Talk about dreams

Grammar

10 cards

In English, when one verb follows another, the second verb usually takes either the -ing form (for example, reading, travelling) or the to-infinitive (for example, to read, to travel). The verb that comes FIRST decides which form the second verb must take. This is one of the most common grammar points at B1, and it is essential when you talk about dreams, plans and ambitions.

Look at the two patterns in the table below. Some verbs are always followed by the -ing form, and some verbs are always followed by the to-infinitive. There is no simple rule for the meaning — you simply have to learn the most common verbs in each group.

Verb + -ing Verb + to infinitive
enjoy, imagine, avoid, consider, suggest, keep, finish, mind, practise want, need, decide, hope, plan, promise, agree, expect, learn, offer

A small group of important verbs can take BOTH forms, but the meaning is different:

Verb Verb + -ing Verb + to infinitive
stop He stopped smoking. (= he quit) He stopped to smoke. (= he paused in order to smoke)
remember I remember meeting her. (= a memory) Remember to meet her. (= don't forget)
try Try pressing the button. (= experiment) I tried to open the door. (= attempt)
regret I regret telling him. (= wish I hadn't) I regret to tell you… (= sorry to give bad news)

In the negative, put not before the second verb: She decided not to go. / He avoids not eating sugar (we usually say He avoids eating sugar instead, with a positive verb). In questions, keep the pattern: Do you enjoy cooking? / What do you want to do later?

A useful tip: when you talk about dreams, you will often use verbs from the second column (I want / hope / plan / need to…) followed by a clear goal. We will practise this pattern in the exercises below.

قاعدة الـ verb patterns: الـ -ing والـ to-infinitive

في الإنجليزي، لما يكون عندنا فعلين ورا بعض في الجملة، الفعل التاني بيبقى شكله مختلف حسب الفعل الأول. بعض الأفعال لازم ييجي بعدها -ing زي reading أو travelling، وبعضها لازم ييجي بعدها to + infinitive زي to read أو to travel. يعني الفعل الأول هو اللي بيقرر شكل الفعل التاني، ومفيش قاعدة واحدة للمعنى، لازم تحفظ أشهر الأفعال في كل مجموعة.

النمط الأول: Verb + -ing

في أفعال كتير لازم ييجي بعدها الـ ing form على طول من غير to. من أشهرها: enjoy و imagine و avoid و consider و suggest و keep و finish و mind و practise. مثال على كده: I enjoy reading before bed. هنا enjoy جت قبل reading اللي هي الـ ing form مباشرة.

النمط التاني: Verb + to infinitive

في أفعال تانية لازم ييجي بعدها to والفعل في صورته الأساسية. من أهمها: want و need و decide و hope و plan و promise و agree و expect و learn و offer. مثال: She wants to travel the world one day. هنا want جت قبل to travel.

أفعال بتقبل الاتنين بس بمعنى مختلف

في شوية أفعال مهمة بتقبل النمطين، لكن المعنى بيتغير:

  • stop: He stopped smoking يعني "بطّل يدخن"، لكن He stopped to smoke يعني "وقف عشان يدخن".
  • remember: I remember meeting her يعني "فاكر إني قابلتها"، لكن Remember to meet her يعني "افتكر تقابلها".
  • try: Try pressing the button يعني "جرّب اضغط" كتجربة، لكن I tried to open the door يعني "حاولت أفتح".
  • regret: I regret telling him يعني "ندمت إني قولتله"، لكن I regret to tell you معناها "للأسف لازم أقولك".

النفي والسؤال

في النفي بنحط not قبل الفعل التاني: She decided not to go. وفي الأسئلة بنحافظ على نفس النمط: Do you enjoy cooking؟ أو What do you want to do later؟

نصيحة عملية

لما تتكلم عن أحلامك وخططك، هتحتاج النمط التاني كتير، يعني: I want to... I hope to... I plan to... ركّز في التمارين على الفعل الأول عشان تقدر تختار الشكل الصح للفعل التاني اللي بعده.

Listening

Listening

5 cards

You are going to hear a short conversation between two friends, Sara and Tom, who are discussing their future dreams and plans. Listen the first time for the gist (the general idea), and the second time for specific information (names, places, actions). Before you listen, predict: what kind of jobs do you think a 19-year-old student and a young chef might dream about?

The dialogue uses the grammar and vocabulary from earlier in this lesson, so the language should already feel familiar: verbs like want, hope, plan and nouns like dream, goal.

المحادثة دي بين Sara و Tom، اتنين أصحاب بيتكلموا عن أحلامهم للمستقبل. هنشوف مع بعض الكلمات والقواعد اللي استخدموها، ونفهم إزاي نتكلم عن أحلامنا بالإنجليزي.

كلمات مهمة من المحادثة

  • dream معناها حلم، وبيتقال في جملة زي "I dream of becoming a doctor" يعني بحلم إني أبقى دكتور.
  • goal معناها هدف، زي ما Sara بتقول "That's a wonderful goal" يعني ده هدف جميل.
  • chef يعني شيف أو طباخ محترف.
  • restaurant يعني مطعم.
  • pandemic يعني وباء أو جائحة، زي كوفيد اللي مرينا بيه.
  • future يعني المستقبل.
  • to serve يعني يقدّم أو يخدم، زي "I'd love to serve modern Middle Eastern dishes" يعني بحب أقدّم أكلات شرق أوسطية حديثة.

قواعد جرامر مهمة

أولاً: want to + فعل عشان تعبّر عن رغبتك. زي ما Tom بيقول "I really want to open my own restaurant" يعني عايز جداً أفتح مطعم خاص بيا. وكمان Sara بتقول "I want to help people" يعني عايز أساعد الناس.

ثانياً: I'd love to + فعل وهي طريقة أرقّ وألطف للتعبير عن الرغبة. الـ I would love to بتدّي إحساس إنك متحمس جداً. Tom بيستخدمها لما بيقول "I'd love to serve modern Middle Eastern dishes" يعني بحب جداً إني أقدّم أكلات شرق أوسطية حديثة.

ثالثاً: dream of + فعل بصيغة -ing. Sara بتقول "I dream of becoming a doctor" يعني بحلم إني أبقى دكتور. لاحظ إنها مش بتقول "to become" لكن بتقول "becoming".

رابعاً: Have you always + past participle للسؤال عن حاجة من زمان لحد دلوقتي. Sara بتسأل "Have you always wanted to be a chef?" يعني هل من زمان عايز تبقى شيف؟

خامساً: started + verb-ing للكلام عن حاجة بدأت في الماضي. Tom بيقول "I started enjoying cooking during the pandemic" يعني بدأت أستمتع بالطبخ وقت الوباء. هنا started ماضي بسيط وبعدها فعل بـ -ing.

نصايح للاستماع

أول مرة اسمع للمعنى العام (gist) - مين عايز إيه. تاني مرة ركّز على التفاصيل: امتى Tom بدأ الطبخ، إيه نوع الأكل اللي عايز يقدّمه، وSara عايزة تبقى إيه. لو سمعتها مرتين هتلاقي الكلمات دي بقت مألوفة جداً!

Sara and Tom are old friends having coffee and talking about their future plans.

  1. S
Sara Hi Tom! I heard you've been thinking about your future a lot lately.
  2. T
Tom Yeah, I have. I really want to open my own restaurant one day.
  3. S
Sara That sounds exciting! Have you always wanted to be a chef?
  4. T
Tom Not always. I started enjoying cooking during the pandemic, when I had more time at home.
  5. S
Sara I love cooking too! What kind of food would you like to serve?
  6. T
Tom I'd love to serve modern Middle Eastern dishes. What about you, Sara? What do you want to do?
  7. S
Sara I dream of becoming a doctor. I want to help people and travel to different countries.
  8. T
Tom That's a wonderful goal. Do you have a plan to make it happen?
  9. S
Sara Yes, I need to study hard at university and pass my exams. I also hope to volunteer at a hospital this summer.
Required

What is the conversation mainly about?

  • A holiday they took last year
  • Their future dreams and plans
  • A restaurant they visited together
  • Their university exams next week
Required

What kind of food does Tom want to serve?

  • Italian pizza
  • Modern Middle Eastern dishes
  • Japanese sushi
  • French pastries
Required

Sara says she needs to study hard at university and ___ at a hospital this summer.

Pronunciation

Many B1 learners mix up the short vowel /ɪ/ (as in wish) and the long vowel /iː/ (as in dream). They look similar in spelling but feel very different in the mouth.

To make the short /ɪ/: relax your lips, open your mouth only a little, and keep the tongue low and forward. The sound is short and quick — about half a second. Try saying ship, fit, build, imagine, wish.

To make the long /iː/: stretch your lips into a small smile, raise the front of your tongue close to the roof of your mouth, and hold the sound for longer — about one second. Try saying sheep, feet, dream, achieve, succeed, believe.

Look at the table of useful dream-and-success words and notice which syllable has /ɪ/ and which has /iː/:

Short /ɪ/ Long /iː/
wish /wɪʃ/ dream /driːm/
build /bɪld/ feel /fiːl/
imagine /ɪˈmædʒɪn/ achieve /əˈtʃiːv/
succeed (second part) /səkˈsiːd/ succeed /səkˈsiːd/
live /lɪv/ believe /bɪˈliːv/

A useful minimal pair to practise: ship /ʃɪp/ vs sheep /ʃiːp/. The only difference is the length of the vowel. Pull your lips wider and hold the sound for sheep; relax and shorten the sound for ship.

When you record yourself in the app, exaggerate the difference at first. It is easier to make a clear /iː/ longer than you think, and a clear /ɪ/ shorter than you think.

قصير /ɪ/ طويل /iː/
wish dream
build feel
imagine achieve
live believe
succeed

لاحظ إن كلمة زي succeed فيها الصوت الطويل في المقطع التاني: /sək-siːd/.

تمرين حلو: الـ Minimal Pair

Short /ɪ/: relaxed lips, mouth slightly open, tongue low and forward — quick sound. Long /iː/: lips in a small smile, tongue high and forward, hold the sound for about one second.

Required

Listen carefully. Which word do you hear?

  • ship
  • sheep
Required

Say the word with a short /ɪ/. Pull your lips back only a little.

wish

Required

Now say this word with a long /iː/. Stretch your lips into a smile and hold the sound.

dream

Required

Say the full sentence slowly. Make /iː/ long in believe and achieve and dream.

I believe I can achieve my dream.

Reading

Reading

6 cards

In this section you will read a short personal blog post written by a university student. The writer explains her dream, her goals and the steps she needs to take. Before you read, here is a useful reading strategy and four key words you will meet.

STRATEGY BOX — Skimming for gist: When you skim a text, you read the first and last lines of each paragraph very quickly, and you do NOT stop on difficult words. Your only goal is to get the general idea: Who is writing? What are they writing about? How do they feel? You will check the details in a second, slower read.

Pre-taught key words:

  • achieve — to get or reach something you worked for (يحقق)
  • support — to help somebody (يدعم)
  • volunteer — to work without being paid (يتطوع)
  • achieve — to succeed in finishing something (يحقق)

Now skim the article in step 1 to find the writer's main dream.

(Who is writing?)
  2. بيكتب عن إيه؟ (What is it about?)
  3. الكاتب حاسس بإيه؟ (How do they feel?)

لو عرفت إجابة الأسئلة دي، يبقى أنت فهمت النص كفاية للمهمة الأولى.

الكلمات الجديدة اللي هتقابلها في النص:

  • achieve — يعني تحقق أو تنجز حاجة اشتغلت عليها فترة طويلة. مثلاً: She wants to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor.
  • support — يعني يدعم ويساعد. مثلاً: My family always supports me when I feel tired.
  • volunteer — يعني يشتغل بدون مقابل، تطوع. مثلاً: He volunteers at the animal shelter every weekend.

My big dream

Hi, my name is Aisha. I'm nineteen years old and I study biology at university. My big dream is to become a doctor and work in a small village in Africa. I want to help people who don't have easy access to good hospitals. I really enjoy studying science, and I find biology very interesting. After I finish university, I plan to volunteer for a medical charity for one year. My parents hope I will succeed, and they support me in every way they can. I know it will be difficult, but I believe I can achieve my dream. I often imagine myself wearing a white coat and helping children one day. That thought keeps me working hard every single day.

  • access - وصول أو إمكانية، وعبارة easy access to good hospitals معناها إنك تقدر توصل لمستشفيات كويسة بسهولة
  • volunteer - تتطوع أو تشتغل ببلاش، بنقول volunteer for a charity تتطوع في جمعية خيرية
  • succeed - تنجح، زي I hope I will succeed أنا بتمنى أنجح
  • achieve - تحقق أو توصل لهدفك، achieve my dream أحقق حلمي
  • support - يدعم أو يساند، they support me هم بيدعموني

القواعد المهمة

أولاً، التعبير عن الأحلام والخطط للمستقبل عندنا أكتر من طريقة في الإنجليزي:

  • dream is to + infinitive: دي جملة اسمية للتعبير عن حلم. My dream is to become a doctor - حلمي إني أبقى دكتور. لاحظ إن الفعل بعد to بيجي في المصدر.
  • plan to + verb: بنستخدمها لما يكون عندك خطة حقيقية. I plan to volunteer for one year - أنا مخططة إني أتطوع لمدة سنة.
  • after + present simple: لما بنتكلم عن حاجة هتحصل في المستقبل بعد حاجة تانية، بنستخدم المضارع البسيط بعد after. After I finish university - بعد ما أخلص الجامعة. مش After I will finish، دي غلطة شائعة.
  • believe + can: للتعبير عن الثقة في النفس. I believe I can achieve my dream - أنا مؤمنة إني أقدر أحقق حلمي.

تاني حاجة، كلمات ربط وعبارات مفيدة:

  • in every way they can - بكل الطرق اللي يقدروا عليها

Now it is your turn to speak. You will hear a short model conversation, repeat the key sentences, and then have a real conversation with the AI about YOUR dream. Use the phrases in the table to help you. Try to use at least one verb + -ing and one verb + to-infinitive in your answer.

Phrase Meaning (Arabic)
My dream is to… حلمي أن…
I'd like to… أود أن…
I hope to… آمل أن…
I plan to… أخطط لـ…
I want to… أريد أن…
I've always wanted to… لطالما أردت أن…
My main goal is to… هدفي الرئيسي هو…

When you record yourself, do not worry about being perfect. Speak slowly, use the phrases above, and try to answer in full sentences. The AI will then ask you follow-up questions in the roleplay at the end.

  • My dream is to become a software engineer — حلمي إني أبقى مهندس سوفتوير.
  • I hope to get a placement — أنا آمل إني أحصل على تدريب صيفي.
  • I plan to finish my degree — أنا مخطط إني أخلص دراستي.
  • I'd like to work abroad — أنا ودّي إني أشتغل برة.
  • I've always wanted to travel — أنا دايمًا كنت عايز أسافر.
  • My main goal is to succeed — هدفي الأساسي إني أنجح.

شايف؟ كلهم نفس الفكرة: فعل + to + الفعل في الـ base form. في الجملة الأولى، become ده الفعل في الـ infinitive بعد to.

الفعل مع -ing

في الـ hint اللي في الدرس بيقولوا حاول تستخدم verb + -ing كمان. الـ -ing دي بنستخدمها لما الفعل ييجي في دور الـ subject أو الـ object في الجملة:

  • I enjoy learning new things — أنا بستمتع إني أتعلم حاجات جديدة.
  • I'm thinking of moving abroad — أنا بافكر إني أسافر برة.
  • I'm looking forward to getting a job — أنا متحمس إني ألاقي شغل.

نصايح للـ speaking

لما تسجل صوتك، متقلقش لو غلطت. اتكلم بهدوء، استخدم الـ phrases اللي فوق، وحاول تكوّن جمل كاملة. الـ AI هيسألك follow-up questions بعد كده، فحضّر كذا إجابة عن حلمك وخطتك.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

When you talk about dreams, you need more than verbs. You also need the right nouns (the things you want) and the right verbs (the actions that take you there). Below are eight useful words and phrases connected to dreams, goals and success. Read the table, say each word aloud, and notice the part of speech and the small example sentence.

Word Part of speech Meaning (Arabic) Example
dream noun / verb حلم My dream is to live near the sea.
ambition noun طموح Her ambition is to become a surgeon.
goal noun هدف Setting a clear goal helps you focus.
wish noun / verb أمنية / يتمنى I wish I could speak five languages.
hope noun / verb أمل / يأمل We hope to visit Japan next spring.
achieve verb يحقق He finally achieved his dream of winning a medal.
succeed verb ينجح If you work hard, you will succeed.
inspire verb يلهم Her story inspires me to keep going.

Some small collocations are very useful at B1:

  • have a dream / follow a dreamShe has a dream of opening a school.
  • set a goal / reach a goalThey set a goal to save £2,000 this year.
  • achieve success / achieve a dreamHe achieved success after ten years of work.
  • inspire somebody to do somethingMy teacher inspired me to study chemistry.

Be careful with wish and hope. We say I wish I could fly (we use the past after wish for an impossible or unlikely thing), and I hope to see you soon (we use to + infinitive after hope). We will see these patterns again in the grammar and speaking sections.

الكلام عن الأحلام والطموحات

لاحظ إزاي في الجملة الواحدة اتجمعوا: ambition (اسم)، succeed (فعل)، hopes to inspire (فعل مع to + infinitive).

نصيحة أخيرة
