In Unit 4 we talked about music — the kinds of music we like, the instruments people play, and the words we use to talk about songs and singers. Music is a great topic because everyone likes something different! In this review we will look again at the music vocabulary, the object pronouns and the present continuous.

Music vocabulary

Here are the key words from the unit. You can use them to talk about your own music taste.

hip hop music with rap and strong beats
folk traditional music from a country

Useful verbs with music: play, listen to, sing, dance, love, like, download, share.

Object pronouns

We use object pronouns after a verb or a preposition. They replace a noun we already mentioned, so we do not repeat it.

Subject pronoun Object pronoun

Look at these examples:

  • I like pop. My brother likes it too. (it = pop)
  • Anna is a singer. I know her well. (her = Anna)
  • My friends are in a band. Do you know them? (them = my friends)

Present continuous

We make the present continuous with am / is / are + verb-ing. We use it for things happening now or around now (this week, today, this month).

  • I am listening to jazz right now.
  • She is playing the guitar.
  • They are singing a new song.
  • This week I am learning the piano.

Writing task

Write a short blog post about your music taste. Use object pronouns and the present continuous. Aim for 60–80 words. Writing strategy: use capital letters at the start of every sentence and for names of people, bands, places and song titles.

أهلاً بيكم يا شباب في الـ review بتاع الوحدة الرابعة! الوحدة دي كانت عن الموسيقى، واتعلمنا فيها كلمات جديدة وقواعد مهمة. تعالوا نفتكرهم مع بعض بالتفصيل.

كلمات الموسيقى (Music Vocabulary)

اتعلمنا أنواع الموسيقى المختلفة:

  • pop — الموسيقى الشعبية فيها أغاني سهلة الحفظ
  • rock — موسيقى صاخبة بالـ guitar الكهربائية
  • jazz — فيها improvise و rhythm قوي
  • classical — زي موسيقى Mozart
  • hip hop — فيها rap و beats قوية
  • folk — الموسيقى التقليدية بتاعة أي بلد

وكمان كلمات تانية مهمة زي concert (حفلة موسيقية)، band (فرقة موسيقية)، lyrics (كلمات الأغنية)، وmusician (الموسيقار أو العازف).

وفي أفعال كتير بنستخدمها مع الموسيقى زي play، listen to، sing، dance، love، like، download، وshare.

Object Pronouns (ضمائر المفعول)

ضماير المفعول دي بنحطها بعد الفعل أو بعد حرف الجر، وبتبدل الاسم اللي اتكلمنا عنه قبل كده عشان ما نكررش:

  • I → me
  • you → you
  • he → him
  • she → her
  • it → it
  • we → us
  • they → them

شوف الأمثلة دي:

  • I like pop. My brother likes it too.
  • Anna is a singer. I know her well.
  • My friends are in a band. Do you know them?

Present Continuous (المضارع المستمر)

القاعدة دي بنعملها بـ am / is / are + verb-ing، وبنستخدمها لما نحكي عن حاجة بتحصل دلوقتي أو حوالين الوقت الحالي (الأسبوع ده، النهاردة، الشهر ده):

  • I am listening to jazz right now.
  • She is playing the guitar.
  • They are singing a new song.
  • This week I am learning the piano.

الـ verb-ing بنعملها بإضافة -ing للفعل، ولو الفعل بينتهي بـ e بنشيلها ونضيف ing زي make → making.

مهمة الكتابة (Writing Task)

المطلوب إنك تكتب blog post قصير عن ذوقك في الموسيقى من 60 لـ 80 كلمة، وتستخدم object pronouns و present continuous. وافتكر دايماً تستخدم capital letters في أول كل جملة وفي أسماء الناس والفرق والأماكن والأغاني. يلا بينا!

Read this sentence about your music taste aloud. Speak clearly and remember the object pronoun 'it'.

PREPARE — gather your ideas.

Before you write, make a short list. Ask yourself:

  1. What kind of music do you like? (pop, rock, jazz, classical, hip hop, folk…)
  2. Who is your favourite singer or band?
  3. How often do you listen to music? When? (every day, on the way to work, at the weekend…)
  4. Are you learning to play an instrument at the moment?
  5. Do you go to concerts? With whom?

Keep this list beside you. You will use these ideas in your blog post.

WRITE — your blog post.

Write a short blog post about your music taste. Start with: 'Hi! Let me tell you about my music taste.'

Try to include:

  • at least three object pronouns (me, you, him, her, it, us, them)
  • at least two sentences in the present continuous (am/is/are + verb-ing)
  • 5–6 music words from this unit (pop, rock, band, concert, lyrics…)

Aim for 60–80 words. Don't forget capital letters at the start of sentences and for names of bands, singers, places and song titles.

REVIEW — check your writing.

Read your blog post again and check:

  1. ☐ Did I start every sentence with a capital letter?
  2. ☐ Did I use capital letters for names (of bands, singers, cities, songs)?
  3. ☐ Did I use at least three object pronouns correctly?
  4. ☐ Did I use the present continuous (am/is/are + verb-ing) at least twice?
  5. ☐ Did I use music vocabulary from this unit?
  6. ☐ Is every sentence a complete sentence?
