When you want to help someone, English has many short phrases that work in any situation. In this section you will learn eight useful ways to give advice. Some are strong and direct, others are softer and more polite. Choosing the right phrase depends on the person and the situation.

Look carefully at the verb forms. After should / shouldn't / could / 'd we use the base verb (study, try, read). After about and tried we use the -ing form (studying, trying, reading). The verb to be changes to were in If I were you, I'd — not was.

When you want to give a strong recommendation, use should or need to. When you want to suggest an idea without telling the person what to do, use why don't you or how about. The phrase have you tried is good because it sounds helpful and friendly — it does not sound like a command.

You can also combine these phrases in one conversation. For example: "Have you tried studying with a friend? You should try it — it really works." This mixes a question and a direct piece of advice. You will hear and practise all of these phrases in the next steps.

عندي ليك النهارده درس لطيف جداً! هنتعلم مع بعض إزاي تقدّم نصيحة بالإنجليزي. بص يا سيدي، لما حد يقولّك "أنا قلقان على مستوايا في الإنجليزي وبعمل غلط كتير"، هتقوله إيه؟ في الإنجليزي عندنا أكتر من طريقة، وكل طريقة ليها طعم مختلف عن التانية.

النصيحة القوية والمباشرة لما عايز تقول للحد لازم يعمل حاجة ما، بتستخدم You should أو I think you need to. مثلاً: "You should study every day" أو "I think you need to practise more." دي بنبرة حاسمة وبتنفع لما الشخص فعلاً محتاج يسمع كلام صريح.

الاقتراح اللطيف لو عايز تقترح من غير ما تدي أوامر، بتقول Why don't you أو How about. مثلاً: "Why don't you watch English videos?" أو "How about listening to short podcasts?" لاحظ معايا كويس إن بعد How about بنحط الفعل بـ -ing.

السؤال الودود في طريقة ذكية جداً اسمها Have you tried + -ing. ده بيبقى في صورة سؤال، فمش بيحسس الحد إنك بتأمره. مثلاً: "Have you tried using an app like Quizlet?" وهنا كمان بنستخدم الـ -ing زي ما في How about.

النصيحة الشخصية من أحلى العبارات اللي هتقابلها: If I were you, I'd + verb. يعني "لو مكاني أنا، هعمل كذا". مثلاً: "If I were you, I'd speak more and write less."

الاقتراح المهذب لو عايز تكون رايق شوية في كلامك، بتقول Maybe you could. مثلاً: "Maybe you could also use an app to learn new words."

قواعد مهمة لازم تركز عليها:

  • بعد should, shouldn't, could, would, 'd بنحط الفعل في صورته الأساسية (base verb) من غير to. يعني study مش to study، وtry مش trying.
  • بعد about وtried بنحط الفعل بـ -ing. عشان كده بنقول "How about trying" و"Have you tried speaking with a friend?".
  • في جملة If I were you بنستخدم were مش was، حتى لو اللي بيتكلم شخص واحد. دي قاعدة ثابتة في الإنجليزي، بنقول "If I were you" ومش "If I was you".

والحلو في الموضوع إنك تقدر تخلط العبارات دي في نفس الكلام. تخيّل إن صديقك قالّك إن شريكه بيتكلم بسرعة ومش فاهمه. ممكن تقولّه: "Have you tried listening to slower podcasts? You should start with one-minute episodes. If I were you, I'd watch videos with subtitles too." شوف إزاي في الجملة الواحدة عندنا سؤال ونصيحة مباشرة ونصيحة شخصية، كله مع بعض!

يلّا كده، نبدأ التمرين ونسمع كلامنا ده في سياق حقيقي.

In this section you will hear a short conversation between two friends, Layla and Adam. They are in a café after class. Adam is worried because his English is not improving, even though he studies every day. Layla listens to his problem and gives him three pieces of advice.

Before you listen, think about the question: What advice would you give a friend who is studying English but not improving?

As you listen, try to catch the advice phrases. You will hear should, shouldn't, why don't you, and If I were you, I'd. You will not hear every word, and that is normal. Listen for the key advice and the main problem.

Here are some words you will hear:

  • improve (يحسّن) — to get better
  • mistake (خطأ) — something wrong that you say or write
  • shy (خجول) — feeling nervous with other people
  • podcast (بودكاست) — an audio programme you can listen to on your phone

After the dialogue, you will answer three questions: one for the gist (the main idea), one for specific information (a fact), and one for detail (an exact word from the conversation). All answers come from the dialogue you just heard — go back and listen again if you need to.

الحوار اللي هتسمعه بين اتنين أصحاب: ليلى وآدم. آدم بيحس إن مستواه في الإنجليزي واقف رغم إنه بيذاكر كل يوم، فبيشتكي لليلى وهي بتديله نصايح مفيدة. في الجزء ده، هنتعلم إزاي ندي وناخد نصيحة بالإنجليزي، وكمان نتعرف على كلمات مهمة هتظهر في الحوار.

طرق النصيحة في الإنجليزي

في الإنجليزي، عندنا أكتر من صيجة للكلام عن النصيحة، وكل واحدة ليها طعم مختلف:

  • should / shouldn't: دي أشهر طريقة وأبسطها. You should try short podcasts يعني "لازم تجرب بودكاست قصيرة". ولما نعكس، بنقول You shouldn't worry about grammar too much يعني "متقلقش على القواعد أوي". لاحظ إن النفي بيكون بكلمة واحدة بس.

  • If I were you, I'd...: صيجة مهذبة وبتدي النصيحة بشكل غير مباشر، كأنك بتحط نفسك مكان صاحبك. If I were you, I'd speak more and write less يعني "لو مكاني، كنت هتكلم أكتر وهكتب أقل". حتى لو اللي بيتكلم شخص واحد، بنستخدم were مش was، دي قاعدة الـ subjunctive في الإنجليزي.

  • why don't you...?: صيجة ودودة وطبيعية جداً. مثلاً Why don't you watch English films with subtitles? يعني "ليه ما بتشوفش أفلام إنجليزي بترجمة؟".

الكلمات الأساسية

  • improve (يُحسّن): يعني تتطور أو تتقدم. My English is improving يعني "إنجليزي بيحسن".
  • mistake (خطأ): غلطة بتعملها في الكلام أو الكتابة. I make a lot of mistakes يعني "بعمل أخطاء كتير".
  • shy (خجول): بتحس برهبة أو توتر قدام الناس. I feel shy speaking English يعني "بحس بخجل لما بتكلم إنجليزي".
  • podcast (بودكاست): برنامج صوتي بتسمعه على موبايلك في أي وقت.

استراتيجية الاستماع

في تمارين السمع، غالباً بيطلبوا منك تلات حاجات بالترتيب:

  1. gist (الفكرة العامة): ركز على المشكلة الرئيسية بتاعة آدم وإيه النصيحة الأولى.
  2. specific information (معلومة محددة): زي إيه أول نصيحة قالتها ليلى بالظبط.
  3. detail (تفصيلة دقيقة): كلمة أو جملة معينة سمعتها في الحوار.

خد بالك إنك مش لازم تمسك كل كلمة. اسمع الحوار مرة أو اتنين وركّز على النصايح. لو مش فاكر حاجة، ارجع اسمع تاني عادي، ده جزء طبيعي من التعلم.

English has a sound you write as sh and we call it /ʃ/. It appears in many of the most useful words for giving advice: should, sure, share, English, and show. If you can say this sound clearly, your advice will sound much more like a real English speaker.

To make /ʃ/, round your lips forward, almost like you are saying "shhh" to a baby or telling someone to be quiet. Put the tip of your tongue close to the roof of your mouth, just behind your top front teeth — do not touch them. Push a steady stream of air out through the small gap. The sound is voiceless, which means your voice does not vibrate. Compare it with /s/: /ʃ/ is round and short, while /s/ is long and your lips are spread.

A common mistake is to confuse /ʃ/ with /tʃ/ (as in chair). The /tʃ/ starts with a hard stop — your tongue touches the roof of your mouth. The /ʃ/ is one smooth movement of air with no stop. Listen to your teacher say ship and chip — the first word starts with /ʃ/, the second with /tʃ/.

When you give advice in English, the /ʃ/ sound often appears at the start of should or shouldn't. It also appears inside words like English and finish. Try not to add a small vowel before the /ʃ/ — some learners say "i-should" instead of "should". Keep the /ʃ/ clean and short, then move straight into the next sound. In a sentence, /ʃ/ often links to the next vowel: in You should study, the /ʃ/ slides quickly into the /ʊ/ of should.

إزاي تعمل الصوت ده بفيزيكاً؟

عشان تعمل صوت الـ /ʃ/ صح، جسمك محتاج يعمل حركات محددة مع بعض:

  • الشفايف: رُزّهم لقدام زي ما بتقول shhh لحد عايز يسكت، أو لما بتحاول تطلّع شمعة.
  • طرف اللسان: حطه قريب من سقف بوقك ورا الأسنان العلوية بس من غير ما تلمسهم خالص.
  • تيار الهوا: طلّع تيار هوا ثابت وقوي من الفُتحة الصغيرة دي.
  • الحبال الصوتية: الصوت ده voiceless، يعني الحبال الصوتية مش بتشتغل، فمش هتحس بأي اهتزاز في زورك.

الفرق بين /ʃ/ و /s/

كتير بيخلطوا بين الصوتين دول، بس الفرق بينهم واضح:

  • /ʃ/ (زي ship): شفايف متقابلة ومستديرة، والصوت قصير ومركّز.
  • /s/ (زي see): شفايف مفرودة كأنك بتبتسم، والصوت أطول.

الغلطة اللي معظم الناس بيعملوها

أكتر غلطة شائعة هي الخلط بين /ʃ/ و /tʃ/ (زي كلمة chair أو cheese). الـ /tʃ/ بيبدأ بـ stop جامد — لسانك بيلمس سقف بوقك وبعدين بيتحرك فجأة. الـ /ʃ/ حركة هوا واحدة سلسة من غير أي وقفة. اسمع الفرق بين الكلمتين دول في الموديل:

  • ship → بتبدأ بـ /ʃ/
  • chip → بتبدأ بـ /tʃ/

كلمات مهمة بالنطق ده

في سياق النصايح، الـ /ʃ/ بيظهر في كلمات زي should و shouldn't و sure و show. وتلاقي الصوت جوه كلمات تانية زي English و finish و share. لما تقول جملة زي "You should study"، الـ /ʃ/ بينزلق بسرعة في الـ /ʊ/ اللي بعدها، فخلي بالك إنك ما توقفش بينهم.

نصيحة أخيرة

بعض المتعلمين بيضيفوا صوت متحرك قبل الـ /ʃ/، فبيقولوا i-should بدل should. خلي الصوت نضيف وقصير وكمّل على طول للكلمة اللي بعدها.

In this section you will read a short blog post by a student called Sara. She shares her five best tips for learning English. The text is short, but every paragraph has one clear idea.

Reading strategy — Skimming: When you skim a text, you read the first sentence of each paragraph very quickly to find the main idea. Do not stop on difficult words. Move your eyes fast. Skimming helps you understand the general topic before you read for detail.

Pre-taught key words. Read these four words and their meanings before you open the blog post:

You will read the blog post once for the gist (the main idea of the whole text), and then you will answer three true or false questions about the details. The detail questions test if you understood the specific information in the post. Remember: every answer is in the text — you do not need any outside knowledge.

عندي ليك النهارده شرح لكلام مهم قبل ما تبدأ تقرأ، وفيه كلمات جديدة لازم تعرفها، وكمان استراتيجية ذكية للقراءة.

أولاً: الكلمات الجديدة

خلينا نتعرف على أربع كلمات أساسية هتقابلك في الموضوع ده:

  • tip معناها "نصيحة" — يعني رأي صغير بتفيد بيه حد. لما حد يقولك Here is a tip for you، يبقى بيقولك "عندك نصيحة". في النص الجاي، سارة هتديك tips (نصايح) عن تعلم الانجليزي.
  • improve يعني "تحسّن". ده فعل بنستخدمه لما حاجة بتتطور مع الوقت. مثلاً: I want to improve my English. لاحظ ان بعد improve بنحط الـ object على طول من غير حرف جر. مش بنقول improve on my English — لأ، بنقول improve my English مباشرة.
  • mistake يعني "غلطة" — أي حاجة قلتها أو كتبتها وهي مش صح. لما تتعلم لغة جديدة، هتعمل mistakes كتير، وده طبيعي جداً. متقلقش!
  • confident معناها "واثق من نفسك". لما تكون confident، انت مرتاح وحاسس انك عارف اللي بتعمله. عكسها بيكون shy أو nervous. مثلاً: When you practise more, you feel more confident.

ثانياً: استراتيجية الـ Skimming

Skimming طريقة ذكية في القراءة. معناه انك تمري عينيك بسرعة على النص عشان تاخد الفكرة العامة بس، من غير ما تركز في التفاصيل. ازاي؟ تقرأ الجملة الأولى من كل فقرة وتنط لللي بعدها. متقفش عند الكلمات الصعبة — سيبها وكمّل.

بعد ما تخلص skimming، هتكون عارف النص بيتكلم عن ايه بشكل عام. بعدها تقرأ القراءة الكاملة بهدوء عشان تجاوب على أسئلة true or false. وتفتكر دايماً: كل إجابة موجودة في النص، مش محتاج تفترض حاجة من عندك.

ثالثاً: ملحوظة على القواعد

في النص الجاي هتلاقي جمل زي You should... و Try to.... دول بيتستخدموا عشان ندي نصيحة. Should دي modal verb معناها "ينبغي" أو "لازم"، و try to معناها "حاول". لما حد يقولك You should study every day، يبقى بيقولك "ينبغي تذاكر كل يوم". ولما يقولك Try to read in English، يبقى بيقولك "حاول تقرأ بالانجليزي".

إزاي تقرا القراءة دي صح؟

المقال اللي قدامك قصير وبسيط، لبنت اسمها سارة بتديك خمس نصايح (five tips) عن تعلم الإنجليزي. قبل ما تبدأ تقرا، خليني أقولك على استراتيجية مهمة عشان تستفيد أقصى استفادة.

1. ابدأ بـ Skimming (القراءة السريعة)

أول حاجة، امسك المقال وبُص عليه بصة سريعة في أقل من ٣٠ ثانية. بص على العناوين بس (Tip 1, Tip 2, Tip 3...) وحاول تفهم الموضوع العام. سارة بتتكلم عن إيه؟ عن تعلم الإنجليزي وإنه أحياناً بيكون difficult (صعب). ده كافى كبداية.

2. بعدين Scanning (دوران على معلومة)

لو عايز تعرف معلومة معينة بسرعة، زي "كام دقيقة بتتكلم مع صديقها؟"، بُص في Tip 3 وهتلاقي الإجابة فوراً.

3. وأخيراً Read for detail (قراءة بهدوء)

دلوقتي اقرا المقال بهدوء وتفهم كل جملة وكل تفصيلة. لاحظ الكلمات الجديدة وحاول تستنتج معناها من السياق.

كلمات مهمة في النص

  • study يعني يدرس، زي ما سارة بتقول "I study English at school".
  • pronunciation يعني طريقة النطق، وده شيء مهم جداً لما بتتعلم أي لغة.
  • mistakes يعني أخطاء، وسارة شايفاها "teachers" (مدرسين) ليها.
  • confident يعني واثق في نفسك، وده نتيجة طبيعية لما بتتمرن كتير.
  • short stories يعني قصص قصيرة، ونصيحتها تبدأ بيها لأنها simple and clear.

قواعد جرامر لازم تاخد بالك منها

صيغة الأمر Imperatives

في النص هتلاقي نصايح في صيغة الأمر المباشر، زي:

  • Start with short stories
  • Don't worry about mistakes

لاحظ إن Don't + verb معناها "لا تعمل الحاجة دي".

المضارع البسيط Present Simple

سارة بتستخدمه عشان تتكلم عن عادات يومية وأسبوعية، وده مهم جداً في الإنجليزي:

  • I listen to one English podcast every day.
  • I meet my friend Adam once a week.
  • I watch short English videos on YouTube.

لاحظ الكلمات الدالة على التكرار: every day, once a week. دول بيأكدوا إن الفعل مضارع بسيط بيعبر عن روتين.

الكلمات والجمل اللي في مقال سارة دي phrass (عبارات) ممكن تستخدمها أنت كمان لما تدي نصيحة لحد عن تعلم أي حاجة. جرّب تقولها بصوت عالي!

In this section you will practise giving advice in a real conversation. First you will hear a short model dialogue, then you will read the key phrases aloud, and finally you will have a live conversation with the AI.

When you give advice in a conversation, follow three simple steps:

  1. Listen to the other person's problem.
  2. Choose a phrase that matches the situation (strong advice, polite suggestion, or a question).
  3. Respond politely when someone gives you advice. Say "That's a good idea", "I'll try that", or "Thanks for the advice".

Here are the most useful phrases for this section:

Listen to the model dialogue carefully. Notice the rhythm: each speaker talks for one or two short sentences, then waits. Do not speak too fast. In English, short clear sentences sound more natural than long ones. After the model, you will read two sentences aloud to practise your pronunciation, and then you will have your own conversation with the AI. The AI will play the role of your friend Tom, who has a problem with his English.

في الجزء ده هنتعلم إزاي نقدم نصيحة (advice) لصاحبك في محادثة حقيقية بالإنجليزي، وإزاي نرد على نصيحة حد. الموضوع بسيط: لما حد يقولك عنده مشكلة، إنت بتديله نصيحة، ولازم ترد بهدوء لما حد يديلك نصيحة إنت.

أنواع النصايح بالإنجليزي

فيه أكتر من طريقة تقدم بيها النصيحة، وكل واحدة ليها قوة مختلفة عن التانية:

نصيحة مباشرة (Strong advice):

  • You should + verb — زي: You should study a little every day. (لازم تذاكر شوية كل يوم)
  • You shouldn't + verb — زي: You shouldn't leave everything to the last minute. (ما تأجلش كل حاجة لآخر لحظة)

اقتراح مهذب (Polite suggestion):

  • Why don't you + verb? — زي: Why don't you make a study plan? (ليه ما تعملش خطة مذاكرة؟)
  • How about + -ing? — زي: How about watching grammar videos on YouTube?

نصيحة شخصية (Personal advice):

لما حد يديلك نصيحة، ما تقفش ساكت. رد بحد الجمل دي عشان المحادثة تكمّل طبيعي:

  • That's a good idea. (فكرة حلوة)
  • I'll try that. (هجرب)
  • Thanks a lot! / Thanks for the advice. (شكراً على النصيحة)

الجملة دي من Second Conditional، وبتتكون من شقين:

  • If + past simple: If I were you
  • would + verb: I'd watch

نقطة مهمة: الفعل were بييجي مع كل الضمائر في الجملة دي (I, he, she, they). ما تقولش If I was you، قول If I were you عشان هي الأدق والأكثر طبيعية.

نصيحة للمحادثة

في الإنجليزي، خلي جُملك قصيرة وواضحة. ما تستعجلش وتكلم بسرعة. كل متكلم بيقول جملة أو اتنين، وبعدين يستنى التاني يرد. ده اللي بيخلي الكلام يبان طبيعي.

دلوقتي هتقرأ الجملتين بصوت عالي، وبعدين هتعمل محادثة مع الـ AI اللي هي扮演 دور صاحبك Tom.

Using should and shouldn't for advice. Look at the model. Sara uses should for positive advice (things to do) and shouldn't for negative advice (things not to do). This is a very common pattern in English advice writing. You can also use If I were you, I'd to make the advice personal, and Why don't you to invite the reader to try your idea.

Plan your own email. Before you write, choose one friend to write to, one problem about learning English, and three pieces of advice. Use one should, one shouldn't, and one If I were you, I'd. Finish with a friendly question: "Why don't you try this?" or "Let me know how it goes!"

Common mistakes to avoid:

  • Do not write a very long email. Three short pieces of advice are enough.
  • Do not forget the comma after Hi Omar and Best wishes.
  • Do not use was in the second conditional: always If I were you.

should و shouldn't — الأساس في النصيحة:

  • should بنقولها لما نريد الشخص يعمل الحاجة. مثلاً: You should listen to one short podcast every day. يعني اسمع بودكاست قصير كل يوم.
  • shouldn't هي النفي، وبنقول بيها ما تعملش الحاجة دي. مثلاً: You shouldn't worry about every new word. يعني متقلقش من كل كلمة جديدة.

If I were you, I'd — النصيحة الشخصية:

ده تركيب جميل جداً بيخلّي النصيحة حميمية وشخصية. خلي بالك: بنستخدم were دايماً، حتى لو اللي بنتكلم عنه واحد بس (مفيش was هنا). مثلاً: If I were you, I'd write down three new words every morning. يعني لو مكانك، أنا كنت هكتب تلات كلمات جديدة كل الصبح. ده اسمه second conditional.

Why don't you — الاقتراح الودّي:

ده سؤال بنستخدمه كاقتراح لطيف. Why don't you try this for one week? يعني ما تجربش الطريقة دي أسبوع؟

أخطاء شائعة لازم تتجنبها:

  • متطولش الإيميل. تلات نصايح قصار كفاية ومفيش أكتر.
  • متنسيش الـ comma بعد التحية (Hi Omar,) وبعد الخاتمة (Best wishes, Sara).
  • متقولش أبداً "If I was you" — الصح دايماً If I were you.

قبل ما تكتب، خطّط الأول:

اختار صديق واحد بس، مشكلة واحدة عن تعلّم الإنجليزي، وتلات نصايح. خلي فيهم واحدة بـ should، وواحدة بـ shouldn't، وواحدة بـ "If I were you, I'd". واختم بسؤال ودّي يدعو القارئ يرد عليك.

Strategy: Using should and shouldn't for advice. In an advice email, use should for things the reader should do (positive advice) and shouldn't for things the reader should not do (negative advice). This makes your advice clear and easy to follow. You can also use If I were you, I'd for personal advice.
