L'histoire

The Midnight Train

The last service from Edinburgh Waverley to London King's Cross was never truly quiet. Even at half past midnight, the Caledonian Sleeper carried its peculiar collection of souls: exhausted businesspeople, students returning from Highland holidays, and the occasional mysterious traveller who preferred the anonymity of darkness. David Morrison had worked the night shift for seven years, and he knew them all by their silhouettes.

But the man in carriage seven was new. He sat rigidly upright, his expensive coat immaculate despite the hour, and he clutched a brown leather briefcase to his chest as though it contained his own heartbeat. David noticed the man's eyes darting to every shadow, every movement in the corridor. Something was wrong.

As the train thundered south through the sleeping countryside, David made his routine checks. When he reached carriage seven, the man stood abruptly, demanding to know when they would reach Newcastle. His voice trembled with barely concealed anxiety. David informed him that Newcastle was still two hours away, and he noticed the man's hand slip into his jacket pocket, withdrawing a sealed envelope. The paper was thick, official-looking, marked with a company's confidential stamp.

"Lost my boarding pass," the man muttered, sitting back down too quickly.

David continued his inspection but remained alert. He'd encountered thieves and drunks before, yet this felt different. The man's fear wasn't of discovery by authorities—it was fear of something else entirely. When David passed carriage seven twenty minutes later, he heard the man speaking urgently into a mobile phone.

"The package is secure. I'll deliver it as promised. No, they don't suspect anything."

The word "package" confirmed David's suspicions. He immediately contacted the train's control centre by radio, explaining what he'd overheard. The duty manager authorised him to observe the passenger without confrontation until the train reached its destination, where British Transport Police would be waiting.

The hours that followed were tense. David maintained his professional duties while watching the man from the corner of his eye. The passenger grew increasingly agitated, checking his watch and the darkened windows. At one point, he attempted to leave his seat, but David politely informed him that the restaurant car was closed. The man retreated, his face pale beneath the fluorescent lights.

When the train finally shuddered into King's Cross at dawn, two officers in plain clothes were waiting on the platform. David identified the passenger, who attempted to flee but was swiftly detained. The sealed envelope was recovered and later proved to contain stolen intellectual property worth millions—design specifications for a pharmaceutical breakthrough that a rival corporation had paid handsomely to acquire.

During the investigation, it emerged that the man was a former employee of the targeted company who had been recruited by corporate spies to extract the documents. His panicked behaviour on the train had been the result of a growing paranoia; he suspected he was being followed, though by whom remained unclear.

David Morrison received no public recognition for his vigilance. There were no headlines mentioning the night-shift guard who had saved a company from industrial sabotage. Yet sometimes, when he worked the midnight service, he remembered the weight of those silent hours and the peculiar satisfaction of knowing that justice, however quiet, had been served.

The last train from Edinburgh had carried its usual cargo of sleeping passengers—but it had also delivered something far more valuable than any of them realised. It had delivered the truth.
