Welcome to the Unit 14 review! Over the past few lessons, you have explored the world of driving and refreshed your knowledge of three important past tenses in English. This review will help you bring everything together and finish the unit with a short writing task.

The three past tenses you practised are past simple, past continuous and past perfect. Each one tells a different kind of story about the past. Past simple describes completed actions at a specific time: I drove to work at 7 a.m. Past continuous describes an action in progress in the past, often interrupted by something: I was driving when the phone rang. Past perfect describes an action that happened before another past action: I had already parked when you called. Mixing these tenses makes your storytelling clear and natural.

Here is a quick comparison of the three forms:

Tense Form Example
Past simple V2 (or V-ed) She braked suddenly.
Past continuous was/were + V-ing They were overtaking on the motorway.
Past perfect had + V3 He had indicated before turning.

Driving vocabulary covers many areas: the parts of a car (steering wheel, accelerator, brake, gear, rear-view mirror), the road itself (junction, lane, roundabout, motorway, pedestrian crossing), and the people involved (driver, passenger, pedestrian, cyclist). You also practised useful driving verbs: park, reverse, overtake, indicate, refuel and brake. Road signs are also important — a red triangle usually warns you, a red circle gives a prohibition, and a blue circle usually tells you what you must do.

For the writing task, you will write a short story about a memorable car journey. A good strategy is using time markers to sequence your events clearly. Time markers are words like first, then, after that, while, when, suddenly, by the time, finally — they guide the reader through your story. For example: First, I got into the car. While I was driving, it started to rain. By the time I arrived, I was completely soaked. Combining time markers with the right past tense will make your writing much stronger and more interesting to read.

بيتكوّن من was/were + verb-ing. مثال: They were overtaking on the motorway (كانوا بيتخطّوا على الطريق السريع). تالت زمن هو الماضي التام (Past Perfect)، وبنستخدمه لما نحكي عن حاجة حصلت قبل حاجة تانية في الماضي. بيتكوّن من had + V3. مثال: He had indicated before turning (هو كان عامِل إشارة قبل ما يلُفّ).

السرّ إنك تخلط التلاتة مع بعض عشان الكلام يطلع طبيعي. مثلاً: I was driving along the motorway when a lorry suddenly braked in front of me.

الاستراتيجية الأذكى إنك تستخدم time markers أو الكلمات اللي بترتّب الوقت، زي: first, then, after that, while, when, suddenly, by the time, finally. الكلمات دي بتساعد القارئ يمشي مع القصة خطوة بخطوة. جرّب: First, I got into the car. While I was driving, it started to rain. By the time I arrived, I was completely soaked. شُفت إزاي كل جملة مرتبطة باللي قبلاها؟

PREPARE — gather your ideas.

Before you write, think about:

  • A car journey you remember well (it can be a real one or imaginary).
  • Where you went, who was with you, and what happened.
  • How you felt during the journey.

Make a short list of 3–4 key events. Then choose time markers to connect them: first, then, after that, while, when, suddenly, by the time, finally. Plan which tense you will use for each event: past simple for completed actions, past continuous for an action in progress, and past perfect for something that happened earlier.

WRITE — your story.

Write 100–150 words about a memorable car journey. Use past simple for completed actions, past continuous for actions in progress, and past perfect for actions that happened earlier. Try to use at least three time markers to sequence your story clearly. You can begin with: 'I'll never forget the time I drove to ___' — or choose your own opening. Write your story on paper or in a notebook so you can review it afterwards.

REVIEW — check your writing.

When you finish, read your story again and ask yourself:

  • Did I use past simple correctly for completed actions?
  • Did I use past continuous for an action in progress?
  • Did I include at least one past perfect sentence (had + past participle)?
  • Are my time markers clear and in the right order?
  • Have I checked spelling, especially irregular past forms (drove, bought, went, saw, braked, refuelled)?
  • Are capital letters and full stops in the right places?

If something is missing, rewrite that part to make it stronger.
