L'histoire

The Case of the Curious Car Boot Sale

Every Sunday morning, Derek loved visiting the car boot sale at the old football ground. He was always on the lookout for interesting objects from the past. This particular Sunday, something caught his eye.

A man in a long grey coat had set up a small table near the entrance. On it sat six beautiful antique pocket watches. They were identical, with gold cases and delicate chains. The man wore a top hat and smiled mysteriously at everyone who walked past.

"These watches belonged to a famous inventor," the man told Derek. "They were made over a hundred years ago. They're worth a fortune now."

Derek examined one of the watches closely. It looked genuine. The glass was scratched and the metal was worn in a way that only happens with age. He paid twenty pounds for it and felt pleased with himself.

When he got home, Derek showed the watch to his wife, Sarah. She looked at it carefully and then at the time on her phone. "It says eight forty-five," she said, "but the watch says six thirty." Derek laughed and wound it up. "It probably hasn't worked for years. That's why he was selling it so cheap."

Over the next week, Derek kept thinking about those watches. How strange that the man had exactly six identical ones. Why would someone sell so many at once? And why would an inventor make six watches that all showed different times?

The following Sunday, Derek returned to the car boot sale. He found the same man at the same spot, selling the same watches. This time, a woman was buying one.

"Excuse me," Derek said. "I bought one of these watches last week. None of them keep the right time."

The man in the top hat simply smiled. "Of course they don't," he said. "They're not supposed to. They're decorations. They were made for the inventor's six grandchildren. Each grandchild lived in a different country, and each watch showed the time in a different city."

Derek thought about this. "But none of those cities are in Britain," he said.

The man winked. "Exactly." He gathered his things and walked away, leaving Derek standing there, holding a watch that suddenly seemed much more interesting than it had before.
