Book a medical appointment
Everyday English

Everyday English

5 cards

When you need to see a doctor in the UK, you usually start by phoning the surgery (a doctor's office) or by using their online booking system. Phone calls are still very common, especially for urgent problems, and the receptionist is usually the first person you speak to. Knowing the right phrases will help you sound polite, clear, and confident on the phone.

Here is a table of the most useful phrases for booking or rearranging a medical appointment, with their function and a brief Arabic gloss:

English phrase Function Arabic
I'd like to make an appointment, please. arrange a new visit أودّ تحديد موعد، من فضلك
Could I see a doctor today? ask for a same-day appointment هل يمكنني مقابلة طبيب اليوم؟
I'm not feeling well. say you are ill لا أشعر بحالة جيدة
I have a sore throat / a headache / a temperature. describe a symptom عندي التهاب حلق / صداع / حرارة
I've been feeling ill since Monday. say how long you have been sick أشعر بالمرض منذ الاثنين
What time is available? ask about options ما الوقت المتاح؟
Is it urgent? ask about priority هل هو عاجل؟
I'd like to reschedule my appointment. change the date or time أودّ إعادة جدولة موعدي
I need to cancel my appointment. cancel completely أحتاج إلى إلغاء موعدي
Could I see a different doctor? ask for another GP هل يمكنني رؤية طبيب آخر؟
I'll call back later. end the call politely سأتّصل لاحقاً
Thank you very much. Goodbye. end the call politely شكراً جزيلاً. مع السلامة

Polite language is essential in British English, especially on the phone. Notice how many of the phrases above use Could I… or I'd like… instead of a direct command. Give me an appointment sounds rude. Could I make an appointment, please? sounds polite and natural, and receptionists are more likely to find you a convenient slot.

Describing what's wrong does not need to be long. The receptionist will usually ask What's the problem? or Is it urgent? A short, clear answer is best: I have a sore throat and a temperature or I've had a bad headache since yesterday is plenty. The doctor will ask detailed questions later, so you do not need to give a long medical explanation at this stage.

Asking about times is also important. Receptionists often offer one or two options, and you can choose the most convenient one. Common questions include What time is available?, Is there anything earlier?, or Could I see someone this afternoon?

Changing or cancelling is something you may need to do at short notice. Use the same polite forms: I'd like to reschedule my appointment, please, I'm afraid I need to cancel, or Could I book another time? The receptionist will usually be very understanding.

In the dialogue below, you will hear a short phone call between a patient and a receptionist. Listen to the polite forms and the way the patient describes her symptoms. Then in the exercises, you will match phrases to functions, build a sentence word by word, and practise the key phrases aloud.

عشان كده بنستخدم صيغ زي "I'd like…" (أودّ) أو "Could I…" (هل يمكنني) بدل ما تقول الأمر بشكل مباشر. مثلًا، بدل ما تقول "Give me an appointment" (ودّيني موعد) وده ممكن يبقى وقح، بتقول "I'd like to make an appointment, please" (أودّ تحديد موعد، من فضلك). كده بتبيّن احترامك والـ receptionist بيرد عليك أحسن وبيحاول يلاقيلك وقت مناسب.

وصف حالتك ببساطة

لما يسألك الـ receptionist "What's the problem?"، مش لازم تشرح كل حاجة بتفصيل طبي. كلام قصير وواضح هو المطلوب. مثلًا:

  • "I have a really bad headache" (عندي صداع شديد جدًا)
  • "I have a sore throat" (عندي التهاب في الحلق)
  • "I've been feeling ill since Monday" (حاسس إني تعبان من يوم الاثنين)

الـ doctor هيسألك أسئلة تفصيلية بعدين لما تقابله، فـ مش محتاج تدي شرح طبي طويل دلوقتي على التليفون.

السؤال عن المواعيد المتاحة

الـ receptionist غالبًا بيعرض عليك وقت أو اتنين، وإنت بتختار اللي يناسبك. ممكن تسأله:

  • "What time is available?" (إيه الأوقات المتاحة؟)
  • "Is there anything earlier?" (في حاجة أبكر؟)
  • "Could I see someone this afternoon?" (هل يمكنني مقابلة حد بعد الضهر؟)

ولما يقولك مثلًا "I can offer you four o'clock this afternoon with Dr Khan" (أقدر أديك الساعة أربعة بعد الضهر مع دكتور خان)، بترد بـ "That works for me" (ده يناسبني) أو "That sounds good" (ده تمام).

تغيير أو إلغاء الموعد

لو احتجت تغيّر الموعد أو تلغيه لأي سبب، استخدم نفس الأسلوب المهذب:

  • "I'd like to reschedule my appointment" (أودّ تغيير موعدي)
  • "I'm afraid I need to cancel" (للأسف محتاج ألغي)
  • "Could I book another time?" (هل يمكنني أحجز وقت تاني؟)

الـ receptionist غالبًا بيفهم وبيساعدك. ختام المكالمة بيبقى بسيط وبـ "Thank you very much. Goodbye" (شكرًا جزيلاً، مع السلامة).

A patient phones a doctor's surgery to book an appointment.

  1. R
Receptionist Good morning, Hillview Surgery. How can I help you?
  2. P
Patient Hello, I'd like to make an appointment, please.
  3. R
Receptionist Is it for today, or another day?
  4. P
Patient As soon as possible, please. I have a really bad headache.
  5. R

Listening

Listening

5 cards

You are about to listen to a phone call between Sarah Mitchell, a patient, and Mark, a receptionist at Bridge Street Surgery. Sarah has not been feeling well since the weekend, and she is calling to book an appointment to see a doctor. Prediction question: before you listen, what information do you think the receptionist will ask for? (Name, date of birth, contact number, and the problem are all common.)

How can I help you?". القاعدة في إنجلترا إن موظف الاستقبال دايماً بيقول اسم المكان الأول قبل ما يسألك. لاحظ استخدام "How can I help you?" بدل "What do you want?"، عشان دي طريقة مهذبة جداً.

إزاي تطلب حاجة بأدب

سارة بترد بـ "I'd like to make an appointment, please.". هنا "I'd like to" هي اختصار لـ "I would like to"، ودي الطريقة الرسمية والمهذبة لما تطلب حاجة. القاعدة ببساطة: في المحادثات الرسمية، استخدم "I'd like" أو "I would like" بدل "I want".

وصف الأعراض

سارة بتوصف حالها بـ "I have a really sore throat and a temperature.". خلّي بالك:

  • sore throat = زور ملتهب أو وجع في الزور
  • temperature = سخونية (مش درجة الحرارة العادية، دي معنى طبي محدد)
  • really = بتأكد إن الألم شديد

عبارات تانية ممكن تحتاجها:

  • I have a headache (صدري)
  • I have a cough (عندي كحة)
  • I have a stomachache (ألم في معدتي)

المواعيد والاختيار

مارك بيدّي سارة اختيار بين توقيتين: "I have an appointment at four-fifteen this afternoon, or ten-thirty tomorrow morning. Which would you prefer?". في الإنجليزية البريطانية، الأوقات بتتقال على شكل: four-fifteen يعني 4:15، وten-thirty يعني 10:30. و"Which would you prefer?" طريقة مهذبة تسأل بيها حد يختار بين حاجتين.

المعلومات الشخصية

في الآخر، مارك بيقول "Could I take your date of birth?" - وهي طريقة مهذبة جداً لطلب المعلومة، لأن "Could I" بتدّي إحساس إنك بتسأل إذن. سارة بترد بـ "The fifteenth of March, nineteen ninety-two." - وهنا لاحظ:

  • التاريخ بالإنجليزي الكامل: The + رقم + of + الشهر
  • السنة بتتقال منقسمة: nineteen ninety-two مش 1992

نصيحة عملية

لما تحجز أي موعد تليفونياً، جهّز من قبل ما تتصل: اسمك كامل، تاريخ ميلادك، وأعراضك بإختصار. كده هتوفر على نفسك وقت وتبان محترم.

The /θ/ sound is one of the most distinctive sounds in English. It is called a voiceless dental fricative. To break that down: it is made by pushing air through a narrow space, your tongue is near your teeth, and your vocal cords do not vibrate. To produce /θ/ correctly, place the tip of your tongue gently between your upper and lower front teeth, or just behind your upper front teeth. Let air flow smoothly down the centre of your mouth. You should feel a soft, continuous hiss. Do not use your voice — put a hand on your throat while saying th and you should feel no vibration. (Compare this with /ð/ in this or the, where you do feel a vibration.)

Many Arabic speakers replace /θ/ with /t/ or /s/. This can change the meaning of common words: think becomes tink, three becomes tree, and thank becomes tank. In a medical context, confusing these sounds can be embarrassing or even cause misunderstandings. Saying I have a sore troat instead of I have a sore throat sounds unnatural, and a busy receptionist or doctor may not understand you the first time.

The /θ/ sound appears in many everyday English words. Here are some of the most useful ones, especially when you talk about your health or book a medical appointment:

Word Meaning Arabic
throat part inside your neck الحلق
teeth hard white things in your mouth الأسنان
tooth one hard white thing سن
think have an idea in your mind يفكّر
thank say you are grateful يشكر
three the number 3 ثلاثة
healthy feeling well, not ill بصحة جيدة
breath air you take into your lungs نَفَس
bath washing your whole body حمّام
month about 30 days شهر

You can feel the difference physically. Hold your hand about 5 cm in front of your mouth. Say th — you should feel a thin, soft stream of cool air on your hand. Now say t or s — the air is much stronger. The /θ/ sound is gentle, and the airflow is continuous, not stopped like a t.

When you say three in your phone call, your tongue should be visible between your teeth. When you say sore throat, both words start with /θ/, so the airflow is continuous from one word to the next. I have a sore throat is one of the most frequent sentences patients say to a doctor or receptionist, so it is well worth practising.

  • three بتتقال tree
  • thank بتتقال tank

ليه مهم في موضوع الحجز عند الدكتور؟

لو بتتكلم مع موظف استقبال أو دكتور، نطقك لازم يبقى واضح. تخيّل إنك بتقول I have a sore troat بدل

How to make /θ/: Place the tip of your tongue lightly between your upper and lower front teeth. Let a thin stream of air flow out without using your voice. You should feel a soft hiss, not a strong burst of air. Try the words three, think, thank, throat, and teeth.

Required
Audio is being generated — try again in a minute.

Which word do you hear?

  • three
  • tree
Required

Read the phrase aloud. Place your tongue between your teeth for both th sounds and keep the airflow soft and continuous.

sore throat

Required

Read the full sentence aloud. Focus on keeping /θ/ soft and continuous, and remember that temperature also begins with a soft dental sound.

I have a sore throat and a temperature.

Reading

Reading

5 cards

Before you read, here is a useful strategy.

Strategy box — Skimming for gist: When you skim a text, you read the title, the first sentence of each paragraph, and the last paragraph quickly. You do not stop for new words. The aim is to get the general idea of what the text is about. Save the careful reading for the second pass.

Here are some key words that appear in the article. Knowing them in advance will help you skim more confidently:

  • surgery (n.) — a doctor's office where GPs work. I've called the surgery to book an appointment.
  • urgent (adj.) — needs to be dealt with very soon. If your problem is urgent, ask for a same-day appointment.
  • registered (adj.) — officially on the list of patients at a practice. Are you registered with us?
  • slot (n.) — an available time for an appointment. The receptionist offered me a ten o'clock slot.

Now skim the article below and answer the questions that follow.

مثلاً: "I called the surgery to book an appointment" يعني اتصلت بالعيادة عشان أحجز ميعاد.
  • Urgent معناها حاجة محتاجة تتحل بسرعة. مثلاً: "If your problem is urgent, ask for a same-day appointment" يعني لو حالتك مستعجلة، اطلب ميعاد في نفس اليوم.
  • Registered يعني مسجّل رسمياً عند دكتور معين. مثلاً: "Are you registered with us?" يعني أنت مسجّل عندنا في العيادة؟
  • Slot هي الفترة الزمنية المتاحة للموعد. مثلاً: "The receptionist offered me a ten o'clock slot" يعني الموظفة عرضت عليّ ميعاد الساعة عشرة.

نصيحة أخيرة: لما تخلص الـ skim، اسأل نفسك: "الموضوع عن إيه بشكل عام؟" لو عرفت تجاوب، يبقى أنت عملت الـ strategy صح. كده هتقدر تجاوب على أسئلة الـ gist بسهولة، وتجهز نفسك للمرحلة التانية اللي هي الـ reading for detail.

Speaking

Speaking

6 cards

Speaking on the phone in a second language can feel stressful, but a few useful phrases will help you feel ready. The model below shows a short, polite call. Notice the order: greeting → reason for calling → describe the problem → agree on a time → close the call.

Here are the key phrases you will need:

English phrase Function Arabic
Good morning / afternoon, [surgery name]. open the call صباح الخير / مساء الخير
I'd like to make an appointment, please. state your reason أودّ تحديد موعد
I've had a bad headache since yesterday. describe symptoms عندي صداع شديد منذ أمس
I have a sore throat and a temperature. describe symptoms عندي التهاب حلق وحرارة
What time is available? ask about times ما الوقت المتاح؟
That works for me. Thank you. accept a slot يناسبني. شكراً
Thank you very much. Goodbye. close the call شكراً جزيلاً. مع السلامة

In the live roleplay at the end of this section, you will have a real phone call with the receptionist. The receptionist will offer you one or two times, and you can choose. Try to use the polite forms, speak clearly, and remember to give your name and a contact number when asked.

Good morning, Hillview Surgery. How can I help?
  • السبب: I'd like to make an appointment, please.
  • وصف المشكلة: I've had a bad headache since yesterday.
  • الموافقة على الموعد: That works for me. Thank you very much.
  • القفل: Thank you very much. Goodbye.

القواعد المهمة اللي لازم تعرفها

I'd like دي طريقة مؤدبة جدًا بدل I want. معناها "أودّ" وبتستخدم لما تطلب حاجة بأدب من غير ما تبان وقح. تقدر تقول كمان I'd like to see Dr Khan, please لو عايز دكتور معين.

Since معناها منذ وبتيجي دايمًا مع Present Perfect (have/has + verb). لما تقول I've had a headache since yesterday، بتوضح إن الصداع بدأ من إمبارح ولسه موجود. لو قلت I have a headache بس، يبقى بتتكلم عن اللحظة الحالية من غير ما تحدد من إمتى.

Can بتستخدمها لما تطلب حاجة بأدب: Can I see the doctor today? أو Can I have an appointment with Dr Khan?

نصايح للمكالمة الحقيقية

  • اتكلم بوضوح وقول اسمك ورقم تليفونك لما يطلبوه منك.
  • لو مش فاهم الوقت، قوله: Could you say that again, please?
  • لو الموعد مش مناسب، قوله: I'm afraid that doesn't work for me. Is there anything later?
  • متنساش تقفل المكالمة بأدب: Thank you very much. Goodbye.

دلوقتي هتسجّل نفسك وإنت بتقول الجمل دي، وبعدين هتعمل مكالمة حقيقية مع الـ AI اللي هيشغّل دور الريسبشنست. متقلقش لو غلطت، المهم تحاول وتستخدم الجمل المؤدبة اللي اتعلمتها.

Listen to this short model call and notice the polite forms and the order of information.

  1. R
Receptionist Good morning, Hillview Surgery. How can I help?
  2. P
Patient Hello, I'd like to make an appointment, please.
  3. R
Receptionist Is it for today or another day?
  4. P
Patient As soon as possible, please. I've had a bad headache since yesterday.
  5. R
Receptionist I can offer you four o'clock this afternoon with Dr Khan.
  6. P
Patient That works for me. Thank you very much.

I'd like to make an appointment, please.

This is the most common and polite way to start a call to a doctor's surgery. Notice the use of I'd like instead of I want.

Required

Read the opening aloud. Try to sound polite, warm, and natural, as if you were really phoning the surgery.

Hello, I'd like to make an appointment, please.

Required

Read the symptom description aloud. Speak clearly so the receptionist can understand you the first time.

I've had a bad headache since yesterday, and I have a temperature.

Required

You are feeling unwell. You have a sore throat, a headache, and a slight temperature. Phone the surgery and book an appointment. Be polite, ask about available times, and give your name and a contact number when the receptionist asks.

Writing

Writing

6 cards

When you are too ill to go to work, school, or a meeting, it is very common in the UK to send a short message or email to explain what is wrong. The message does not need to be long, but it should include four things:

  1. A polite apology for not being there.
  2. A short explanation of the problem.
  3. A plan — what you are going to do (for example, see a doctor).
  4. A request if you need help (for example, asking someone to cover a meeting).

Here is a model message that follows this structure:

Hi Sam,

I'm really sorry but I won't be able to come to work today. I woke up with a very sore throat and a high temperature, so I think I need to see a doctor. I'll phone the surgery this morning and let you know what's happening. Could you cover the team meeting for me, please?

Thanks, Jamie

Strategy — Using so to give a reason: Notice the sentence I have a sore throat and a temperature, so I need to see a doctor. The word so connects the problem (sore throat, temperature) to the result or plan (see a doctor). Using so makes your writing sound natural and helps the reader understand why you are doing something. You can use the same pattern in your own message: I have a headache, so I'm going to rest at home.

  • a sore throat — زور بيوجعك
  • a high temperature / a fever — حرارة عالية
  • the surgery — العيادة بتاعة الدكتور في بريطانيا
  • to cover a meeting — يحضر الميتنج بدلك
  • to be unwell — تبقى تعبان أو عيان

استراتيجية مهمة: استخدام so

كلمة so بتساعدك تربط بين المشكلة والحل في جملة واحدة. شوف المثال ده من الرسالة: "I have a sore throat and a high temperature, so I think I need to see a doctor." الجملة الأولى بتوصف المشكلة، وso بتوصلك للنتيجة أو الخطة. ممكن تستخدم نفس النمط في رسالتك:

  • "I have a terrible headache, so I'm going to stay at home today."
  • "I feel very dizzy, so I won't be able to drive to the office."

الهيكل الكامل للرسالة:

  1. التحية: "Hi Sam," أو "Dear Jamie,"
  2. الاعتذار والسبب: "I'm really sorry but I won't be able to come to work today. I woke up with a very sore throat."
  3. الخطة: "I'll phone the surgery this morning and let you know what's happening."
  4. الطلب: "Could you cover the team meeting for me, please?"
  5. التوقيع: "Thanks, Jamie"

نصيحة أخيرة:

خلي رسالتك قصيرة ومباشرة، مش لازم تقول تفاصيل طبية كتير. استخدم so عشان تربط الجمل ببعض وتخلي رسالتك تبان طبيعية وسلسة. دلوقتي روح اكتب رسالتك بنفسك!

Using so to give a reason. Connect a problem to a result with so. Structure: I have [problem], so I am going to [plan]. Examples: I have a temperature, so I'm staying at home. / I feel very tired, so I'm going to see a doctor. Using so makes your message sound natural and your reason is clear.

Required

Which word in the model message is used to give a reason?

  • and
  • so
  • but
  • however
Required

The model message uses so to explain why the writer needs to see a doctor.

Write a short message (around 40–60 words) explaining a health problem and what you are going to do. Try to use so to give a reason, and follow the four-part structure: apology, explanation, plan, and request. When you finish, read your message aloud.

Now write your own short message to a colleague or friend.
