L'histoire

The Vanishing Violin of Vienna House

Lena had always loved Vienna House. The old manor stood on a hill, its red roof peeking through the trees. Inside, the walls were lined with portraits of stern-faced ancestors, and the air smelled of beeswax and old books. But what Lena loved most was the music room. There, behind a glass case, rested the Vienna Violin—a priceless instrument played by her great-grandfather, the famous composer Anton Weber.

One rainy afternoon, Lena arrived for her weekly violin lesson with Mr. Bauer, the family’s elderly music tutor. She hung up her coat and hurried to the music room, eager to practise. But when she reached the glass case, her heart sank. The violin was gone. Only a single silver key lay on the velvet cushion where the instrument should have been.

“Mr. Bauer!” Lena called, her voice trembling. The old man appeared at the door, his bushy eyebrows knitted together. “It’s missing,” she said. “The Vienna Violin has disappeared.”

Mr. Bauer’s face turned pale. “This is serious, Lena. That violin is worth a fortune. We must tell your father at once.”

But Lena hesitated. Her father, Lord Weber, was a busy man, always travelling for business. If she told him, he might cancel her lessons or worse—send her away to boarding school. She couldn’t let that happen. So instead, she made a decision. “Let me look into it first,” she said. “Maybe it’s just a misunderstanding.”

The Clues Begin

Lena started her investigation in the music room. She examined the glass case but found no fingerprints or signs of a break-in. The only clue was the silver key. She turned it over in her hand. It looked old, like something from a different era.

Next, she questioned the staff. Mrs. Keller, the housekeeper, had seen nothing unusual. “I was in the kitchen all morning,” she said, stirring a pot of soup. “But I did hear footsteps in the hall around eleven.”

Lena’s heart raced. Footsteps at eleven—just when she had been practising in the garden. She rushed to the hall and noticed something odd. A small painting of her great-grandfather was slightly crooked. When she straightened it, she found a tiny keyhole hidden behind the frame. Her hands shook as she inserted the silver key. With a click, a secret compartment opened, revealing a yellowed letter.

The letter was dated 1942 and addressed to Anton Weber. It read: “The violin must be hidden. They are coming for it. Bury it where only family will find it.”

The Truth Uncovered

Lena’s mind whirled. During the war, her great-grandfather had hidden the violin to protect it. But where? She thought of the garden, the old oak tree near the fence. It had a hollow trunk—perfect for hiding something small.

She ran outside, the rain soaking her clothes. The oak tree stood tall, its branches swaying in the wind. Lena knelt and reached into the hollow. Her fingers brushed against something smooth and cool. She pulled out a wooden box. Inside, wrapped in silk, was the Vienna Violin.

Just then, she heard footsteps. Mr. Bauer appeared, his umbrella dripping rainwater. “Lena!” he exclaimed. “You found it!”

Lena smiled, holding up the violin. “It was never stolen. It was hidden all along.”

That evening, Lena played the violin for her father. The music filled the house, rich and warm. Lord Weber listened, his eyes wide with surprise. “I had no idea,” he said. “Your great-grandfather never spoke of this.”

Lena grinned. “Some secrets are meant to be uncovered.” And as the last note faded, she knew Vienna House would always hold mysteries—and she was ready to solve them.
