L'histoire

The Mystery of the Missing Marmalade

Every summer, the village of Meadowgrove held its famous fête. Stalls lined the green, selling everything from hand-knitted scarves to homemade cakes. But the star of the show was always Mrs. Higgins’ marmalade. She had won first prize at the county fair three years running, and people came from miles around just to taste it.

This year, ten jars of her prize-winning marmalade were displayed on a table near the entrance. A sign read: “Award-Winning Marmalade – One Jar £3.” By mid-morning, a small crowd had gathered, eager to buy a jar before they sold out.

That’s when young Tom Bennett noticed something odd. He had been helping his mum at the book stall, but his eyes kept wandering to the marmalade table. At half past eleven, he saw Mrs. Higgins step away to chat with the vicar. When she returned, her face turned pale. “My marmalade!” she cried. “It’s all gone!”

The villagers gasped. Tom pushed through the crowd. “Don’t touch anything,” he said, though he wasn’t sure why. He had read enough detective stories to know that clues were important. Sure enough, he spotted something sticky on the tablecloth. He bent down and sniffed. Orange marmalade. A trail of it led away from the stall.

Tom followed the sticky trail past the cake stand, around the tombola, and straight to the petting zoo. There, behind a pen of fluffy rabbits, sat old Mr. Thompson. His hands were covered in marmalade, and an empty jar lay at his feet. A guilty look crossed his face as Tom approached.

“Mr. Thompson!” Tom said. “Did you take the marmalade?”

The old man sighed. “I couldn’t help it, lad. I’ve been craving Mrs. Higgins’ marmalade for weeks. I meant to pay, but then I saw her talking to the vicar, and I just… panicked.” He held out a crumpled £3 note. “I’ll pay for it now, I promise.”

Tom took the money and helped Mr. Thompson to his feet. “Come on,” he said. “Let’s go explain to Mrs. Higgins.”

By the time they returned, Mrs. Higgins had already heard the news. She wasn’t angry—just relieved to have her marmalade back, even if most of it had already been eaten. “Well,” she said, patting Mr. Thompson’s hand, “I suppose I can forgive you this once. But next time, just ask! I always keep a jar or two in the cupboard.”

The fête carried on, and Tom was hailed as the hero of the hour. As he walked home that evening, sticky fingers and all, he decided that detective work was even more exciting than he had imagined. Maybe next year, he’d solve another mystery—if Meadowgrove had any left!
