Welcome to the end of Unit 4! This unit looked at life in a café: the words we use for drinks and food, the polite phrases we use to order, and the grammar of countable and uncountable nouns with quantifiers. In this review, we will put all of that together and then write a short café review.

Café vocabulary

A café is full of useful everyday words. Here are some of the most common ones you met in Unit 4:

tea, coffee, water, juice, hot chocolate sandwich, cake, salad, soup, toast menu, bill, table, waiter, customer

You can use these words in phrases like a cup of tea, a glass of juice, a piece of cake or a bowl of soup. Notice that we use the partitive ("a cup of", "a glass of", "a piece of") because tea, juice, cake and soup are uncountable in English.

Countable and uncountable nouns

A countable noun is something we can count with numbers: one sandwich, two coffees, three cakes. We can say a sandwich or an apple. An uncountable noun is something we cannot count as separate items: water, bread, sugar, coffee, milk. We never say two waters or a sugar — we say some water or a spoonful of sugar.

This matters in a café because many drinks and foods are uncountable. We say "I'd like some coffee, please" or "a cup of coffee". A sandwich or a cake is countable, so we can say "I'd like a sandwich" or "two pieces of cake".

Quantifiers

Quantifiers are little words that tell us how much or how many. Some quantifiers go with countable nouns, some with uncountable nouns, and some can go with both:

In a café, you might ask "How much coffee do you want?" (uncountable) or "How many sugars do you take?" (countable). Use some in positive sentences: "I'd like some tea, please." Use any in negatives and questions: "Have you got any orange juice?" / "We don't have any milk."

Ordering politely

Useful phrases for a café:

  • Can I have a coffee, please?
  • I'd like a cheese sandwich.
  • What do you recommend?
  • How much is that?
  • Could I have the bill, please?

These polite questions will be useful in your writing, too.

Writing task: A short café review

You are going to write a short review of a café (60–90 words). Use the vocabulary and quantifiers from this unit.

Using quantifiers naturally — make sure you use some, any, much, many, a few and a lot of correctly with countable and uncountable nouns. The more you practise them, the more natural they will feel.

في الكافيه هتلاقي دايماً ثلاث حاجات أساسية:

  • حاجات تانية (other things): menu، bill، table، waiter، customer

بس خلي بالك، في إنجليزي بنستخدم حاجة اسمها partitive، يعني لازم تقول a cup of tea أو a glass of juice أو a piece of cake أو a bowl of soup. متنفعش تقول "a tea" لأن tea هنا uncountable.

الأسماء المعدودة والغير معدودة

Countable nouns هي اللي تقدر تعدها بالأرقام، زي:

  • one sandwich، two coffees، three cakes
  • بتقول a sandwich أو an apple

Uncountable nouns هي اللي متنفعش تعدها واحدة واحدة، زي:

  • water، bread، sugar، coffee، milk
  • متنفعش تقول "two waters" أو "a sugar"، بتقول some water أو a spoonful of sugar

الـ Quantifiers (كلمات الكمية)

دي كلمات صغيرة بس مهمة جداً، بتدل على how much أو how many:

  • مع المعدود (countable): many، few، a few، a number of
  • مع الغير معدود (uncountable): much، little، a little
  • مع الاتنين (both): some، any، a lot of، lots of

في الكافيه مثلاً بنقول:

  • How much coffee do you want? (لأن coffee غير معدودة)
  • How many sugars do you take? (لأن sugars معدودة)
  • "I'd like some tea, please."
  • "Have you got any orange juice?"

الطلب بأدب

لما تطلب في كافيه، استخدم عبارات زي:

  • Can I have a coffee, please?
  • I'd like a cheese sandwich.
  • What do you recommend?
  • How much is that?
  • Could I have the bill, please?

مهمة الكتابة: Café Review

دلوقتي المطلوب إنك تكتب café review قصير من 60 لـ 90 كلمة. حاول تستخدم كل اللي اتعلمته: vocabulary الكافيه، والـ quantifiers صح، والعبارات المؤدبة. ركز على إنك تستخدم some و any و much و many و a few و a lot of في مكانها الصح.

PREPARE — Before you write

Think of a café you know (real or imaginary). Make a short list:

  1. The name of the café.
  2. Two or three things you can order there (drinks and food).
  3. One thing you like about it.
  4. One thing that could be better.

You can use words from the café vocabulary table in the explanation above.

WRITE — Your café review

Write a short café review (60–90 words). Start like this: 'My favourite café is called ...'

Mention:

  • what you can order (use the café vocabulary),
  • how much things cost (use much, many),
  • and say if you recommend it (use some, any, a few, a lot of).

Try to use at least three different quantifiers in your review.

REVIEW — Check your writing

Read your review again and check the following:

  1. Capital letters at the start of every sentence and for the café name?
  2. Did you spell countable and uncountable nouns correctly (a sandwich, some coffee, a piece of cake)?
  3. Did you use SOME in positive sentences and ANY in negatives and questions?
  4. Did you use MUCH with uncountable nouns (water, coffee, sugar) and MANY with countable nouns (sandwiches, cakes, sugars)?
  5. Did you end every sentence with a full stop (.)?

If you can answer yes to all five, your review is ready!
