café.
hip-hop noun Hip-hop is very popular with young people.
loud adjective The rock concert was very loud.
quiet adjective Classical music is often quiet.
catchy adjective This song is so catchy!

Notice that in English we say "listen to music" — the preposition is "to". We also say "play music" or "like music". We do not say "listen music".

You can mix these words to give more detail: "I like loud rock music" or "I prefer quiet classical music". The adjective always comes before the noun: a loud song, a catchy tune, a quiet concert. Try to use at least three of these words today!

الموسيقى في حياتنا اليومية

الموسيقى موجودة معانا في كل حتة — في المحلات، في القهوة، في العربية، وعلى الموبايل. عشان كده محتاجين نتعلم الكلمات اللي هنستخدمها لما نتكلم عن أنواع الموسيقى المختلفة ونوصفها.

أنواع الموسيقى (Genres)

(Adjectives)

عشان توصف الموسيقى، عندك ٣ صفات مهمة:

  • Loud — يعني صوتها عالي
  • Quiet — يعني صوتها هادي
  • Catchy — يعني بتعلق في دماغك ومش بتنساها

قواعد مهمة (Important Grammar)

  1. في اللغة الإنجليزية، الصفة بتتحط قبل الاسم، يعني بنقول a loud song، a quiet concert، a catchy tune. مفيش صفة بعد الاسم زي ما أحياناً بنعمل في العربي.

  2. لما نقول "أسمع موسيقى"، بنستخدم listen to ومش بس listen. لازم كلمة to تبقى موجودة: I listen to jazz in the morning.

  3. ممكن تخلط أي نوع مع أي صفة عشان توصف بالظبط اللي بتسمع:

  4. I like loud rock music

  5. I prefer quiet classical music
  6. This pop song is so catchy

جملة الدرس النموذجية

I like quiet classical music in the morning and loud rock music in the evening.

شوف هنا إزاي استخدمنا quiet قبل classical و loud قبل rock — الصفة دايماً قبل الاسم.
