L'histoire

The Puzzle of the Peak District Pony

Tom had worked on the hills above Edale since he was old enough to hold a crook. Every morning, he climbed the same path to check his flock, but one Tuesday in late October the routine felt different. A cold wind rattled the dry bracken, and the sun struggled through thin cloud. As he reached the top of Mam Tor, he saw something odd near the old stone barn where the rare fell ponies were kept.

One of the stable doors hung open. Tom ran down the slope, his wellies slipping on the wet grass. Inside, the straw was scattered, and the smallest pony—Misty, with her dappled coat—was gone. Only her halter lay in the corner, snapped clean in two.

“She never breaks free,” Tom muttered. Then he remembered the figure he’d glimpsed from the corner of his eye: a tall person in a dark coat and a flat cap, leading something away from the barn. The cap had been pulled low, hiding the face. Tom had thought it was just a walker, but now he wasn’t so sure.

He phoned the farmer, Mr. Briggs, who arrived in his muddy Land Rover ten minutes later. “This is bad business,” Briggs said, scratching his beard. “Misty’s worth a small fortune, and she’s due at the show in Buxton next week.”

Tom described the shadowy figure. Briggs frowned. “Sounds like that bloke who’s been asking about ponies in the pub. Said his name was Carter, but I didn’t like the look of him.”

The next morning, Tom set off early, determined to find Misty. He followed the hoof prints that led away from the barn and across the moor. The trail ended at a narrow lane where a set of tyre tracks began. Tom knelt down. Stuck in the mud was a single black button—just like the ones on the coat of the man in the flat cap.

He hurried to the village and knocked on the door of the only B&B. The owner, Mrs. Patel, recognised the description. “Aye, Mr. Carter left at dawn. Said he was heading north.” She handed Tom a crumpled receipt. “He paid cash, but he left this in the bin.” On the back was a phone number and the words “Buxton Showground, Saturday.”

Tom borrowed Briggs’s van and drove straight to Buxton. The showground was already busy when he arrived. He searched the horse boxes until he spotted a familiar dappled coat. Misty was tied to a trailer, her ears twitching nervously. Beside her stood a man in a flat cap, arguing with a judge.

“That’s her!” Tom shouted. “She was stolen from Edale.”

The judge called the police, and soon the man—whose real name was Derek Carter—was led away. Misty nuzzled Tom’s shoulder as if to say thank you. Briggs clapped Tom on the back. “You’ve got a sharp eye, lad. We’ll make a detective of you yet.”

That evening, Tom sat by the fire in the pub, Misty’s lead rope tied to his chair. The whole village had turned out to celebrate. As he sipped his lemonade, he smiled. The hills felt safe again, and the puzzle of the Peak District pony was finally solved.
