Welcome to the Unit 1 Review! In this unit, you learned how to use the verb be (am, is, are), how to say where you are from, and how to introduce yourself.

The verb be has three forms:

Subject be Example
I am I am a student.
he / she / it is She is from Brazil.
you / we / they are They are doctors.

You also learned countries (Brazil, France, Japan, the United States, Egypt) and nationalities (Brazilian, French, Japanese, American, Egyptian). Remember: a nationality is an adjective. It always starts with a small letter in English.

You practiced introductions:

  • Hello! My name is Sara.
  • I am from Egypt. I am Egyptian.
  • Nice to meet you!

For example, 'I am from Egypt' tells where you are from. 'I am Egyptian' tells your nationality. Use 'I am from + country' with a country name, and 'I am + nationality' with a nationality word.

Using capital letters: Use a capital letter (A, B, C…) for the first word of a sentence, for the word I, and for the names of people, countries, and cities. → I am from Egypt. (capital I, capital E in Egypt)

Writing task: Write a short self-introduction. Say your name, where you are from, your nationality, and your job or student status (3–5 sentences).

فعل be - أهم فعل في الإنجليزي

فعل be هو أهم فعل في اللغة الإنجليزية، وله 3 صور مختلفة حسب الفاعل:

  • I am → بتتكلم عن نفسك. مثال: I am a student (أنا طالب).
  • He is / She is / It is → بتتكلم عن حد تالت أو حاجة. مثال: She is from Brazil (هي من البرازيل).
  • You are / We are / They are → بتتكلم عن أكتر من شخص. مثال: They are doctors (هم دكاترة).

الـ countries والـ nationalities

اتعلمنا أسماء بلاد زي Egypt, Brazil, France, Japan, the United States، واتعلمنا الجنسيات بتاعتها: Egyptian, Brazilian, French, Japanese, American.

قاعدة مهمة جداً: الجنسية دايماً بتبدأ بحرف صغير في الإنجليزية. يعني نقول Egyptian مش Egyptian.

ازاي تقدّم نفسك

الـ introduction البسيطة في الإنجليزي بتبقى كده:

  • Hello! My name is Sara. (أهلاً! اسمي سارة)
  • I am from Egypt. I am Egyptian. (أنا من مصر. أنا مصري/مصرية)
  • Nice to meet you! (سعيد/ة بلقائك!)

لاحظ الفرق المهم: بنقول I am from + country name (اسم بلد زي Egypt)، وبنقول I am + nationality (جنسية زي Egyptian).

الـ capital letters (الحروف الكبيرة)

في الإنجليزية لازم تكتب حرف كبير في 4 أماكن:

  • أول كلمة في أي جملة
  • كلمة I (أنا) - دي دايماً كبيرة
  • أسماء الناس زي Sara, Omar
  • أسماء البلاد والمدن زي Egypt, Cairo, Paris

A model self-introduction. Notice: capital I, capital E in Egypt, and the verb be in every sentence.

PREPARE — Before you write, gather your ideas. Answer these four questions in a small list:

1) What is your name? 2) Where are you from? 3) What is your nationality? 4) What is your job? (or: I am a student.)

Keep your answers short and simple. You will use them in your writing.

WRITE — Now write a short self-introduction. Use 3 to 5 sentences. Start with 'Hello!' or 'Hi!'. End with 'Nice to meet you!'. Use the verb be (am / is / are) in every sentence.

Example: Hello! My name is Tom. I am from France. I am French. I am a student. Nice to meet you!

REVIEW — Check your writing with this checklist:

1) Did I use a capital letter at the start of every sentence? Did I use I (capital) for myself? Did I use a capital letter for my country and city? 2) Did I use am, is, are in the right places? 3) Did I write 3–5 sentences? 4) Did I say my name, country, nationality, and job (or 'student')? 5) Did I end with 'Nice to meet you!'?

If the answer to any question is 'no', fix it now.
