The Bakery Bandit of Bristol

The Mysterious Disappearances

Every morning at four o’clock, the old brass bell above the door of Gran’s Crust bakery jingled. That was the signal for sixteen-year-old Mia to tie her apron and start kneading dough. But for the past three weeks, something strange had been happening. Bags of flour vanished overnight, leaving the shelves bare and the floor dusted with white footprints.

“Grandad,” Mia said one evening, hands on her hips, “if we lose another delivery, we’ll have to close. No flour, no bread.”

Grandad wiped his floury hands on his trousers and sighed. “I’ve set extra locks, but the bandit still slips in. Maybe it’s time we set a proper trap.”

The Plan Takes Shape

The next afternoon, Mia and Grandad stayed late. They mixed a special batch of dough—extra sticky, extra sweet. “This’ll slow any thief down,” Grandad chuckled. They shaped it into little buns and placed them in a line leading from the back door to the flour sacks.

Mia sprinkled a trail of flour across the floor, too. “If the bandit follows the buns, we’ll see the prints clearly.” She set her alarm for half-past three, determined to catch the culprit in the act.

The Midnight Chase

The alarm buzzed. Mia crept downstairs, torch in hand. The back door stood ajar. She tiptoed inside and gasped. A small, furry creature was munching the last sticky bun, its paws covered in flour. It looked up, eyes wide.

“A raccoon!” Mia whispered. She remembered the news stories about urban wildlife. This clever little thief had been sneaking in for weeks.

Grandad appeared behind her, chuckling. “Well, I never. Let’s get it out before it decides to stay for breakfast.”

Together, they herded the raccoon outside. Mia propped the door open with a brick and left a bowl of nuts far away from the bakery. “That should keep you busy,” she told the raccoon, who scampered off into the bushes.

A Sweet Solution

The next morning, the flour sacks were untouched. Mia and Grandad celebrated with fresh cinnamon rolls. From that day on, they left a small bowl of treats outside each night. The flour thefts stopped, and the bakery thrived.

“Funny how the best solutions are often the simplest,” Grandad said, handing Mia a warm roll.

Mia grinned. “And the sweetest.”
