The Mystery of the Missing Market Stall

The Last Stall Standing

Every Saturday, the High Street Market in Littleford buzzed with life. Among the colourful stalls, none was more popular than Old Tom’s Sweet Emporium. Children flocked to his jars of humbugs, toffees, and rainbow drops. But one Sunday morning, when the first traders arrived, Tom’s stall had vanished—poop!—without a trace.

“It’s gone, the whole bloomin’ thing!” cried Mrs. Patel, who sold hand-knitted scarves next door. She pointed at a patch of wet grass where the stall should have been. All that remained was a single, muddy boot and a set of deep tyre tracks leading towards the river.

A Trail of Clues

Detective-in-training (and part-time paperboy) Jake Carter crouched beside the boot. “Size ten, well worn,” he muttered. “Tom’s boots are size nine. This isn’t his.” He followed the tyre tracks, which grew fainter near the riverbank. There, half-hidden in the reeds, he spotted something glinting—a silver locket with the initials “E.W.” engraved inside.

“E.W.,” Jake repeated. “Who’s that?” He remembered seeing a new face at the market the day before—a woman selling handmade candles. She’d set up near the old bridge, but her stall had been empty by lunchtime. “Could she be involved?”

The Candle Maker’s Secret

Jake hurried to the address on the candle stall’s sign. The door creaked open before he could knock. A woman with tired eyes stood there, holding a broom. “You’re the boy from the market,” she said. “Looking for your missing stall?”

“Yes, and I think you know something about it,” Jake replied. “Your locket was by the river.”

The woman sighed. “That stall wasn’t stolen. It was *borrowed*. My husband, Eddie, used to run it. He passed away last winter, and I’ve been struggling to keep our candle business going. I took Tom’s stall to sell my candles, but I panicked when I saw how popular it was. I thought I’d be in trouble, so I moved it to the riverbank last night. But then I lost my nerve and left it there.”

A Sweet Resolution

Jake helped Mrs. Wilson (for that was her name) retrieve the stall. Together, they wheeled it back to the market square. Tom, who’d been searching high and low, threw his hands up in relief. “There you are, you old rascal!”

Mrs. Wilson apologised, and Tom, ever the softie, offered her a spot next to his stall. “You can sell your candles here every Saturday,” he said. “And I’ll even throw in a bag of humbugs for your trouble.”

As for Jake, he earned himself a free lifetime supply of rainbow drops—and a reputation as Littleford’s sharpest young detective. Not bad for a morning’s work.
