Useful phrases: arrange to meet a friend

When you want to meet a friend, you usually do three things: (1) check if your friend is free, (2) suggest a time and a place, and (3) confirm the plan. Here are the most common phrases for each step.

Step 1: Check if your friend is free

English (UK)
Are you free on Friday?
What are you doing this weekend?
Do you have any plans?

Step 2: Suggest a time and a place

English (UK)
Do you want to meet up?
How about the park?
Let's meet at the café.
What time?
How about three o'clock?

Step 3: Confirm

English (UK)
Sounds great!
See you on Friday.
See you at three.
OK, that's fine.

In British English, you will also hear Shall we…? for soft suggestions: Shall we meet at the café? It is a little more polite than Let's in some situations, but both are correct. In speaking we use many contractions: I'm free, Let's go, It's fine, I'll see you. In writing the full forms are also OK, but contractions feel more natural and friendly.

Notice the question intonation rises on Are you free? and What time?. We use falling intonation on statements like See you on Friday.

After you read the phrases, listen to a real conversation. Then you will match phrases to their functions, put a conversation in order, and practise two key sentences aloud.

تقدر تقول "Are you free on Friday?" . أو "Do you have any plans?" . وكمان "What are you doing this weekend?"

الخطوة التانية: تقترح مكان ووقت لو قال لك إنه فاضي، تقدر تقترح عليه: "Do you want to meet up?" بعدين لو عايز تقترح مكان معين، قول "How about the park?" أو "Let's meet at the café" يعني "يلا نقابل في القهوة". أو اقترح أنت "How about three o'clock?"

وبعدين اقفل الكلام بـ "See you at three" أو "See you on Friday" عشان تأكد الموعد.

كتير، مثلاً "Shall we meet at the café?".
  • في الكلام العادي، بنستخدم اختصارات كتير زي "I'm free" و "Let's go" و "I'll see you".
و "What time?". أما الجمل العادية زي "See you on Friday" الصوت بينزل في الآخر.

Listening

Listening

Listening: arranging to meet

Scene: It is Thursday evening. Emma phones her friend Tom. They want to arrange to meet this weekend. Listen for the day, the time and the place they choose.

Before you listen: Will they meet on Saturday or Sunday? Will they go to a café, a park or somewhere else?

In British English, you will hear two common patterns for making a plan together:

  • Let's + bare infinitive: Let's meet at the café. (I am in the plan too.)
  • Shall we + bare infinitive: Shall we meet at three? (a soft suggestion.)

You will also hear time prepositions: on + day (on Saturday), at + time (at three), in + part of day (in the afternoon). These small words are very important — they tell you the day, the time and the place.

Emma and Tom use simple present and present continuous for fixed plans (I'm free this weekend), and they use will for the future arrangement: I'll see you on Saturday. Listen for the contraction I'll = I will. In British English, the /l/ in I'll is often dropped in fast speech.

Numbers are important here. Listen for:

  • Days of the week (Saturday, Sunday)
  • Times (three o'clock)
  • Time expressions (for ages = a long time)

You will hear the dialogue twice. The first time, just get the general idea — who is calling, why, and what kind of place they decide to go to. The second time, listen for the exact day, time and place. After the dialogue, you will answer three questions: first about the main idea (gist), then a specific detail, and finally you will write one missing word from the conversation.

أول حاجة، لما تحب تسأل صاحبك لو فاضي، بتقول "Are you free this weekend?"

لو عايز تقترح إنكم تقابلوا، عندك تعبيرين مهمين: "Do you want to meet up?" أو "Let's meet up."

لمّا تسأل عن الوقت المناسب بتقول "When is good for you?"

  • "How about Saturday afternoon?"
  • "How about three o'clock?"

زي: "Let's meet at the café in the park."

  • on مع الأيام: on Saturday
  • at مع الساعة: at three o'clock
  • in مع أجزاء اليوم: in the afternoon

I haven't seen you for ages"

شكلها: have/has + past participle.

"Let's" و "Shall we" — فرق بسيط

مثال: "Let's meet at the café."
  • Shall we + bare infinitive: مثال: "Where shall we meet?"

"I'll" هي اختصار "I will" وبتعني "هَـ". في جملة زي "I'll see you on Saturday" معناها "هشوفك يوم السبت".

ركز على day و time و place — دول الـgist بتاع الحوار.

The /aɪ/ sound in English (UK)

In British English, the sound /aɪ/ is a long diphthong — your mouth moves while you say it. It is the vowel sound in time, Friday, five, like, my and right. You will use this sound many times in this lesson, because words like Friday, five, nine and time all contain it. If you can say /aɪ/ clearly, people will understand you when you give a day, a time or a price.

How to make the sound:

  1. Start with your mouth open and relaxed. Your tongue is low and at the front of your mouth.
  2. Move slowly: lift your tongue high to the front and close your jaw at the same time.
  3. The sound is voiced — your throat vibrates. Touch your throat with your hand and you can feel it.
  4. Your lips stay relaxed. Do not round them. Do not smile too much.

The sound is long — about twice as long as a short vowel like /ɪ/ or /e/. Keep it smooth and connected. Do not break it into two separate sounds.

Example words with /aɪ/:

Word Meaning
time
Friday
five
like
nice
my

Watch out: /aɪ/ is different from /eɪ/ in place, eight and great. Both are diphthongs, but /aɪ/ starts with the mouth more open, and /eɪ/ starts with the mouth half-closed. Compare right /raɪt/ and rate /reɪt/ — the endings sound very different. In this lesson you will hear the difference in the listening and you will practise the sound in the speaking.

  • time — وقت
  • Friday —
  • five o'clock — الساعة خمسة
  • right — صح / يمين

  • /aɪ/ بيبدأ بضمك مفتوح أكتر (زي في right و five و my)

  • right → /raɪt/
  • rate → /reɪt/

/aɪ/ — the 'I' sound

Start with your mouth open. Your tongue is low and at the front. Then close your mouth slowly and lift your tongue high. The sound is long and voiced — your throat vibrates. Keep it smooth: do not break it into two sounds.

Practise these words: time, Friday, five, like, my, right.

Required

Listen. Which word do you hear?

  • right
  • rate
Required

Say the word. Mouth open at the start, then close slowly. Long sound.

time

Required

Say the day. Two syllables: FRI-day. The first syllable has the long /aɪ/.

Friday

Required

Say the time. Long /aɪ/ in 'five', then a quick /ə/ in 'o'clock'.

five o'clock

Reading

Reading

6 cards

Reading: a short message from a friend

Strategy: Scanning for specific information

When you read a short message, you do not need to understand every word. Skim the message first — read it quickly to get the main idea. Then scan for the specific information you need: the day, the time and the place.

To scan, move your eyes quickly over the text. Look for capital letters (days of the week, names) and numbers (times, dates). These are easy to spot and usually hold the key information.

Key words to scan for:

English (UK)
free
meet up
café
afternoon

Time prepositions in English

In English, the prepositions for time are different from Arabic. Learn these patterns:

  • on + day: on Saturday, on Friday morning
  • at + time: at 3 o'clock, at noon
  • in + part of day: in the afternoon, in the evening

In the next step you will read Mia's message to her friend Sam. It is short — about 70 words. Focus on the day, the time, the place and the activity. You will then answer one question about the main idea and three questions about the details.

لو عايز تقترح على حد إنكم تقعدوا مع بعض، بتقول let's meet up أو shall we meet up?.

لو بتتكلم عن يوم في الأسبوع، بتستخدم on، زي on Saturday أو on Friday morning. لو بتقول وقت بالظبط بالساعة، بتستخدم at، زي at 3 o'clock أو at noon. ولو بتتكلم عن جزء كبير من اليوم، بتستخدم in، زي in the afternoon أو in the evening.

خد بالك: تقول in the morning مش at the morning، وتقول on Monday مش in Monday.

Speaking

Speaking

6 cards

Speaking: arrange to meet a friend

When you arrange to meet a friend, three things are important:

  1. Be polite — use Would you like…? or Do you want to…?
  2. Be clear — say the day, the time and the place.
  3. Be flexible — offer a second option in case the first is not good.

Useful phrases for the conversation:

English (UK)
Are you free on Saturday?
What are you doing this weekend?
Do you want to meet up?
How about the park?
Let's meet at three.
Shall we meet at the café?
Sounds good!
See you then.

Model conversation (6 turns):

A: Are you free on Saturday? B: Yes, I think so. Why? A: Do you want to meet at the café? B: Sure! What time? A: How about three o'clock? B: Sounds good! See you there.

In British English, Shall we…? is very common for soft suggestions: Shall we meet at three? We also use 's for What is and 'll for will: I'll see you then. These contractions are natural in speaking.

Before you speak:

  • Choose one day, one time and one place.
  • Use at least three phrases from the table.
  • End with See you on [day] at [time]!

  • كن polite (مؤدب) — استخدم عبارات زي Would you like…? أو Do you want to…?

  • Are you free on Saturday? —
  • What are you doing this weekend?

  • Do you want to meet at the café?
  • Shall we meet at three?
  • How about the park?
  • Let's meet at three o'clock.

  • Sounds good!
  • Yes, I think so.
  • Sure! What time?

  • See you then. أو See you there.

  • Emma: Are you free on Saturday?
  • Tom: Yes, I think so. Why?
  • Emma: Do you want to meet at the café?
  • Tom: Sure! What time?
  • Emma: How about three o'clock?
  • Tom: Sounds good! See you there.

British English

  • 's بدل what is → مثلاً: What's the time?
  • 'll بدل will → مثلاً: I'll see you then.

See you on [day] at [time]!

Listen to the model conversation. Notice the day, time and place.

  1. E
Emma Are you free on Saturday?
  2. T
Tom Yes, I think so. Why?
  3. E
Emma Do you want to meet at the café?
  4. T
    Tom Sure! What time?
  5. E
    Emma How about three o'clock?
  6. T
Tom Sounds good! See you there.

Let's meet at three o'clock on Saturday.

Listen and repeat this key sentence. Notice the stress on 'meet', 'three' and 'Sat-ur-day'.

Required

Ask your friend if they are free on Saturday. Question intonation goes up at the end.

Are you free on Saturday?

Required

Suggest a time and a place. Use 'let's' to include yourself in the plan.

Let's meet at three o'clock at the café.

Required

You are talking to your friend Tom. You want to meet this weekend. Use phrases like 'Are you free…?', 'How about…?' and 'Let's meet…'. Choose a day, a time and a place.

Writing

Writing

6 cards

Writing: a short message to arrange a meeting

When you write a message to a friend, you do not need to be formal. Short sentences are perfect. A good message has three parts:

  1. A greeting (Hi… / Hey…)
  2. The plan (Are you free…? Let's meet…)
  3. A closing question or sign-off (Let me know! See you!)

Model message (50 words):

Hi Sam, Are you free on Saturday? I want to go to the new café in town. Let's meet at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. After coffee, we can walk in the park. Is Saturday OK for you? Let me know! Mia

Notice how Mia uses:

  • A greeting: Hi Sam
  • A question: Are you free on Saturday?
  • A time phrase: at 3 o'clock in the afternoon
  • A suggestion: Let's meet… and we can walk…
  • A closing question: Is Saturday OK for you?
  • A friendly close: Let me know!

Using time prepositions and contractions

Time prepositions in English can be tricky. Learn these patterns:

  • on + day: on Saturday, on Friday morning
  • at + time: at 3 o'clock, at noon
  • in + part of day: in the afternoon, in the evening

Contractions make your message sound natural and friendly: I'm (I am), let's (let us), it's (it is), we'll (we will), you're (you are).

In the next steps, you will check the model message, then write your own short message to a friend. Choose a day, a time, a place and an activity. Read it aloud when you finish.

Hey Alex.
Are you free on Saturday? Let's meet at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
Is Saturday OK for you? أو Let me know!

(Time prepositions)

  • on + يوم من الأسبوع أو تاريخ: on Saturday, on Friday morning, on 5th May
  • at + الساعة بالظبط: at 3 o'clock, at noon, at 7 pm
  • in + جزء من اليوم أو الشهر أو السنة: in the afternoon, in the evening, in July

  • I'm = I am
  • let's = let us
  • it's = it is
  • we'll = we will
  • you're = you are

مثلاً بدل ما تكتب I am free، اكتب I'm free. وبدل Let us meet، اكتب Let's meet.

Using time prepositions and contractions

In English, time prepositions are important. Look at the model:

  • 'on Saturday' — we say on + day
  • 'at 3 o'clock' — we say at + time
  • 'in the afternoon' — we say in + part of day

Contractions make your writing sound natural and friendly:

  • let's (let us)
  • I'm (I am)
  • it's (it is)
  • we'll (we will)

In your own message, try to use at least two time prepositions and one contraction.

Required

Mia writes 'on 3 o'clock' in her message.

Required

Which contraction does Mia use in her message?

  • I'm
  • let's
  • it's
  • we'll
Required

Now write your own short message to a friend. Use a day, a time, a place and an activity. Use at least one contraction. Then read your message aloud.

Hi! Are you free on Saturday? Let's meet at three o'clock in the afternoon. See you then!

Required
