The Story

The Great British Bake Swap

The Last Loaf

For thirty years, Mrs. Higginbotham’s bakery had stood on the high street of Little Wapping. Every morning at half past five, the smell of fresh bread drifted through the village like a warm hug. But lately, the shelves stayed full. The new supermarket on the bypass sold cheaper cakes, and fewer people came through the door.

One rainy Tuesday in November, Mrs. Higginbotham was closing early when the bell above the door jingled. A woman in a long green coat stood there, holding a small brown envelope. “I hear you’re the best baker in three counties,” she said. “I’ve got something that might help.”

The Peculiar Recipe

The woman introduced herself as Miss Marjoram. She pulled a yellowed card from the envelope. “My great-grandmother’s secret,” she said. “Sponge cake with lavender and honey. It won a prize at the Great Exhibition in 1851.”

Mrs. Higginbotham read the recipe twice. “It’s unusual,” she admitted. “But I’ll try it tomorrow.” That night, she dreamed of fields of purple flowers and bees that hummed in perfect tune.

The First Bite

The next morning, the cake rose golden in the oven. When she sliced it, the scent filled the shop. By ten o’clock, a queue stretched down the street. People who hadn’t set foot in the bakery for years came back for a second piece. “It’s like sunshine on a plate!” said old Mr. Patel, who ran the newsagent’s.

By lunchtime, the cake was gone. Mrs. Higginbotham phoned Miss Marjoram. “It’s a miracle,” she said. “Can I make more?” Miss Marjoram chuckled. “Of course. But remember—great-grandmother always said the magic is in the first pinch of lavender.”

The Catch

For a week, the bakery buzzed with customers. Then, on Friday, Mrs. Higginbotham noticed something strange. The lavender she’d used was running low, and the new batch from the garden centre didn’t work. The cakes tasted flat. She called Miss Marjoram, but her phone was disconnected.

That evening, Mrs. Higginbotham sat in the empty shop with a cup of tea. She thought about the recipe and the woman in the green coat. Then she remembered something—her own grandmother had grown lavender in the garden behind the bakery. She went outside and dug up a handful of soil. There, beneath the weeds, were the old plants, still alive after all these years.

A New Tradition

The next morning, the bakery smelled of summer again. Mrs. Higginbotham wrote a new sign: “Higginbotham’s Prize-Winning Lavender Sponge—made with Little Wapping lavender since 1851.” By noon, the village had heard the news, and the queue was longer than ever.

Miss Marjoram never returned, but sometimes, when the wind blew from the south, Mrs. Higginbotham caught the faintest scent of lavender on the breeze. She smiled and got back to work.
