Talk about plans for the environment
Grammar

Grammar

9 cards

In this lesson we are looking at one of the most useful ways to talk about the future in English: be going to. We use it when we already have a plan, a promise or a strong intention — something we have decided to do. If your friend says, I am going to recycle more paper this year, it means they have already thought about it and chosen to do it. This is different from will, which we use for sudden decisions or offers at the moment of speaking.

The structure of going to is very simple. It has three parts: the verb be (am, is or are) + going to + the base form of the main verb. The verb be must agree with the subject. Look at the table below.

Subject Positive Negative Question
I I am going to walk. I am not going to drive. Am I going to help?
He / She / It She is going to plant trees. He is not going to use plastic. Is she going to come?
You / We / They We are going to save energy. They are not going to litter. Are they going to help?

Notice the short answers. We do not repeat the main verb — only the verb be.

  • Are you going to recycle?Yes, I am. / No, I'm not.
  • Is he going to drive?Yes, he is. / No, he isn't.
  • Are they going to help?Yes, they are. / No, they aren't.

We often use going to with time expressions such as tomorrow, next week, this weekend, on Saturday and in the future. For environmental plans, useful main verbs are recycle, plant, save, use, walk, clean, protect and reduce.

Be careful with one common mistake. We always need a form of be before going to. We do not say She going to plant trees or They going to help. Always: She is going to plant trees / They are going to help.

Remember: going to is for plans and intentions — things we have already decided. If you want to talk about a sudden decision in the moment, you use will. But for plans, always use going to.

إزاي تتكلم عن خططك للمستقبل بالإنجليزي

في الدرس ده هنتعلم be going to، ودي من أهم البنى اللي بنستخدمها لما نحب نتكلم عن حاجات قررنا نعملها قبل كده. يعني لو عندك نية أو خطة أو وعد، يبقى دي البنية المناسبة.

القاعدة الأساسية

البنية بسيطة جدًا:

[am / is / are] + going to + الفعل في صورته الأصلية

الفعل be لازم دايمًا يطابق الفاعل:

  • I → I am going to walk
  • She / He / It → She is going to plant trees
  • You / We / They → We are going to save energy

مثال من الدرس نفسه: "I am going to recycle more paper this year." — واضح هنا إن الشخص فكر وقرر من قبل إنه هيعمل كده.

الفرق بين going to و will

going to بتستخدمها لما يكون عندك خطة مسبقة أو نية واضحة. will بتستخدمها للقرارات المفاجئة في لحظة الكلام.

يعني لو صاحبك قال "I'm going to recycle more paper"، يبقى ده قرار متّاخد من قبل. لكن لو قال فجأة "I'll help you"، يبقى ده قرار في اللحظة.

تعبيرات الوقت المفيدة

لما تتكلم عن خطط، بتحب تضيف تعبيرات زمنية زي:

  • tomorrow
  • next week
  • this weekend
  • next Saturday
  • in the future

أفعال مفيدة لموضوع البيئة

في موضوع البيئة هتحتاج أفعال زي:

  • recycle (يعيد تدوير)
  • plant (يغرس)
  • save (يوفّر)
  • reduce (يقلل)
  • protect (يحمي)
  • clean (ينضّف)
  • walk (يمشي بدل ما يركب)

غلطة شائعة لازم تتجنبها

لازم دايمًا يكون فيه فعل be قبل going to. مش بتقول "She going to plant trees" — لازم "She is going to plant trees."

في التمارين اللي جاية، ركّز على إن فعل be يطابق الفاعل، واختار الشكل الصح من am أو is أو are، ورتّب الجملة في صورتها السليمة.

I'm going to recycle more paper this year.

Model sentence 1. Notice the verb forms: am + going to + recycle.

We are going to plant trees in the park next Saturday.

Model sentence 2. Notice: are + going to + plant.

Listening

Listening

5 cards

You are going to hear a short conversation between two friends, Emma and Tom. They are at school, talking about what they are going to do for the environment this weekend.

Before you listen, think about this question: What can young people do to help the environment at the weekend? Make a short list in your head. Maybe you thought of cleaning a park, planting trees, riding a bike instead of driving, recycling paper, or using less plastic. Keep your ideas in mind — you will compare them with what Emma and Tom say in the conversation.

In the conversation, listen carefully for several things:

  • What Emma is going to do — her main plan for the weekend.
  • What Tom is going to do — his main plan for the weekend.
  • Whether they are going to do something together at the end of the chat.
  • Time expressions like this weekend, on Saturday morning and tomorrow.
  • Why Tom doesn't want to use a car.

Listen for the verb forms too. Emma and Tom use going to to talk about their plans. The verb be changes with the subject: I am going to, she is going to, we are going to. Listen for the short answers as well: Yes, I am and No, I'm not. Remember that in fast speech, going to often sounds like gonna — try to hear it in the dialogue.

After you listen, you will answer three questions: one about the main idea (the gist of the conversation), one about a specific detail, and one where you fill in a missing word. Don't worry if you don't catch everything the first time — you can listen to the dialogue again as many times as you need. The questions test what you can hear in the recording, not what you already know, so listen carefully and use the words you hear in the dialogue to choose your answers.

خطة الإسبوع للبيئة — محادثة بين أصحاب

في الجزء ده هتسمع محادثة بين اتنين أصحاب، إيمان وتوم. الاتنين بيتكلموا عن خططهم للويكند، والموضوع كله عن كيف نساعد البيئة بحاجات بسيطة وعملية.

زمن going to للخطط

الصيغة دي من أهم الصيغ في الإنجليزي لما نتكلم عن خطط أو نيات قررناها قبل كده. القاعدة بسيطة:

  • I am going to + verb (للمتكلم)
  • He / She / It is going to + verb (للمفرد الغايب)
  • We / You / They are going to + verb (للجمع)

فعل be بيتغير حسب الفاعل. خلينا نشوف أمثلة من الحوار نفسه:

  • I'm going to help the environment. — هساعد البيئة.
  • I'm going to clean the park near my house. — هاكنس الحديقة جنب بيتي.
  • I'm going to ride my bike to the beach. — هاركب العجلة للبحر.
  • I'm also going to plant some trees in my garden. — هازرع شجر في جنتي.

الإجابات القصيرة

في الحوار، إيمان سألت: Are you going to use a car? وتوم ردّ: No, I'm not. لاحظ الإجابات القصيرة:

  • Yes, I am. / No, I'm not.
  • Yes, she is. / No, she isn't.
  • Yes, they are. / No, they aren't.

النطق السريع

في الكلام السريع، going to بتنطق gonna. مثلاً:

  • I'm gonna plant some trees.
  • We're gonna ride our bikes.

كلمات جديدة مهمة

  • plans = خطط
  • weekend = نهاية الإسبوع
  • environment = البيئة
  • rubbish = زبالة (بريطاني)
  • pollution = تلوث
  • cause pollution = يسبب تلوث
  • leave the car at home = سيب العربية في البيت
  • plant trees = زراعة شجر
  • ride a bike = ركوب عجلة

تعبيرات وقت مهمة

  • this weekend = نهاية الإسبوع دي
  • tomorrow = بكرة
  • on Saturday morning = صباح السبت

نصيحة للإستماع

أول ما تسمع Do you have any plans for the weekend?، ركز في الإجابة عشان فيها going to اللي بيفتح موضوع الخطط. اسمع كويس لكل جملة فيها I'm going to... عشان تجمع أفكار كل واحد، وفي الآخر لاحظ لما إيمان بتدعو توم يساعدها — ده بيبقى فيه we وبيرجع للجمع.

Two friends, Emma and Tom, talk about their weekend plans for the environment. Listen carefully.

  1. E
Emma Hi Tom! Do you have any plans for the weekend?
  2. T

Required

Tom is going to drive his car to the beach.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation

6 cards

In this lesson we look at one important pronunciation feature: the natural way English speakers say going to. In slow, careful English, we say two clear words: going and to. But in everyday speaking, the two words join together and sound like one word: gonna (/ˈɡənə/).

Here's what happens physically. The first word going ends with the sound /ɪŋ/ — your tongue touches the back of your mouth to make the ng sound, and air comes out through your nose. The second word to is a very short, weak sound /ə/, called a schwa. When we speak quickly, the two words blend: the -ing becomes a simple n, and the to becomes a schwa. The result is gonna.

This is called a contraction or a weak form. It is very common in natural, everyday English, especially in speaking, songs, films and TV shows. You will hear it all the time in the listening activity. The stress is on the first syllable, go-, and the rest is short and quick. Don't say go-ING-to with equal stress — it should be smooth: GA-nuh.

Important: do not write gonna in formal writing, exams or emails. It is a spoken form only. In writing, always write going to.

Let's look at some examples. In each phrase, the target sound is the g and the n in gonna:

  • gonna recycle — /ɡənə rɪˈsaɪkl/
  • gonna plant — /ɡənə plɑːnt/
  • gonna save — /ɡənə seɪv/
  • gonna protect — /ɡənə prəˈtekt/
  • gonna walk — /ɡənə wɔːk/

When you practise, keep the rhythm: GA-na ... verb. The first part is short and strong, the verb is clear and natural. Don't over-pronounce every letter. Just say gonna and let it flow into the next word.

In the next activities, you will first listen and tell the difference between going to and gonna, then you will say three short sentences aloud. Try to copy the rhythm you hear in the model.

الصوت اللي هنشتغل عليه النهاردة: gonna

في الإنجليزي، لما حد يقول جملة زي I'm going to plant trees، في الكلام البطيء بتسمع كلمتين واضحين: going وto.

In fast English, 'going to' often sounds like one word: GONNA. The stress is on the first syllable 'go-', and the rest is short and quick. We only use 'gonna' in speaking, never in writing.

Required

Listen. Does the speaker say 'going to' or 'gonna'?

  • going to
  • gonna
Required

Read this sentence aloud. Try to say 'gonna' as one word, with stress on 'go-'.

I'm gonna recycle more paper.

Required

Read this sentence aloud. Say 'gonna' as one smooth word.

She's gonna plant trees with us.

Required

Read this sentence aloud. Keep the rhythm: GA-na save energy.

We're gonna save energy this winter.

Now it is your turn to talk about your own plans. In this section, you will hear a short model conversation, repeat some key sentences aloud, and then have a live conversation with the AI.

Here are some useful phrases to use when you talk about environmental plans. Try to remember them as whole chunks, not word by word.

English Arabic gloss
I'm going to ... أنا ذاهب إلى ... / سأقوم بـ ...
Are you going to ...? هل أنت ذاهب إلى ...؟
Yes, I am. / No, I'm not. نعم. / لا، لست ذاهبًا.
I'm going to plant trees. سأزرع أشجارًا.
I'm going to recycle more. سأُعيد تدوير المزيد.
That sounds great! يبدو رائعًا!
Maybe we can do it together. ربما يمكننا فعل ذلك معًا.
We are going to make a difference. سنُحدث فرقًا.

Tips for this speaking activity:

  1. Use going to in every sentence. Don't say I plant trees — say I am going to plant trees. This is the main grammar point of the lesson, and it is what you will be tested on.
  2. Add a time expression if you can: this weekend, tomorrow, next Saturday, in the future. This makes your plans sound more natural and complete.
  3. Use short answers when the AI asks you a question: Yes, I am / No, I'm not. Don't say Yes, I do or Yes, I will — those are wrong here because they don't use the verb be.
  4. Speak clearly but at a natural speed. Don't worry about small mistakes — keep talking. The AI will understand you even if you make a small error.
  5. Add details. When the AI asks what you are going to do, don't just say recycle. Say I'm going to recycle paper, plastic and glass at home. The more details you give, the better your conversation will be.
  6. Listen to the model first. The short dialogue in this section shows you a perfect example. Notice the verb forms, the short answers and the friendly replies. Then copy the style in your roleplay.

In the roleplay at the end, the AI (Tom) will ask you about your environmental plans for the weekend. Answer his questions, give details, and ask him some questions too. Try to keep the conversation going for at least three or four turns. Have fun, and good luck!

إزاي تتكلم عن خططك للبيئة

يا أهلاً بيكم! النهاردة هنتعلم إزاي نتكلم بالإنجليزي عن الحاجات اللي هنعملها عشان نساعد البيئة. في الدرس ده هنستخدم تركيب going to وده بنقول بيه على خططنا المستقبلية.

إيه هو going to؟

ده تركيب بسيط جداً بنستخدمه لما يكون عندنا نية أو خطة نعمل حاجة في المستقبل. بيتكوّن من:

  • am / is / are (الفعل المساعد حسب الفاعل)
  • going to
  • الفعل في المصدر

مثلاً: I am going to plant trees (أنا ناوي أزرع أشجار). شوف الأمثلة من الدرس:

  • I'm going to recycle more at home. = هعيد تدوير أكتر في البيت.
  • I'm going to leave the car at home. = هسيب العربية في البيت.
  • We are going to make a real difference. = إحنا هنعمل فرق حقيقي.

السؤال والقصير جواب

لما حد يسألك Are you going to ...?، ترد بـ:

  • Yes, I am. (لو هتعمل الحاجة فعلاً)
  • No, I'm not. (لو مش هتعملها)

مهم جداً متنقولش "Yes, I will" أو "Yes, I do" لأن ده غلط في التركيب ده. لازم تستخدم فعل الكون am/is/are.

ضيف كلمة وقت

عشان كلامك يبان طبيعي أكتر، حط كلمة بوقت زي:

  • this weekend
  • tomorrow
  • next Saturday
  • in the future

مثلاً: I'm going to plant trees this weekend.

نصايح للمحادثة

  • استمع للموديل الأول قبل ما تتكلم، ركز على الأفعال والجمل القصيرة.
  • اتكلم بوضوح وسرعة طبيعية، متقلقش من الغلط الصغير.
  • ضيف تفاصيل: بدل ما تقول "recycle" بس، قول I'm going to recycle paper, plastic and glass at home.
  • اسأل أسئلة أنت كمان عشان المحادثة تكمل وتفضل حياة.
  • استخدم جمل جاهزة كاملة زي That sounds great! و We are going to make a difference.

يلا بينا، هتسجل نفسك دلوقتي وبعدين هتعمل محادثة حقيقية مع الذكاء الاصطناعي!

Listen to this short model conversation about environmental plans. Then you will have a live chat with the AI.

  1. T
Tom Hi Emma! Are you going to help the environment this weekend?
  2. E
Emma Yes, I am. I'm going to plant some trees in the park.
  3. T
Tom That's a great idea. I'm going to recycle more at home.
  4. E
Emma Are you going to use public transport too?
  5. T
Tom Yes, I am. I'm going to leave the car at home.

To talk about plans for the environment, you need some key words. Here are eight useful words and phrases that often appear when we discuss this topic. Read the table carefully, then look at the example sentence for each one. Pay attention to the part of speech — some words are verbs and some are nouns.

Word Type Arabic gloss Example
recycle verb يُعيد التدوير We are going to recycle paper at school.
pollution noun تلوّث Air pollution is a big problem in big cities.
plant (trees) verb يزرع They are going to plant trees in the park.
litter verb / noun يرمي قمامة / قمامة Please don't litter in the street.
save energy phrase يوفر الطاقة I am going to save energy and turn off the lights.
public transport noun وسائل النقل العام She uses public transport every day.
rubbish noun قمامة Put the rubbish in the green bin, please.
protect verb يحمي We must protect wild animals.

These words go very naturally with going to. For example: I'm going to recycle more. They're going to protect the sea. She's going to use public transport. I'm going to save energy at home.

Notice that some words are usually verbs (recycle, plant, litter, protect, save) and some are nouns (pollution, rubbish, public transport). You can also form useful phrases — in English we call these collocations because the words always go together: recycle paper, plant trees, save energy, protect the environment, use public transport, pick up rubbish.

Try to learn these as fixed phrases, not as separate words. For example, English speakers say save energy, not save electricity (well, both are possible, but save energy is more common). We say public transport, not public transportation — the British English form ends in -ort with no -ation.

Litter and rubbish are both about waste, but litter is usually a verb (to drop rubbish) while rubbish is a noun (the things you throw away). You can say pick up litter and take out the rubbish. Public transport means buses, trains and the underground — anything that many people use together to travel.

In the next activities, you will match these words to their meanings, hear them spoken aloud, and use them in your own plans for the environment. By the end, you will be ready to talk about real things you are going to do to help the planet.
