Welcome to the Unit 15 Review. In this unit you learned how to talk about hotels and to describe where things are. You practised three important areas: hotel vocabulary, there is / there are and prepositions of place. Now is the time to look at all of this again and check that you feel confident.
There is and there are are short ways to say what is in a place. We use there is (or there's) with singular nouns: There is a lift in the hotel. We use there are with plural nouns: There are three restaurants. In questions, we say Is there…? for one thing and Are there…? for more than one. In negative sentences we say there isn't and there aren't.
Prepositions of place tell us exactly where something is. Common prepositions are: in, on, at, next to, between, behind, in front of, opposite, above, under and near. We often use them after there is / there are: The pool is behind the hotel. There is a car park in front of the building.
Hotel vocabulary includes words like reception, lobby, lift, single room, double room, key, floor, book, guest, breakfast, Wi-Fi, bathroom, shower, towel, bed, view and balcony. You can use these to describe a hotel and the room where you stay.
Writing task: Write a short review of a hotel (about 80–100 words). Describe the hotel, say where things are and say what is good or bad about your stay.
Using capital letters
Always use a capital letter at the start of a sentence, for the word I, and for names of places and hotels: I stayed at the Grand Hotel. The pool is on the roof. Don't use capital letters for normal nouns.

PREPARE — gather your ideas
Before you write your hotel review, take five minutes to think:
• Name and place: What is the name of the hotel? Where is it?
• The room: What is in your room? Where is the bathroom, the bed, the window?
• The hotel: What does the hotel have? Is there a restaurant, a lift, a swimming pool, Wi-Fi?
• Good or bad? What do you like? What do you not like?
Write four short notes under each heading. These notes are your plan — you do not need full sentences yet.
WRITE — your hotel review
Now write your review in 80–100 words. Start like this:
I stayed at the ___ Hotel last weekend. There is a ___ in the room and the bed is ___ the window. The hotel is ___ the city centre. There is a ___ on the ground floor. I ___ the hotel because ___.
Use there is / there are for the things in your room and in the hotel. Use prepositions of place to say where things are. Remember to use capital letters for the start of each sentence, for I, and for the name of the hotel.
REVIEW — check your writing
Read your review and check:
Capital letters: Does each sentence start with a capital letter? Is I a capital letter? Is the hotel name a capital letter?
There is / there are: Did you use is for one thing and are for more than one?
Prepositions of place: Did you use words like next to, behind, in front of, on, in?
Spelling: Check the spelling of the new hotel words.
Word count: Aim for about 80–100 words.
