L'histoire

The Missing Relics of Ashford Manor

Every year on the first weekend of September, Ashford Manor transformed into a living museum. Volunteers from across the county gathered in their carefully researched period costumes, transforming the grand house into scenes from different centuries. Eleanor had been participating for seven years now, and she knew every creaking floorboard and dusty corner of the building.

This particular Saturday morning had begun beautifully. The autumn sun streamed through the tall windows as visitors wandered through the Georgian ballroom, admiring the replica artefacts arranged on velvet cushions. Eleanor was dressed as a lady's maid from 1780, and she was explaining the intricacies of corset lacing to a group of fascinated children when Marcus, the head curator, approached her with a troubled expression.

"Eleanor, I need a word. Privately." His voice was tense, and she followed him immediately into the servants' corridor behind the kitchen.

"Three artefacts have vanished from the strongroom," Marcus whispered. "A medieval pilgrim's badge, an Elizabethan ring, and a Stuart-era miniature portrait. All genuinely valuable, all irreplaceable."

Eleanor's heart sank. "During the event? But the strongroom was locked."

"That's precisely what troubles me. Only four people possess keys. Myself, Patricia who manages the gift shop, Dr. Hussain who donated the portrait, and..." Marcus hesitated. "A volunteer named James Hartley. He arrived only last month."

The name meant nothing to Eleanor. She had not noticed any unfamiliar faces among the regular volunteers. Later that afternoon, she made a point of finding James Hartley. He was posing for photographs near the recreated Victorian study, dressed impeccably as a country gentleman from 1860.

"Lovely event," she remarked, watching him carefully.

"It certainly is," he replied with a warm smile. "I always admired these historical weekends as a child. My grandmother used to bring me."

Eleanor noticed something peculiar. James wore an antique pocket watch that hung from his waistcoat with a particular flourish. Yet the demonstration notes she had studied specified that watches of that era were typically kept in trousers pockets, not displayed so prominently.

"That watch," she said casually. "Is it a family heirloom?"

James' expression flickered momentarily. "An old purchase from an antique market. Nothing special, really."

Eleanor excused herself and found Marcus in his office. "I need to borrow Dr. Hussain's key," she said. "And I need to see the insurance photographs of the Stuart portrait's frame."

An hour later, Eleanor stood before James Hartley once more. This time, she was not smiling.

"The frame of the miniature portrait contains a hidden compartment," she explained. "Designed to hold a small mirror or a lock of hair. On the frame's left edge, there's a small scratched mark, shaped like a crescent moon. It matches a similar mark on the pocket watch you're wearing." She paused. "Both belonged to the same person. Sir Charles Ashworth, who lived here in 1620."

James Hartley's confident facade crumbled. He confessed that he had been researching his family tree when he discovered his ancestor's connection to Ashford Manor. Desperate to possess these personal relics of his heritage, he had fabricated references to volunteer at the event.

"I never intended to cause real harm," he said quietly as Marcus called the police. "I only wanted something that was rightfully mine."

Eleanor watched the police lead him away and felt a curious mixture of sadness and satisfaction. History, she reflected, was more than dusty objects in glass cases. It was the stories that connected people across centuries, sometimes in ways that led to unexpected consequences.
