Welcome to the Unit 7 review! In this unit, you learned how to talk about photography in English, and you practised two important tenses: the present perfect and the past simple. This review will help you check what you remember and prepare a short piece of writing about your own photography experiences.

Photography vocabulary

Photography has its own special vocabulary. Here are some of the most useful words from this unit:

When you talk about photography, you usually need a noun and a verb together, for example: I took a photo of the mountains or She developed the film yesterday. You can also describe the result of an action: a focused shot, a framed picture, a developed photo. The word photography comes from Greek and means 'writing with light' — and a good photographer knows how to use light well.

Present perfect vs past simple

The present perfect (have/has + past participle) is used when the time is not finished, or when the result is important now. We often use it to talk about life experiences or recent events. The past simple is used when we talk about a finished time in the past, for example with yesterday or last year.

Present perfect Past simple
I have taken ten photos today. I took ten photos yesterday.
She has never used a tripod. She used a tripod on holiday last summer.
We have just developed the film. We developed the film in 2019.
Have you ever shot a portrait? When I was a child, I photographed my dog.

Signal words

  • Present perfect: ever, never, just, already, yet, so far, today, this week, since, for, before.
  • Past simple: yesterday, last week/month/year, ago, in 2010, when I was a child, on Monday.

A useful tip: if you see a finished time word like yesterday or last year, choose the past simple. If you see ever, never, just, already or yet, choose the present perfect.

Writing task

For the writing task, you will write a short paragraph (around 80–100 words) about your photography experiences. You should use both the present perfect and the past simple to show you can use them correctly. Try to mention at least three photography words from the unit. Before you write, you will prepare your ideas. After you write, you will review your work for capital letters, full stops and correct tense use.

Using capital letters

Remember: in English, we use a capital letter at the start of every sentence, for the personal pronoun I, and for the names of people, places and months. We also use a capital letter for days of the week and nationalities. Good writers check their capitals carefully at the end of writing — it is one of the easiest ways to make your work look more professional.

المفردات - Photography Vocabulary

في التصوير، الكلمات مربوطة ببعض - يعني بتلاقي noun و verb بيشتغلوا مع بعض. مثلاً:

  • take a photo / take a picture (تصوير صورة)
  • develop a film (تحميض فيلم)
  • use the flash (استخدام الفلاش)
  • focus on something (التركيز على حاجة)
  • set up a tripod (تركيب الحامل)
  • look through the viewfinder (النظر من العدسة)
  • frame a shot (تأطير اللقطة)
  • adjust the light (ضبط الإضاءة)

كمان ممكن تاخد الفعل وتحوّله لـ adjective عشان تصف النتيجة، زي a focused shot أو a developed photo أو a framed picture.

الفرق بين الـ Present Perfect والـ Past Simple

ده أهم حاجة في الوحدة، والقاعدة بسيطة:

  • Present perfect (= have/has + past participle): لما الوقت مش خلصان، أو لما النتيجة مهمة دلوقتي. بنستخدمها كتير لما نتكلم عن تجارب حياتنا أو أحداث حصلت قريب.
  • Past simple: لما الوقت خلص في الماضي، وبتشوف كلمة بتحدد الوقت زي yesterday أو last year.

أمثلة توضيحية عشان تفهم الفرق:

الكلمات الدالة - Signal Words

  • Present perfect: ever, never, just, already, yet, so far, today, this week, since, for, before

نصيحة ذهبية: لو شفت كلمة وقت خلص زي yesterday أو last year، اختار past simple. لو شفت ever, never, just, already, yet، اختار present perfect.

التكليف - Writing Task

هتكتب paragraph قصير (حوالي 80-100 كلمة) عن تجربتك في التصوير. لازم تستخدم الاتنين من الـ tenses، وتذكر على الأقل 3 كلمات من مفردات التصوير. قبل ما تكتب، جهّز أفكارك. وبعد ما تخلص، راجع الـ capital letters (الحروف الكبيرة) في أول الجملة، عند الـ I، وفي أسماء الناس والأماكن.

PREPARE — Gather your ideas

Before you write, take a few minutes to think about these questions and make short notes:

  • Have you ever taken photos with a real camera? When?
  • When did you last take a photo? What was it of?
  • Do you prefer digital photography or film photography? Why?
  • Have you ever used a tripod, a flash, or a viewfinder?
  • What is your favourite photo that you have taken? When did you take it?

Remember: use the present perfect for life experiences and recent events (e.g. I have taken hundreds of photos), and the past simple for finished times (e.g. I took this photo last summer). Make three to five short bullet points in English to help you write.

WRITE — Your paragraph

Now write a short paragraph of about 80–100 words about your photography experiences. You should:

  • Use at least three of these words: camera, lens, film, flash, focus, frame, shot, tripod, develop, viewfinder, photographer.
  • Use the present perfect at least twice (for experiences and recent events).
  • Use the past simple at least twice (for finished times).
  • Start with a capital letter and end each sentence with a full stop.

Example opening sentence: I have always loved taking photos, and last summer I took my favourite shot of all time.

REVIEW — Check your work

When you finish, read your paragraph again and check these points:

  1. Capital letters — at the start of every sentence, for the pronoun I, and for names of people, places, months and days.
  2. Full stops — at the end of every sentence.
  3. Present perfect — have/has + past participle (e.g. have taken, has developed).
  4. Past simple — regular verbs end in -ed (e.g. photographed); irregular verbs have a special form (e.g. took, shot).
  5. Spelling and word order — especially after never, just, already and ever.

If you find a mistake, correct it. Reading your work aloud can also help you hear errors. A good piece of writing is one that has been reviewed carefully.
