The Story
It was a warm evening in July. The Miller family sat in the living room. Dad was reading a newspaper. Mum was watching TV. Children Lily and Tom were playing a board game.
Suddenly, the sky went very dark. The wind began to blow hard. Rain hit the windows like little drums.
"There's a big storm coming," said Dad.
The lights went out. The TV went black. The room was very dark.
"Don't worry," said Mum. "We have candles." She found some candles in the kitchen drawer. She lit them and put them on the table. Now the room was warm and golden.
"What can we do now?" asked Tom.
"We can play games," said Lily. "Let's play hide and seek!"
"No," said Dad with a smile. "Let's play a different game. Let's tell stories." Mum agreed. The children loved this idea.
Dad told a story about a dragon. Mum told a story about a magic garden. Lily told a story about a friendly cat. Tom told a story about a spaceship.
Then they all sang songs together. They sang their favourite songs. Tom sang too loud and everyone laughed.
After that, Mum made hot chocolate on the stove. They drank it slowly. It was warm and sweet.
The storm finished at midnight. The lights came back on. But the Millers were already asleep on the sofa, happy and together.
