12 cards

English uses three small prepositions — at, on and in — to say when something happens. Choosing the right one depends on how specific the time is. Big periods of time take in, smaller periods take on, and the most precise moments take at.

Look at the table below. The further right you go, the more specific the time becomes, and the shorter the preposition gets.

Preposition Used with Examples
in months, years, seasons, centuries, parts of day in March, in 2025, in winter, in the 21st century, in the morning
on days, dates, specific mornings/afternoons/evenings on Monday, on 25th December, on Friday evening, on Christmas Day
at clock times, festivals, night, weekend (UK) at 7.30, at midnight, at noon, at Christmas, at the weekend

A few common expressions are fixed phrases. We say at night (not in the night), at the weekend (UK English), and at the moment. We say in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening, but if the morning/afternoon/evening is specified, we use on: on Monday morning, on a cold evening in January.

With dates, we can write 25th March 2025 and read it as the twenty-fifth of March twenty twenty-five. In informal speech, people often say March the twenty-fifth or March twenty-fifth. The preposition on always comes before a date: We met on 25th March.

Negative and questions with these prepositions follow the normal word order — the preposition does not move: The film starts at 8 p.m. / The film doesn't start at 8 p.m. / What time does the film start?

حروف الجر الزمنية: at, on, in

  • in March / in 2025 / in the morning / in winter
  • on Monday / on 25th December / on Christmas Day / on Friday evening
  • at 7.30 / at midnight / at noon / at the weekend

شوف الجملة دي من الدرس: The train leaves at half past nine in the morning. هنا at بيحدد الساعة بالظبط، وin بيحدد جزء من اليوم. وجملة تانية: We always have a family dinner on Christmas Day. هنا on لأنه يوم محدد.

تعبيرات ثابتة لازم تحفظها

  • بنقول at night مش "in the night".
  • بنقول at the weekend في الإنجليزي البريطاني.
  • بنقول at the moment.
  • بنقول in the morning / afternoon / evening بشكل عام.

بس لو حددت الصبح أو المساء بيوم معين، بنرجع لـ on: on Monday morning أو on a cold evening in January.

التواريخ بتتكتب إزاي؟

بتتكتب 25th March 2025 وبتتقرا the twenty-fifth of March twenty twenty-five. في الكلام العادي الناس بتقول March the twenty-fifth أو March twenty-fifth. ولاحظ إن on دايمًا بيجي قبل التاريخ: We met on 25th March.

النفي والسؤال

حروف الجر دي ما بتتحركش في النفي أو السؤال. يعني:

  • The film starts at 8 p.m.
  • The film doesn't start at 8 p.m.
  • What time does the film start?

في التمارين اللي جاية، ركز على السؤال ده: هل الوقت ده فترة كبيرة، يوم، ولا لحظة بالظبط؟ ده اللي هيحددلك الاختيار بين in و on و at.

The train leaves at half past nine in the morning.

Notice the prepositions.

We always have a family dinner on Christmas Day.

You are going to listen to a short phone conversation between two friends, Sophie and Liam. They are trying to meet up at the weekend and need to agree on a day, a time and a place.

Before you listen, think about these questions:

  • What do you usually do on Saturday morning?
  • Do you prefer to meet friends in the morning or in the evening?

Listen for these three pieces of information: the day, the time and the place they finally choose. Pay attention to the prepositions Sophie and Liam use — you will hear on Saturday, at half past eleven, in the morning and at the new café.

  • on Saturday (يوم السبت)
  • on Saturday morning (صباح السبت)
  • on Monday morning (صباح الاتنين)
  • at + الأوقات بالظبط أو الأماكن
  • at half past eleven (الساعة eleven ونص)
  • at the new café (في الكافيه الجديد)
  • at the weekend (في الويكند) — وده طبعًا بيختلف عن American English اللي بيقول on the weekend
  • in + أجزاء اليوم أو الشهور أو السنين
  • in the morning (في الصباح)
  • in the afternoon (في الضهر)
  • in the evening (في المسا)
  • in town (في البلد / المدينة)

لاحظ إن Liam بيقول "I'm busy on Saturday afternoon" — يعني استخدمنا on مع اليوم، وin مع جزء اليوم. القاعدة بسيطة كده.

إزاي تسأل على المواعيد

لو عايز تسأل صاحبك لو فاضي، عندك تعبيرات مهمة:

  • Are you free at the weekend? — يعني "إنت فاضي في الويكند؟"
  • What about meeting at half past eleven? — "إيه رأيك نقابل الساعة eleven ونص؟"
  • What's up? — دي تحية عامية بين الأصحاب، زي "إيه الأخبار؟"

اقتراح مكان أو وقت

لما تحب تقترح حاجة، استخدم "Shall we..." أو "What about...":

  • Shall we go to the new café in town? — "نروح الكافيه الجديد اللي في البلد؟"
  • What about meeting at half past eleven in the morning? — "إيه رأيك نقابل الساعة eleven ونص الصبح؟"

التراكيب دي بتدي الكلام نبرة مهذبة وودودة، فبيتقالوا مع الناس اللي إنت عارفهم كويس.

الإجابة والموافقة

لما حد يقترح عليك، تقدر تقول:

  • Eleven thirty is great. — "الساعة eleven وتلت عظيمة." — هنا قالها بالأرقام بدل ما يقولها بالكلام.
  • Let me check… — "استنى أشوف..." — وده تعبير بتقوله لما بتحاول تفتكر مواعيدك.
  • Perfect! — كلمة بسيطة ومعناها "ممتاز!" وبيتقال كتير في الحياة اليومية.

الـ gist بتاع المهمة

ركّز وانت بتسمع على 3 حاجات: اليوم (day)، الوقت (time)، والمكان (place) اللي اتفقوا عليه. مش لازم تمسك كل كلمة من أول مرة، المهم تطلع الـ main idea وتلاحظ الـ prepositions اللي استخدموها عشان توصّل المعلومة صح.

When we talk about dates and times, we use the numbers 13–19 a lot: thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen. And we use the tens: twenty, thirty, forty, fifty. In English, these two groups sound very similar, and learners often mix them up.

The difference is in the vowel sound and the final consonant:

  • -teen (/tiːn/) — long vowel + n sound: thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen
  • -ty (/ti/) — short vowel + no extra consonant: twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety

To make the -teen sound, your tongue stays high in the front of your mouth for the long /iː/, then your tongue tip moves up to touch behind your top teeth to make the /n/. To make the -ty sound, your tongue is lower and more relaxed for the short /ɪ/ (or /ə/), and you do not add an /n/ at the end.

Stress is also different. -teen words have stress on the syllable -teen itself: thirTEEN. -ty words usually have stress on the first syllable: TWEN-ty, THIR-ty.

-teen (long /iːn/) -ty (short /ti/)
thirteen /ˌθɜːˈtiːn/ thirty /ˈθɜːti/
fourteen /ˌfɔːˈtiːn/ forty /ˈfɔːti/
fifteen /ˌfɪfˈtiːn/ fifty /ˈfɪfti/
eighteen /ˌeɪˈtiːn/ eighty /ˈeɪti/

TWENty, THIRty, EIGHty

Tense the '-teen' vowel (long /iː/) and finish with a clear /n/. Keep the '-ty' vowel short and do NOT add an /n/. Stress the first syllable in '-ty' and the second in '-teen'.

Required

Listen carefully. Did you hear the '-teen' or '-ty' number?

  • thirteen
  • thirty

eighteen

When you want to arrange to see a friend in English, you need a few useful phrases. Here is a small toolkit with the prepositions of time you have just learnt.

Function Useful phrases
Suggesting a day Are you free on Saturday? / What about on Sunday morning? / How about in the afternoon?
Suggesting a time Shall we meet at half past three? / What about at seven o'clock? / Is half past nine OK for you?
Suggesting a place Shall we meet at the café? / Let's go to the park. / Do you know the new place in town?
Confirming Great, I'll see you on Saturday at three. / See you at the station in the morning.
Declining politely I'm busy on Friday, but I'm free on Sunday. / I can't in the evening, sorry.

Try to use a preposition of time in every sentence. Native speakers almost never say meet me Saturday morning — they say meet me on Saturday morning.

Listen to the model conversation first, then you will have the chance to speak — and finally to arrange a meeting with the AI yourself.

في الدرس ده هتتعلم إزاي تتفق مع حد على ميعاد تقابله فيه. الفكرة بسيطة، بس لازم تركز على حروف الجر (prepositions) اللي بنستخدمها مع الوقت في اللغة الإنجليزية.

القاعدة الأساسية:

في اللغة الإنجليزية فيه 3 حروف جر أساسية للوقت:

  • on مع الأيام والتواريخ: on Saturday, on Friday, on the 5th of June
  • at مع الساعات والأماكن: at half past ten, at seven o'clock, at the café
  • in مع أجزاء اليوم والشهور والسنين: in the morning, in the afternoon, in July

المحادثة بين Emma و Tom:

Emma بتفتح الكلام بـ 'Hi Tom! Are you free on Saturday?' - يعني بتسأله لو فاضي يوم السبت. Tom بيرد: 'Yes, but only in the morning. Why?' - بيقوله فاضي بس الصبح وبيسأل ليه. Emma بتقترح المكان والوقت: 'Shall we meet at the café at half past ten?' و Tom بيأكد: 'Perfect. I'll see you at the café at ten thirty.' لاحظ إنه كرر المكان والوقت عشان يأكد على الموعد.

حاجات مهمة تفتكرها:

  1. لما تقترح يوم، استخدم on: 'How about on Sunday morning?'
  2. لما تقترح وقت، استخدم at: 'Is half past nine OK for you?'
  3. لما تقترح مكان، استخدم at: 'Let's meet at the park.'
  4. لما ترفض بأدب: 'I'm busy on Friday, but I'm free on Sunday.'
  5. لما تأكد على الميعاد، ادمج الاتنين: 'See you on Saturday at three.'

نصيحة: حاول تحط حرف جر في كل جملة بتقولها. المتكلمين الأصليين مبيقولوش 'meet me Saturday' - لازم 'meet me on Saturday'. كمان لاحظ إننا بنقول 'at half past ten' أو 'at ten thirty'، مش 'at 10:30' في الكلام العادي.

دلوقتي هتسجل صوتك وأنت بتقول الجمل دي، وبعدها هتعمل محادثة حقيقية مع الـ AI.

  5. E
Emma Great. See you on Saturday!

Are you free on Saturday morning?

To talk fluently about dates and time, you need more than just numbers. The words below describe periods of the day, parts of the calendar and historical chunks of time. They appear in everyday conversation, news reports and stories.

Word Part of speech Meaning (Arabic) Example sentence
dawn noun الفجر / بداية النهار We started the journey at dawn.
noon noun الظهر (الساعة 12) The meeting is at noon.
dusk noun الغسق / قبيل الغروب The street lights come on at dusk.
midnight noun منتصف الليل The train leaves at midnight.
weekday noun يوم من أيام العمل I'm busy on weekdays.
weekend noun عطلة نهاية الأسبوع Do you have plans for the weekend?
century noun قرن This church is from the 12th century.
decade noun عقد من الزمن (10 سنوات) I've lived here for a decade.

Notice how the day words often combine with at or on: at dawn, at noon, at dusk, at midnight. The week words take on: on weekdays, on the weekend. The bigger time words take in: in the 21st century, in the next decade.

Listen carefully to the difference between words like noon and night — they look similar but mean very different parts of the day. Noon is 12 p.m. (midday); midnight is 12 a.m. (the middle of the night).

إحنا النهارده بنتعلم كلمات بتستخدمها لما تتكلم عن الوقت - مش بس الساعات والأرقام، لأ كمان أجزاء من اليوم، وأجزاء من الأسبوع، وفترات زمنية كبيرة زي القرن والعقد.

أجزاء اليوم (Periods of the Day)

الكلمات دي بتوصف أوقات مختلفة في اليوم:

  • dawn = الفجر، أول ما النهار يبقى ضو
  • noon = الضهر، الساعة 12
  • dusk = الغسق، قبل ما الشمس تغيب بشوية
  • midnight = نص الليل، الساعة 12 بالليل

القاعدة المهمة هنا: الكلمات دي كلها بتاخد at قبلها: at dawn، at noon، at dusk، at midnight.

أجزاء الأسبوع (Days of the Week)

  • weekday = أي يوم من أيام الشغل (من السبت للخميس مثلاً)
  • weekend = عطلة نهاية الأسبوع (الجمعة والسبت مثلاً)

ودول بياخدوا on: on weekdays، on the weekend.

فترات زمنية كبيرة (Longer Time Periods)

  • century = قرن، يعني 100 سنة
  • decade = عقد، يعني 10 سنين

ودول بياخدوا in: in the 21st century، in the next decade.

غلبان مهم! Confusion Alert

خلي بالك ما تخلطش بين noon و midnight:

  • noon = الضهر (12 p.m.) - نص النهار
  • midnight = نص الليل (12 a.m.) - الساعة 12 بالليل

دول شكلهم قريب من بعض، بس معناهم مختلف خالص! لو قلت The meeting is at noon، يبقى الضهر. لو قلت The train leaves at midnight، يبقى نص الليل.

مثال كامل:

The city is quiet at midnight, but at dawn the streets are full again.

المدينة بتبقى هادية نص الليل، بس مع الفجر الشوارع بتملا ناس تاني. شايف إزاي في جملة واحدة استخدمنا midnight و dawn عشان نوصف يوم كامل؟
