The Story

The Mirror of Tomorrow

Every Sunday, Jake loved hunting for bargains at the car boot sale. He enjoyed chatting with sellers and finding hidden treasures. One rainy morning, he spotted an old mirror leaning against a table. It was tall, with a dark wooden frame, and looked like it belonged in a grand house. The seller, an elderly woman, smiled at him.

“That’s a lovely piece,” she said. “Only five pounds. It’s been in my family for years.”

Jake didn’t need a mirror, but he couldn’t resist. He handed over the money and carried it home, careful not to drop it in the drizzle.

That evening, Jake hung the mirror in his hallway. As he stepped back to admire it, he gasped. Instead of his own reflection, he saw a dimly lit room—somewhere he didn’t recognise. A man in a dark coat stood near a window, holding something small and shiny. Then, in the glass, Jake watched as the man turned and walked towards a door… but the door wasn’t there in the reflection. It was like watching a film, but wrong, like a puzzle missing a piece.

The next morning, Jake woke up with a headache. He rubbed his eyes and looked at the mirror again. This time, it showed his hallway as it should. Had he imagined it?

But the following night, the strange reflection returned. This time, Jake saw the same man, but now he was arguing with a woman. She looked frightened. Then, suddenly, the man raised his hand—and Jake saw the shiny object again. It was a knife. Jake’s heart pounded. He wanted to look away, but he couldn’t. The scene played out like a nightmare, and when it ended, the mirror showed his hallway once more.

Jake couldn’t sleep. Was the mirror showing him the past… or the future? The next day, he took a photo of the man’s face from the reflection and showed it to his friend, Priya, a police officer.

“This man looks familiar,” she said, frowning. “He was in the news last week. He’s a person of interest in a missing person case.”

Jake’s stomach twisted. “What if the mirror is showing something that hasn’t happened yet?”

Priya raised an eyebrow. “That’s impossible. But… if you’re right, we might be able to stop it.”

That night, Jake and Priya watched the mirror together. The scene played out just as before—the argument, the knife. But this time, Priya took notes. “That’s the old warehouse on Mill Road,” she said. “If this is real, we need to get there before it’s too late.”

They rushed to the warehouse. Inside, they found the man from the mirror, standing over the frightened woman. Priya acted quickly, calling for backup. The man was arrested, and the woman was safe.

The next morning, Jake looked at the mirror. It showed only his hallway, as it should. He smiled, relieved. Maybe the mirror had done its job. Or maybe, just maybe, some mysteries were better left unsolved.

He decided to keep the mirror. After all, you never know when you might need a little help from tomorrow.
