Booking tickets for a show in English usually happens in three short stages: opening the call, giving the details, and paying and confirming. Using polite, standard phrases helps the conversation run smoothly and shows respect for the box-office assistant.

When you start the call, greet the assistant and state your purpose clearly. A phrase such as I'd like to book two tickets, please is direct, polite and natural. Avoid the more formal I want to book in a theatre context — I'd like is friendlier.

In the middle of the call, you will give information and ask questions. You need to ask about the date, the time, the price, and the type of seat. Useful structures include Do you have anything on …?, How much are they? and Could I have seats in the stalls, please? The word stalls refers to the ground-floor seats of a theatre; the upper circle or balcony is higher up and usually cheaper.

Finally, you need to pay and confirm. The assistant will usually ask How would you like to pay? or Would you like to pay by card?. You can answer with Yes, please or specify Could I pay by credit card?. A confirmation email or a booking reference will often be offered — you can accept with Yes, please send it to my email or Could I have a confirmation email, please?.

Below is a table of the most useful phrases for this situation, with a short Arabic gloss for each one to help you remember them.

English phrase كيف تُستخدم المعنى بالعربية
Hello, I'd like to book two tickets, please. لفتح المكالمة أرغب في حجز تذكرتين، من فضلك.
Do you have anything on Saturday evening? للسؤال عن الموعد هل لديكم عرض مساء السبت؟
How much are the tickets? للسؤال عن السعر كم سعر التذاكر؟
Could I have seats in the stalls, please? لطلب مقاعد محددة هل يمكنني الحصول على مقاعد في الطابق الأرضي؟
Is there a booking fee? للسؤال عن الرسوم الإضافية هل هناك رسوم حجز؟
I'll pay by credit card. لتحديد طريقة الدفع سأدفع ببطاقة ائتمان.
Could I have a confirmation email, please? لتأكيد الحجز هل يمكنني الحصول على بريد إلكتروني للتأكيد؟
Thank you for your help.

Good afternoon, Royal Theatre box office. How can I help? يعني "مساء الخير، شباك تذاكر مسرح رويال. أقدر أساعدك إزاي؟" ردّك المثالي هو: Hello, I'd like to book two tickets for The Magic Flute, please. لاحظ هنا إننا بنستخدم I'd like بدل I want. في المواقف الرسمية والخدمات، I'd like أرقى وألطف بكتير من I want، خصوصًا في سياق المسرح. وكمان لاحظ ترتيب الجملة: الفاعل، الفعل المساعد، الفعل الأصلي، وبعدين please في الآخر — ده الترتيب المهذب القياسي.

ثانيًا: السؤال عن الموعد والسعر

بعدها الموظف هيسألك: Which date would you like? "أنت عايز أنهي تاريخ؟" ممكن تردّ بالسؤال: Do you have anything on Saturday evening? يعني "عندكم أي حاجة السبت بليل؟" الجملة دي مرنة جدًا، تقدر تستبدل Saturday evening بأي يوم وأي وقت زي Friday afternoon أو Sunday morning. ولما يجاوبك على الموعد، تقدر تسأل عن السعر بجملة بسيطة: How much are the tickets? ولو عايز تتأكد من رسوم الحجز: Is there a booking fee?

ثالثًا: أنواع المقاعد — وده مهم جدًا

هنا بيجي جزء أساسي من مفردات المسرح البريطاني:

  • stalls = الطابق الأرضي، وعادةً أغلى لأنه قريب من المسرح.
  • upper circle أو balcony = الأدوار العليا، وعادةً أرخص.
  • dress circle = دور وسط، سعره متوسط.

لما تطلب مقاعد معينة، استخدم Could I have ... please? — مثلًا: Could I have two seats in the stalls, please? الصيغة Could I have بتدل على رغبة مهذبة مش طلب جامد، ودي الطريقة المفضّلة في المواقف الرسمية.

رابعًا: الدفع وتأكيد الحجز

آخر خطوة إنك تحدد طريقة الدفع وتطلب تأكيد. ممكن تقول: I'll pay by credit card لو الموظف سألك. لما يسألك Would you like to pay by card?، ردّك البسيط هو Yes, please. ودي بتاعك لما تطلب الإيميل: Could I have a confirmation email, please?

You will hear a customer phoning a theatre to book tickets. Notice the polite structures used on both sides.

Listening

Listening

5 cards

In this listening task, you will hear a realistic phone conversation between a customer and a box-office assistant at a London theatre. The customer wants to book two tickets for a performance of The Magic Flute on a specific date.

Before you listen, take a moment to predict what you might hear. When people book tickets by phone, they typically:

  • greet the assistant and state the show they want
  • ask about available dates and times
  • ask about ticket prices and seat types
  • give payment details and confirm the booking

In a B2-level conversation, you should also expect to hear polite softeners such as could, would and please, and you may hear a small booking fee mentioned in addition to the ticket price.

Listen for these key pieces of information: the name of the show, the date, the time, the price of the tickets, the location of the seats (for example, the stalls or upper circle) and the booking fee. You do not need to understand every single word — focus on the numbers, names and key nouns.

Two useful listening strategies at B2 level are: (1) listen for numbers (dates, times, prices) because they are easy to miss but are often the answer to comprehension questions; (2) listen for signpost words such as first of all, then, finally which tell you what stage of the booking the speakers are in. You will use both strategies in the tasks that follow.

مثلاً لما تسمع "Saturday the fourteenth of June" ده معناه السبت 14 يونيو، ولما تسمع "seven thirty in the evening" يعني الساعة 7:30 بالليل.

عبارات مهمة من المحادثة

  • "I'd like to book some tickets, please" - دي طريقة مهذبة جداً لطلب حجز تذاكر. في اللغة الإنجليزية، "I'd like to" أرقى بكتير من "I want to".
  • "Good afternoon, Royal Theatre box office. How can I help?" - الجملة الرسمية اللي بيقولها أي موظف لما يرد على التليفون.
  • "Do you have anything for...?" - سؤال مهذب عن المواعيد المتاحة.
  • "How much are they?" - للسؤال عن السعر.
  • "Could I have two seats in the stalls, please?" - هنا "Could I" بتُستخدم للطلب بأسلوب مهذب جداً.

قواعد لغوية مهمة

1. Polite softeners (المهدئات في الكلام): في الإنجليزية لما تطلب حاجة، بتستخدم كلمات زي could و would و please و I'd like to عشان الكلام يبقى مهذب. مثلاً بدل ما تقول "I want tickets" بتقول "I'd like to book some tickets, please".

2. التواريخ في الإنجليزية البريطانية: بنقول "the fourteenth of June" مش "June 14th" زي الأمريكيين. بنستخدم ordinal numbers (الأعداد الترتيبية): first, second, third, fourth, fourteenth.

3. أسماء الأوبرات والمسرحيات: بنحط the قبل اسم أي عمل مشهور. عشان كده بنقول "The Magic Flute" مش "Magic Flute".

4. العملة: الجنيه الإسترليني (£). لما تسمع "forty-five pounds each" يعني 45 جنيه للتذكرة الواحدة.

أنواع المقاعد في المسرح البريطاني

  • Stalls: المقاعد الأمامية القريبة من المسرح، وعادةً بتكون أغلى.
  • Upper circle: المقاعد في الطابق العلوي، أرخص شوية.

نصائح للاستماع

أول مرة اسمع المحادثة، حاول تفهم الفكرة العامة. تاني مرة ركّز على الأرقام (التاريخ، الوقت، السعر) عشان دي اللي بتيجي في الأسئلة عادةً. ولاحظ كلمات الترتيب زي first, then, finally عشان بتساعدك تعرف أنت في أنهي خطوة من خطوات الحجز.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation

When you book tickets for a show, you will hear and say many words that contain the sh and ch sounds. In English (UK), the letters sh usually represent the phoneme /ʃ/, and the letters ch usually represent /tʃ/. These two sounds are similar but not identical, and confusing them can change the meaning of a word.

The /ʃ/ sound (as in show, sure and special) is a long, soft fricative. To produce it, round your lips into a small 'o' shape and bring the tip of your tongue close to the back of your upper teeth, but do not let them touch. Push a steady stream of air through the narrow gap. Your vocal cords do not vibrate — the sound is voiceless. The airflow continues for almost a whole second, giving the sound its characteristic long, gentle hiss.

The /tʃ/ sound (as in chair, cheap and cheese) is a short affricate — in other words, a stop followed immediately by a fricative. To make it, briefly press the tip of your tongue firmly against the palate to block the air (the /t/ part), then release it quickly into the /ʃ/ position above. The sound is much shorter than /ʃ/ and finishes with a sharper release. Your lips are slightly more spread than for /ʃ/.

The two sounds appear in many common minimal pairs, where a single sound change alters the word's meaning:

/ʃ/ (sh) /tʃ/ (ch)
ship chip
share chair
shoe chew
wash watch
saving caving

In the context of theatre and ticket booking, you will frequently meet words with /ʃ/ — show, push, special, sure, she, English — and words with /tʃ/ — cheaper, chair, watch, check, March, Saturday (no /tʃ/, but a useful contrast). When you ask about the show, you do not want the box-office assistant to think you mean a different show with a similar name. Get the position of your tongue right, keep the airflow long and even for /ʃ/, and you will be clearly understood.

كمان جرب "sure" و "special" و "English" و "she".

(Minimal Pairs)

  • ship (سفينة) ≠ chip (شيبس/قطعة)
  • share (يشارك/نصيب) ≠ chair (كرسي)
  • wash (يغسل) ≠ watch (ساعة/بيتفرج)
  • saving (بيوفّر) ≠ caving (بينزل في كهف)

كلمات هتقابلها لما تحجز تذاكر

  • بكلمات فيها sh: show، push، special، sure، English
  • بكلمات فيها ch: cheaper، chair، watch، check

نصيحة أخيرة: خلي بالك إن الـ /ʃ/ طويل ومستمر زي الهس، والـ /tʃ/ قصير وفيه ضربة لسان قوية. لما تطلب تذكرة لـ show، متقولش أي كلمة تانية عشان الموظف يفهمك صح ومايغلطش عليك.

To make /ʃ/, round your lips and hold your tongue close to the roof of your mouth without touching it. Push air out steadily — the sound is long and soft. To make /tʃ/, briefly press your tongue against the palate, then release it into the /ʃ/ shape. The /tʃ/ sound is short and finishes with a sharper release.

Required

Which word do you hear?

  • share
  • chair
Required

Say the word slowly. Hold the /ʃ/ at the end for almost a second.

show

Required

Say the word. Notice the short, sharp /tʃ/ at the start, then the long /ə/ vowel.

cheaper

Required

Practise the full phrase. Keep the /ʃ/ in 'seats' long and soft.

I'd like two seats, please.

Reading

Reading

5 cards

In this section you will read a short blog post about a personal theatre experience. The strategy we will practise is skimming for gist.

Skimming means reading a text quickly to get the general idea, without stopping for every unknown word. When you skim, you:

  • read the title and any sub-headings first
  • read the first sentence of each paragraph
  • read the last sentence of each paragraph
  • ignore unknown words if they do not affect the main message

Skimming is the right strategy when you only need the main idea of a text — for example, when you are deciding whether a blog post is worth reading in full, or when a comprehension question asks 'What is the text mainly about?'.

Here are three key words from the article. They are pre-taught so you can read with confidence:

  • production (noun) — a show or play performed in a theatre. The new production of Hamlet opens next week.
  • incredible (adjective) — extremely good or surprising. The view from the top of the hill was incredible.
  • afterwards (adverb) — after that time or event. We had dinner and afterwards went for a walk.

Now read the article. Try to skim it first to find the main idea, then read it again more carefully to answer the detail questions.

My First Night at the Old Vic

Last month, my sister took me to see a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Old Vic Theatre in London. I had never been to a West End show before, so I was quite nervous as we walked in.

The moment I saw the beautiful red curtains and the golden lights, I felt completely relaxed. The performance was incredible. The lead actress played Juliet with such feeling that I actually cried during the balcony scene. Afterwards, we went for a late dinner near the river and talked about the play for hours.

That night reminded me how powerful live theatre can be. I'm already planning to book tickets for a musical next spring.

مثال: "The new production of Hamlet opens next week" يعني العرض الجديد لهاملت هيفتتح الأسبوع الجاي.
  • incredible (صفة): معناها مذهل أو لا يُصدق. "The performance was incredible" يعني الأداء كان مذهل.
  • afterwards (ظرف): معناها بعد كده أو فيما بعد. "We had dinner and afterwards went for a walk" يعني اتعشينا وبعد كده رُحنا نمشي.

عن النص نفسه:

النص اسمه My First Night at the Old Vic وده blog post قصير عن واحد راح المسرح لأول مرة في حياته. أخدته أخته يشوفوا production لـ Romeo and Juliet في مسرح Old Vic في لندن.

Required

What is the main topic of the blog post?

  • A disappointing visit to a restaurant
  • A memorable first experience of a West End show
  • Instructions for booking tickets online
Required

Required

The lead actress played the character of Juliet.

Required

What did the writer do after the show?

  • They went home and went to bed.
  • They had a late dinner near the river.
  • They booked tickets for another show that same night.
Speaking

Speaking

6 cards

Now it is your turn to book tickets by phone. In this section, you will hear a model conversation, repeat the key sentences, and then have a live conversation with the box-office assistant.

A successful phone booking in English has three clear stages:

  1. Opening — greet the assistant and say what you want. Hello, I'd like to book two tickets for…, please.
  2. Giving details and asking questions — ask about date, time and price; choose your seats. Do you have anything on Friday evening? / How much are the tickets? / Could I have seats in the stalls, please?
  3. Paying and closing — confirm payment and finish politely. Yes, please. / Thank you for your help.

Useful phrases to keep in mind:

  • I'd like to book… (very common opener, more polite than I want)
  • Do you have anything on…? (asking about available dates)
  • Could I have…? (asking for a specific type of seat)
  • How much are they? (asking about price)
  • Is there a booking fee? (asking about extra charges)
  • I'll pay by credit card. (specifying how to pay)
  • Thank you for your help. (polite close)

Pronunciation reminders: remember the /ʃ/ vs /tʃ/ contrast from the pronunciation section. In this conversation, the words seats and cheaper will appear, and you will also need a clear /ʃ/ in show and push. Keep your tone warm and slightly slow — phone calls can be hard to hear, so clarity is more important than speed.

When you listen to the model dialogue, pay attention to how the customer gives information in a logical order: show → date → number of tickets → seat type → payment.

إزاي تحجز تذاكر لمسرحية بالتليفون بالإنجليزي؟

تخيّل إنك عايز تاخد تذاكر لمسرحية كوميدية اسمها "Laugh Out Loud"، وموظف المسرح واقف على الخط. المكالمة دي ليها شكل ثابت من 3 مراحل، ولما تفهمهم هتلاقي الموضوع سهل أوي.

أول حاجة: الافتتاحية (Opening)

أول ما حد يرد، سلّم وقول اللي عايزه. الجملة المفتاحية هنا: Hello, I'd like to book two tickets for the Friday performance, please. لاحظ إن I'd like to أرق وأحسن من I want، خصوصًا في المواقف الرسمية. التلفون محتاج أسلوب مهذب، فالكلمة دي بتفرق.

تاني حاجة: التفاصيل والأسئلة (Details and questions)

هتكمّل وإنت بتبادل معلومات: الموظف يقولك التاريخ والسعر، وإنت تختار نوع المقعد. أهم العبارات هنا:

  • Do you have anything on Friday evening? — يعني "عندكم حاجة يوم الجمعة بليل؟"
  • How much are they? — "بكام التذكرة؟"
  • Could I have seats in the stalls, please? — "ممكن مقاعد في الصالة الرئيسية، لو سمحت؟"

تالت حاجة: الدفع والختام (Paying and closing)

بعد ما الموظف يقولك السعر، هتسأله عن طريقة الدفع، وتقول مثلًا Yes, please, I'll pay by credit card، وتقفل المكالمة بعبارة زي Thank you for your help.

Sorry, could you repeat that? لو حاجة مش واضحة.

Listen to this model phone call. Notice the order in which the customer gives the information.

  1. A
Assistant Good afternoon, Criterion Theatre box office. How can I help?
  2. C
Customer Hello, I'd like to book two tickets for the Friday performance of 'Laugh Out Loud', please.
  3. A
Assistant Certainly. That's Friday twenty-first March. How many tickets?
  4. C
Customer Two, please. How much are they?
  5. A
Assistant Twenty-five pounds per ticket. Would you like to pay by card?
  6. C
Customer Yes, please. Thank you for your help.
  7. A
Assistant You're welcome. Enjoy the show!

Hello, I'd like to book two tickets for the Friday performance, please.

This is a model opening for a phone booking. Notice: polite opener + show + date + number + 'please'.

Required

Practise the opener for your own booking. Keep your voice friendly and clear.

Hello, I'd like to book two tickets for Friday evening, please.

Required

Practise asking for a specific seat type. Keep the /ʃ/ in 'seats' long and soft.

Could I have two seats in the stalls, please?

Required

You are calling the Criterion Theatre to book two tickets for 'Laugh Out Loud'. Decide: what date? what seat type? how will you pay? Start the call politely and follow the three stages: open → details and questions → pay and close.

Writing

Writing

6 cards

In the final section, you will write a short invitation message to a friend, asking them to come to a show with you. A good invitation is short, friendly and contains all the information your friend needs to say yes — the what, the when, the where and the how much.

Here is a model invitation written by a learner:

Hi Maya,

I'm going to see a comedy show called 'Laugh Out Loud' at the Criterion Theatre on Friday, 21st March. The show starts at 8 pm and tickets are £25 each.

Would you like to come with me? I think you'd really enjoy it. We could grab a drink before the show and have dinner afterwards.

Let me know by Wednesday so I can book the tickets online.

Speak soon, Layla

Notice the model uses several useful pieces of language:

  • Would you like to …? — a polite way to make an offer or invitation
  • I'd like to invite you to … — a more formal alternative
  • Let me know by … — a soft way to ask for a reply by a certain date
  • We could … — a suggestion, less direct than let's

Strategy tip: Using polite questions and suggestions

Invitations in English sound natural when you use polite questions (Would you like to …? / Do you want to …?) and soft suggestions (We could … / How about …?). Avoid direct commands such as Come with me — they sound rude. Using would and could keeps the tone friendly and respectful.

A useful layout for an invitation message is:

  1. GreetingHi + first name
  2. What and where — the show and the venue
  3. When — the date and time
  4. How much — the price (optional but helpful)
  5. The invitationWould you like to come?
  6. A small suggestion — e.g. a drink or dinner before/after
  7. Reply by whenLet me know by …
  8. Sign-offSpeak soon, / Love, / Best,

When you write your own invitation, keep it short — about 50 to 70 words. Read it aloud to check that it sounds friendly and natural before you send it.

  • إيه وأين (What and where): وضّح اسم العرض والمكان، مثلاً "I'm going to see a comedy show called Laugh Out Loud at the Criterion Theatre".
  • إمتى (When): التاريخ والوقت، زي Friday, 21st March و 8 pm.
  • بكام (How much): السعر، زي £25 each — ده اختياري بس بيساعد صاحبك يخطط.
  • الدعوة نفسها (The invitation): استخدم سؤال مؤدب زي Would you like to come with me? بدل ما تقول Come with me، لأن الأمر المباشر ممكن يبقى فيه قلة أدب في الإنجليزي.
  • اقتراح صغير (A small suggestion): زي We could grab a drink before the show — ده بيخلي الدعوة أدفى وأقرب.
  • حد أقصى للرد (Reply by when): Let me know by Wednesday — طريقة لطيفة تقول لحد إمتى محتاج رد.
  • الخاتمة (Sign-off): استخدم حاجة بسيطة زي Speak soon, أو Best, أو Love,

نصايح مهمة للستايل

في اللغة الإنجليزية، الدعوات بتطلع طبيعية لما تستخدم الأسئلة المؤدبة (polite questions) زي Would you like to…? و Do you want to…?، والاقتراحات الناعمة (soft suggestions) زي We could… و How about…?. خلي بالك إن الأفعال المساعدة would و could بتدي نبرة محترمة وودودة جداً، فحاول دايماً تستخدمها في الدعوات. حاول تخلّي رسالتك بين 50 و 70 كلمة، واقرأها بصوت عالي قبل ما تبعتها عشان تتأكد إنها سليمة وطبيعية.

الخلاصة: لو كتبت Hi + name، وضّحت الـ what والـ where والـ when والـ how much، وختمت بسؤال مؤدب واقتراح بسيط، رسالتك هتطلع ممتازة.

Strategy tip: Using polite questions and soft suggestions. In English invitations, use Would you like to …? to make the offer, and We could … to suggest a plan. These forms are friendly and respect your friend's right to say no. Avoid direct commands such as Come with me — they can sound rude.
