Welcome to the Unit 8 review. In this unit, you looked at life in the city. You learned the names of common places in a town, how to use the English articles a, an and the, and how to talk about what a place has or does not have using there is and there are. This review brings all of that together in one short lesson, with a final writing task at the end.

City vocabulary is the first building block. The table below shows common city places. You will use these words again in the exercises and in your writing.

Articles are small words, but they change the meaning of a sentence. Use a before a consonant sound and an before a vowel sound. So we say a bank (consonant sound) but an airport (vowel sound). Pronunciation matters more than spelling. We say a university (sounds like "you", so a consonant sound) but an hour (the "h" is silent, so a vowel sound). Use a/an the first time you mention something, or when you mean any one of many things. Use the when both the speaker and the listener already know which thing you are talking about. For example: I went to a café yesterday. The café was very busy. The second "café" is no longer new — both people know which one.

There is and there are say that something exists in a place. Use there is with singular nouns: There is a new library in town. Use there are with plural nouns: There are two parks near my flat. In questions, the order changes: Is there a hospital? / Are there any shops? We can also use negatives: There isn't a theatre / There aren't any banks.

Writing task headline: Write a short description of a city you know well (60–80 words). Using capital letters is a small but important writing habit. Always start a sentence with a capital letter: There is a park near my house. The pronoun I is always capital. Names of people, cities and streets also start with a capital letter: London, Main Street, Mr Khan. A capital letter at the start of each sentence tells the reader that a new idea is coming. Good writers use capital letters consistently — they never forget them.

كلمات المدينة (City Vocabulary)

في الوحدة دي اتعلمتوا أسماء أماكن أساسية في أي مدينة، زي bank يعني مصرف، café يعني مقهى، park يعني حديقة، وstation يعني محطة. وكمان كلمات تانية مهمة زي hospital (مستشفى)، library (مكتبة)، museum (متحف)، supermarket (سوبرماركت)، shop (متجر)، restaurant (مطعم)، theatre (مسرح)، cinema (سينما)، وchemist (صيدلية). الكلمات دي هتحتاجوها في أي كلام أو كتابة عن المدينة، فحاولوا تفتكروها كويس.

الأدوات a / an / the (Articles)

الأدوات دي كلمات صغيرة، بس هي اللي بتغير معنى الجملة. القاعدة بسيطة:

  • a بنحطها قبل الصوت الـ consonant (الساكن)، زي: a bank، a park، a shop.
  • an بنحطها قبل الصوت الـ vowel (المتحرك)، زي: an airport، an hour.
  • the بنستخدمها لما المستمع والمتكلم الاتنين عارفين إحنا بنحكي عن إيه بالظبط.

وخد بالك، الحكم على الصوت مش على الحرف. بنقول a university مش an، عشان الـ u بتنطق زي "you" يعني صوت consonant. لكن بنقول an hour عشان الـ h مش بتتنطق، فهي vowel sound فعلاً.

There is و There are

ده تركيب مهم جداً، بنقول بيه إن حاجة موجودة في مكان ما:

  • There is + اسم مفرد: There is a new library in town.
  • There are + اسم جمع: There are two parks near my flat.
  • في الأسئلة بنعكس الترتيب: Is there a hospital? / Are there any shops?
  • في النفي: There isn't a theatre. / There aren't any banks.

الحروف الكبيرة (Capital Letters)

في الـ writing task اللي جاي، المطلوب منكم تكتبوا 60 لـ 80 كلمة عن مدينة تعرفوها كويس. افتكروا دايماً تكتبوا capital letter في: أول كل جملة، وضمير I في أي مكان، وأسماء المدن والشوارع زي London وMain Street.

There is a small park near the station, and there are some lovely cafés around it.

Read this model sentence. It uses 'there is' for a singular noun and 'there are' for a plural noun.

PREPARE — Before you write, think about a city you know well. Make a list of 6–8 places there (for example: park, café, station, supermarket, museum). Next to each place, write a short note: Is there a ___ near your home? Yes, there is / No, there isn't. This gives you the ideas and the grammar you need for your writing.

WRITE — Write a short description of the city (60–80 words). Use there is / there are to say what is in the city, and a / an / the correctly. Example: There is a beautiful park in the centre. There are two cinemas and a big supermarket. There isn't a theatre, but there is a small museum.

REVIEW — Check your writing before you finish. 1) Does every sentence start with a capital letter? 2) Is the pronoun I always capital? 3) Do places, streets and people start with a capital letter? 4) Did you use there is with singular nouns and there are with plural nouns? 5) Did you use a before consonant sounds and an before vowel sounds?
