L'histoire

The Woodland Café

Eleanor Marsh had owned The Woodland Café for seven years, and she could remember a time when the little wooden building had been full every weekend. Families would come for walks through the pine forest, then stop for homemade soup and fresh bread. But lately, things had changed. A new motorway had opened, directing traffic away from the country lanes, and the café sat increasingly empty, its cheerful yellow doors suddenly looking rather sad.

Eleanor was considering her options one grey October morning when the bell above the door chimed. A woman in her fifties stood there, wrapped in a green woollen coat, her grey hair escaping from beneath a matching hat. She carried a worn leather notebook and looked completely lost.

"I'm looking for somewhere quiet," the woman said, sitting down at the nearest table without waiting to be invited. "Somewhere I might be allowed to sit in a garden and write. My name is Harriet Crane."

Eleanor almost dropped the coffee pot she was holding. Harriet Crane was the celebrated nature writer whose books about British wildlife had sold millions of copies. Her most recent novel, The Secret Life of Oaks, had spent thirty weeks on the bestseller list.

"Your garden," Harriet continued, gesturing toward the large woodland garden at the back of the café, "would be perfect. I need trees. I need birdsong. I need somewhere that feels forgotten by the modern world."

"I'm not sure you'd find what you're looking for here," Eleanor admitted. "Business has been rather slow lately."

Harriet smiled for the first time. "That sounds absolutely perfect to me."

They reached an agreement quickly. Harriet would pay a small weekly amount to use the garden as her workspace. Eleanor would make her tea and provide lunch each day. Neither of them anticipated what would happen next.

Within a fortnight, Harriet's regular presence had become part of the café's routine. Each morning, she would settle at her favourite oak table with a pot of tea and her notebook, watching the squirrels and writing about the changing seasons. Eleanor enjoyed the company, and it was nice to have someone to talk to again.

Then, one Saturday, a young man appeared at the door holding a copy of The Secret Life of Oaks. "I read online that Harriet Crane works here," he said breathlessly. "Could I possibly meet her?"

Within hours, the café was full. People had travelled from as far as Scotland to catch a glimpse of the famous writer in her natural habitat. Eleanor served tea and cake to a queue that stretched down the lane, her kitchen working overtime to keep up with demand.

"I had no idea," Harriet said apologetically when Eleanor finally found a quiet moment. "My readers are devoted, but I never imagined they would find me here. I can leave if I'm causing problems."

Eleanor considered the situation carefully. The café had been transformed. Customers who had simply come hoping to see Harriet were now ordering proper meals, buying Eleanor's famous scones, returning week after week to enjoy the peaceful woodland setting. Word had spread that this was somewhere special.

"Stay," Eleanor said firmly. "But perhaps we should work together. Make this place into something truly wonderful."

Over the following months, they did exactly that. Harriet began hosting informal reading groups in the garden during summer evenings. Eleanor introduced a special menu featuring wild herbs and mushrooms, inspired by Harriet's descriptions in her books. Local journalists wrote about "the café where the famous writer finds her inspiration," and visitors came from across the country.

By the following autumn, The Woodland Café had become a destination in its own right. Harriet's new book, A Year in Eleanor's Garden, was dedicated to "the best tea-maker in England." Eleanor, standing in her cheerful yellow doorway watching the families arrive, had never felt so grateful for a lost customer and a wrong turn in the lane.
