In Unit 6, you read short stories about real people and their experiences. The main focus was the past simple — the tense we use for finished actions at a specific time in the past. This review brings together the grammar and the reading vocabulary so you can use them with confidence.

We form the past simple in different ways. Regular verbs add -ed to the base form: walk → walked, study → studied, finish → finished. Spelling rules matter: verbs ending in -e add -d (decide → decided), verbs ending in a consonant + -y change -y to -ied (try → tried), and short verbs with a consonant–vowel–consonant pattern double the final letter (stop → stopped). Irregular verbs do not follow any rule and must be memorised. Here are some of the most useful ones from the unit:

We use didn't + base verb for negatives, and Did + subject + base verb for questions. Notice that after did and didn't we always use the base form, not the past form: She didn't went is wrong — say She didn't go. Short answers are simple: Yes, I did / No, I didn't.

Time expressions are essential with the past simple because they tell us when something happened. Common ones are yesterday, last week, last year, two days ago, in 2010, when I was young, the other day, recently. Without these markers, the listener does not know the time frame, and a past simple sentence can sound incomplete.

Unit 6 also introduced strong reading vocabulary to describe experiences. Nouns like adventure, achievement, journey, success, challenge, opportunity, courage, memory help you tell rich stories. Adjectives such as amazing, unforgettable, frightening, exciting, boring, disappointing add feeling. Strong story verbs like happen, decide, realise, discover, escape, manage move the action forward.

Now it is time to put it all together. Your writing task is to write a short personal story about a memorable day in your life. Aim for 80–120 words, use the past simple throughout, include at least three time expressions, and use two or three words from the reading vocabulary.

A useful strategy is using time markers to guide the reader. Start your story clearly, then use First of all, Then, After that, Later, In the end, Finally to show the order of events. This simple technique makes your writing much easier to follow and gives it a natural flow. Here is a simple plan you can follow:

  • Opening: When and where the day happened (e.g. Last July, I went to the beach with my cousins.)
  • Beginning: What happened first (e.g. First of all, we swam in the sea.)
  • Middle: The main event (e.g. Then, we found a small boat and rowed out to a rock.)
  • End: How the day finished (e.g. Finally, we watched the sun go down. It was an unforgettable day.)

When you finish, read your story once more and ask yourself: Is every action in the past simple? Are my time markers clear? Did I use two or three strong story words? If you can answer yes to all three, your story is ready.

الأفعال الشاذة (Irregular verbs) دي لازم تتحفظها لأنها مالهاش قاعدة. من اللي اتعلمناهم في الوحدة: go → went، have → had، see → saw، take → took، make → made، say → said، get → got، find → found.

النفي والسؤال النفي بييجي بـ didn't + الفعل الأصلي. غلط تقول 'She didn't went'، الصح 'She didn't go'. السؤال: Did + الفاعل + الفعل الأصلي. والإجابة: 'Yes, I did' أو 'No, I didn't'.

تعبرات الوقت (Time expressions) من غيرها الجملة في الماضي ممكن تسمع ناقصة. استخدم: yesterday، last week، last year، two days ago، in 2010، recently، the other day.

المهمة المطلوبة اكتب قصة شخصية قصيرة عن يوم مش في حياتك، من 80 لـ 120 كلمة. استخدم الماضي البسيط في كل جملة، على الأقل 3 تعبرات زمنية، و2-3 كلمات من المفردات الجديدة. نصيحتي: ابدأ بـ time marker زي 'Last July...' وبعدين رتب أحداثك بـ 'First of all'، 'Then'، 'After that'، 'Finally'. لما تخلص، ارجع اقرأها واتأكد إن كل الأفعال في الماضي البسيط.

PREPARE. Before you write, spend two minutes gathering ideas. Think of a day you remember well. Ask yourself: When did it happen? Where were you? Who was with you? What happened first, then, and finally? How did you feel? Choose three or four time expressions and two or three story words from the unit (adventure, challenge, memory, achievement, journey, courage) that you want to use.

WRITE. Now write your short story about a memorable day in 80–120 words. Use the past simple for every action. Start with a clear time marker (e.g. Last summer). Add First of all, Then, After that, Later, Finally to organise the events. Try to include two or three strong story words and at least three time expressions. Don't worry about mistakes — focus on getting your ideas down on paper.

REVIEW. Read your story again and check four things. (1) Is every past action in the past simple? (2) Did you use did/didn't + base verb, never did went? (3) Are your time expressions correct (last, ago, yesterday, in 2019)? (4) Did you start sentences with capital letters and put a full stop at the end? If you can answer yes to all four, your story is ready.
