In Unit 8, we learned how to talk about friends, describe their qualities, and compare people. This review brings together the most important language from the unit so you can use it confidently in writing and speaking.

Present simple recap The present simple describes habits, routines and things that are generally true. We use it with frequency adverbs like always, usually, often, sometimes, never. With he, she, it we add -s to the verb: She works in a café. He plays football on Sundays. With I, you, we, they the verb stays in the base form: We meet every Friday. Negatives use do not (don't) / does not (doesn't): He doesn't like sport. They don't live near me.

Comparatives recap We use comparatives to compare two people or things. Short adjectives add -er: tall → taller, kind → kinder (drop the y and add -ier), big → bigger (double the final consonant). Long adjectives use more: more friendly, more interesting. A few adjectives are irregular: good → better, bad → worse. After a comparative we usually use than: Sara is taller than Tom. My best friend is more patient than me.

Friendship vocabulary recap We learned many words for friends and the qualities we value. People: friend, best friend, classmate, colleague, neighbour. Qualities: kind, funny, clever, honest, loyal, generous, shy, patient, talkative, quiet, supportive, friendly. Useful verbs: chat, share, help, trust, listen, argue, hang out with, get on with.

Writing task: a short paragraph about a friend In this task, you will write a short paragraph about a close friend. Use present simple to describe their life, comparatives to compare them to someone else, and friendship vocabulary to explain why they are important to you. Aim for about 60–80 words.

Using capital letters and full stops Start every sentence with a capital letter. End every sentence with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Use capital letters for the names of people and places: My best friend Ana lives in Bristol.

الـ Present Simple (المضارع البسيط)

ده الزمن اللي بنستخدمه لما نتكلم عن العادات والروتين والحاجات اللي بتحصل بشكل عام. لو عايز تقول إن حد بيعمل حاجة بشكل منتظم، استخدم الـ present simple. خد عندك مثلًا الجملة دي: She works in a hospital — لاحظ إنها بتاخد -s في الآخر عشان الفاعل she. لكن لو الفاعل I, you, we, أو they، الفعل بيفضل زي ما هو من غير إضافة، زي: We usually meet at the weekend.

كمان اتعلمنا الـ adverbs بتاعة التكرار، زي: always, usually, often, sometimes, never. والـ negatives بنقولها بـ don't مع الـ I, you, we, they، وبـ doesn't مع he, she, it.

الـ Comparatives (المقارنة)

لما نقارن بين شخصين أو حاجتين بنستخدم صيغة المقارنة:

  • الصفات القصيرة بنضيفلها -er زي: tall → taller، وkind → kinder (بنشيل الـ y ونضيف -ier)، وbig → bigger (بنضاعف الحرف الأخير).
  • الصفات الطويلة بنحط قبلها more زي: more friendly، more interesting.
  • وفي صفات شاذة زي: good → better، وbad → worse.
  • وبعد الـ comparative دايمًا بنحط than زي: She is funnier than my other friends.

مفردات الصداقة (Friendship vocabulary)

خدنا كمان مجموعة كلمات حلوة بتصف بيها أصحابك. من الأسماء: friend, best friend, classmate, colleague, neighbour. ومن الصفات: kind, funny, honest, loyal, patient, friendly. ومن الأفعال المفيدة: chat, share, trust, hang out with, get on with.

PREPARE — gather your ideas. Before you write, think about your best friend and answer these questions in your head or on a piece of paper: What is their name? Where do they live? What do they do every day? What are they like (kind, funny, loyal…)? What do you do together? How are they different from you (taller? funnier? more patient?)?

WRITE — your short paragraph. Write about 60–80 words about your best friend. Use the present simple to describe their life, comparatives to compare them to someone else, and friendship vocabulary to explain why they are important to you.

My best friend Sara lives in Manchester. She works in a hospital and she is very kind. We usually meet at the weekend. She is funnier than my other friends, and she is more patient than me. I really like her because she is loyal and honest.

REVIEW — check your writing. Read your paragraph again and ask: Did I start every sentence with a capital letter? Did I use full stops? Are the verbs in the correct present simple form (he / she / it + -s)? Are my comparatives correct (-er, more…, or irregular)? Did I include friendship vocabulary (kind, funny, loyal, hang out with…)?
