The Mysterious Morning
Every morning, old Mr. Whitaker walked to the village aviary before breakfast. The colourful birds—parrots, canaries, and finches—always greeted him with cheerful chirps. But on this particular Tuesday, the aviary was silent.
Mr. Whitaker pushed open the door and gasped. The cages stood open, and not a single bird remained. No broken locks, no torn wire—just a single blue feather on the floor and a strange, sweet-smelling substance near the door.
He rushed to the village square and shouted, "The aviary’s been robbed!" Soon, half the village had gathered, whispering and pointing at the empty cages. Young Lily, who helped Mr. Whitaker on weekends, knelt down and sniffed the sticky substance. "It smells like honey… but sweeter," she said.
The Clues Add Up
The village constable, Mr. Briggs, arrived with his notebook. "No signs of a break-in," he muttered. "And why leave a feather?"
Lily examined the feather closely. "This isn’t from any of our birds. It’s too big—maybe from a macaw?" She turned to Mr. Whitaker. "Do you remember that travelling circus that passed through last week? They had exotic birds."
Mr. Whitaker’s eyes widened. "The ringmaster! He asked if I’d sell the aviary. I said no."
Mr. Briggs scribbled in his notebook. "So, someone wanted the birds badly enough to steal them… but how?"
The Sweet Solution
That evening, Lily sat on her porch, thinking. Her little brother, Tom, licked a lollipop nearby. "Why so serious?" he asked.
Lily stared at the lollipop. "Tom… where did you get that?"
"From the sweet shop. It’s a new flavour—tropical honey."
Lily jumped up. "That’s it! The substance in the aviary smelled just like this!" She grabbed Tom’s hand. "Come on, we’re going to the circus!">
At the circus grounds, they found the ringmaster packing up his tent. Lily marched up to him. "You stole the birds, didn’t you? You used tropical honey to lure them out!"
The ringmaster paled. "How did you—?"
Mr. Briggs stepped out from behind a wagon, notebook in hand. "We’ve got you."
A Happy Ending
The next morning, the village gathered at the aviary again. This time, the birds were back in their cages, chirping happily. Mr. Whitaker smiled at Lily. "You’re a detective now, young lady."
Lily grinned. "Just needed to follow the clues… and the sweet smell."
And from that day on, the villagers kept a closer eye on their feathered friends—and any suspicious lollipops.
