When we give directions in English, we use imperatives. An imperative is a sentence that tells someone what to do. The verb comes first, with no subject (no 'you') and no 'to'.

We use imperatives to tell people to do something (positive) or not to do something (negative). For negative imperatives, we add don't before the verb. Look at the table:

Type Example How to make it
Positive imperative Turn left. Start with the verb
Negative imperative Don't turn right. Don't + verb
Polite request Excuse me, can you help me? Start with 'Excuse me'

Look at the direction verbs: turn, go, walk, take. These verbs come first in a direction. After the verb, we add the place: 'Turn left', 'Go straight', 'Walk two blocks'.

For asking for directions, we use polite questions like 'Excuse me, how do I get to the bank?' or 'Where is the hospital?'. We can add 'please' to be very polite.

(Positive Imperative)

في الجملة الإيجابية، بتحط الفعل في الأول ومفيش حاجة قبله. لما تقول "Turn left on Main Street"، إنت بتقول للشخص "لفّ شمال عند شارع مين". لاحظ إن الفعل turn جه في أول الجملة من غير ما تقول you turn - عشان كده دي جملة imperative. القاعدة بسيطة: ابدأ دايماً بالفعل.

الجملة السلبية (Negative Imperative)

لو عايز تقول للشخص ما يعملش حاجة معينة، بتحط don't قبل الفعل. مثلاً: "Don't turn right at the traffic light" يعني "ما تلش يمين عند الإشارة". الـ don't دي معناها زي "لا" أو "ما...ش" في العربي. التركيب دايماً بيكون: Don't + verb.

طلب بأدب (Polite Request)

لما تسأل مش بتأمر، لازم تبدأ بـ "Excuse me" عشان تكون مؤدب. دول أشهر الجمل اللي هتحتاجها:

  • Excuse me, can you help me? (لوزمتك تساعدني؟)
  • Excuse me, how do I get to the bank? (أزاي أوصل للبنك؟)
  • Where is the hospital? (فين المستشفى؟)

الأفعال المهمة في الاتجاهات

في أربع أفعال أساسية لازم تعرفهم كويس:

  • turn (لفّ)
  • go (روح / كمّل)
  • walk (امشي)
  • take (خد / اتبع)

الفعل في الاتجاهات دايماً بييجي في الأول، وبعده بتحط الاتجاه زي left أو right أو straight، وأحياناً بتحط المكان زي on Main Street أو at the traffic light.

في التمارين

في الأسئلة اللي جاية، ركز دايماً على مكان الفعل - لو في الأول يبقى ده imperative. وشوف كويس لو الجملة فيها don't يبقى المطلوب يكون فعل بعد الـ don't على طول من غير ما تفكر كتير.

Turn left on Main Street.

A positive imperative. The verb 'turn' is first.

Don't turn right at the traffic light.

A negative imperative. We add 'don't' before the verb.

Emma is a visitor in a new city. She is on the street and she is lost. She wants to go to a place, but she does not know the way. Tom is a local person. He lives in this city and he knows the streets well.

Before you listen, think: Emma is looking at her phone. She looks confused. What do you think she wants to ask Tom? She probably wants directions to a place.

Now listen to the dialogue. Emma asks Tom for directions, and Tom tells her how to get to the bank. Pay attention to the direction words: turn, left, right, straight, next to.

You will hear these phrases: 'Can you help me?', 'Where do you want to go?', 'Walk straight for one block', 'Then turn left', 'next to the coffee shop', and 'You're welcome'. Try to remember which way Emma goes.

بعدها على طول اسأله Can you help me? يعني "ممكن تساعدني؟". الجملة دي زي المفتاح اللي بيفتح أي محادثة في الشارع.

إزاي تسأل عن المكان اللي عايز تروحه

لما حد يسألك Where do you want to go? يعني "عايز تروح فين؟"، بترد بالجملة اللي فيها I want to go to متبوعة بالمكان. مثلاً: I want to go to the bank. كمان تقدر تسأل عن البعد: Is it far from here? يعني "بعيد من هنا؟"، والرد بيكون إما No, it's not far أو Yes, it's far.

الكلمات المهمة عشان توصف الطريق

  • Walk straight — يعني امشي على طول
  • Turn left — لف شمال
  • Turn right — لف يمين
  • on the right — على اليمين
  • on the left — على الشمال
  • next to — جنب أو قريب من

مثال من المحادثة

Tom قال لـ Emma: "Walk straight for one block. Then turn left." يعني امشي على طول مربع سكني واحد، وبعدين لف شمال. وكمان وضّح لها إن البنك on the right و next to the coffee shop يعني جنب الكوفي شوب.

التحية والرد على الشكر

لما حد يساعدك وتبي تشكره، بتقول Thank you very much وهو بيرد عليك You're welcome.

نصيحة للحفظ

حاول تربط الكلمات دي ببعض: straight → left → right → next to. كل ما تستخدمها في محادثات حقيقية، هتلاقيها سهلة أكتر.

Emma is lost on the street. She asks Tom for directions to the bank.

  1. E
Emma Excuse me. Can you help me?
  2. T
Tom Sure. Where do you want to go?
  3. E
Emma I want to go to the bank. Is it far from here?

English has many long vowel sounds. Today we look at the /ɔː/ sound, like in the word 'walk'. This sound is in many common English words.

How to make the /ɔː/ sound:

  • Open your mouth wide and round, like a big circle.
  • Put your tongue in the back of your mouth and low.
  • Let the sound go on for a long time — it is a long vowel.
  • Your lips are rounded and pushed forward a little.
  • The sound is a voiced sound — your voice is on.

Try saying 'ahhh' but with round lips. That is close to /ɔː/. The /ɔː/ sound is in the word walk, but it is not in 'work' (which uses /ɜː/). Listen carefully to the difference.

Here are more words with the /ɔː/ sound: walk, talk, four, store, your, more, before, door, floor. You will hear this sound a lot in everyday English.

  • your (بتاعك)
  • more (أكتر)
  • door (باب)
  • floor (أرضية)
  • before (قبل / قدّام)

نصيحة للتمرين

لو واقف قدام المراية، افتح بقك استدير وقول "ahhh" بهدوء، بس خلي شفافك مستديرة ومقدّمة. كده هتلاقي صوتك قريب جداً من الـ /ɔː/. في التمرين اللي جاي، اسمع الصوت كويس أوي وبعدين كرره ورا المتحدث علطول.

To make /ɔː/: round your lips wide. Put your tongue low and at the back. Hold the sound for a long time. Voice is on. Try: 'awww' with round lips.

Required

Listen. Which word do you hear?

  • walk
  • work
Required

Read the word aloud. Round your lips and make the /ɔː/ sound long.

walk

Required

Read the sentence aloud. Notice the /ɔː/ sound in 'walk'.

  • 'You're welcome.'

Listen to the model dialogue. Tom asks for the hotel, and Emma gives directions. Then you will practice the same conversation yourself.

  • Excuse me. Where is the hotel? يعني لو سمحت، الفندق فين؟
  • Excuse me, how do I get to the bank? يعني لو سمحت، أوصل البنك إزاي؟

لاحظ الفرق: where is بنستخدمها لما المكان قريب في نفس المنطقة، لكن how do I get to بنستخدمها لما المكان أبعد ومحتاج تمشي خطوات أكتر.

ثانياً: إزاي تقول directions

لما حد يسألك عن مكان، بتستخدم imperative verbs يعني أوامر مباشرة من غير ما تضيف please:

  • Go straight يعني امشي على طول
  • Turn left يعني لف شمال، وTurn right يعني لف يمين
  • for one block يعني مسافة عمارة أو عمارتين، والـ block هو المربع السكني بين شارعين

وبتقول فين المكان بالظبط باستخدام prepositions مهمة:

  • on your right = على إيدك اليمين
  • on your left = على إيدك الشمال
  • across from = قصاد، يعني مقابل تماماً
  • next to = جنب، يعني ملاصق

ثالثاً: إزاي تتأكد من المكان

لو مش متأكد من الوصف، ممكن تسأل سؤال تاني زي Is it next to the restaurant? يعني هل هو جنب المطعم؟ والرد بيكون Yes, it's across from the restaurant أو No, it's on the corner يعني على الناصية.

رابعاً: الرد المهذب

في الآخر، لما حد يساعدك، لازم تشكره بـ Thank you very much. والرد بيكون You're welcome. دي جملة بسيطة بس مهمة عشان تخلي المحادثة مريحة.

ملحوظة على النطق

في الـ dialogue اللي هتسمعه، Tom هو اللي ضايع في الشارع وبيسأل، و Emma هي اللي بتساعده. ركز على نطق الـ r في كلمات زي right و across، وحاول تنطق الجمل كاملة من غير ما توقف.

Tom is a visitor. He asks Emma for directions to the hotel.

  1. T
Tom Excuse me. Where is the hotel?
  2. E
Emma Go straight for one block. Then turn left. The hotel is on the right.
  3. T
Tom Is it next to the restaurant?
  4. E
Emma Yes, it's across from the restaurant.
  5. T
    Tom Thank you very much.
  6. E
    Emma You're welcome.

Excuse me, how do I get to the bank?

A polite way to ask for directions. 'How do I get to ___?' is very common.

To give and follow directions, you need some key words. These words tell you where to go. They are short and very common in English.

Look at this table with eight important direction words and phrases:

Word / Phrase Type Example
turn verb Turn left at the next street.
left noun / adverb The school is on the left.
right noun / adverb Turn right after the bank.
straight adverb Go straight for two blocks.
next to preposition The park is next to the hotel.
across from preposition The restaurant is across from the station.
between preposition The bank is between the school and the park.
on the corner phrase The coffee shop is on the corner.

You will hear these words in many directions. Left and right tell you which way to turn. Straight means go forward. Next to, across from, between, and on the corner tell you where a place is.
