The Story

The Mystery of the Missing Market Trader

Every Saturday, the bustling Norwich Market buzzed with life. Among the colourful stalls, one trader stood out—Old Tom, the pie man. His steak and ale pies were legendary, and his stall was always surrounded by hungry customers. But one chilly autumn morning, something was wrong. Old Tom’s stall was shut, the usual aroma of freshly baked pies nowhere to be found.

Megan, a regular customer and local journalist, noticed the empty space first. She frowned at the locked cash box on the counter and the half-eaten pasty left behind. Then she spotted the chalkboard. Instead of today’s specials, Old Tom had scribbled: "Gone to find what’s lost. Back soon—maybe." Megan’s curiosity flared. What could he mean?

The Clues Add Up

Megan decided to investigate. She asked the neighbouring stallholders if they’d seen anything unusual. Mrs. Patel, who sold spices, mentioned Old Tom had been acting strangely all week. "He kept muttering about ‘the old days,’" she said. "And he borrowed my torch last night—said he needed it for something important."

Megan’s mind raced. The old days? A torch? Then she remembered—Norwich had a network of underground tunnels, remnants of medieval times. Some were open to the public, but others were off-limits. Had Old Tom gone exploring?

A Light in the Dark

That evening, Megan grabbed her own torch and headed to the nearest tunnel entrance. The air was damp and cool as she stepped inside. She called out, "Old Tom? Are you here?" Her voice echoed in the darkness. Then, a faint glow flickered ahead. She hurried forward and found Old Tom crouched near a crumbling wall, brushing dust from an old metal box.

"Ah, Megan!" he said, grinning. "Just as I thought—this tunnel leads to the old bakery cellar. I used to work here as a lad, and I always wondered what happened to the baker’s missing recipe book. Turns out, it was hidden here all along!"

Megan laughed in relief. "So that’s what you meant by ‘what’s lost’! But why not tell someone where you were going?"

Old Tom chuckled. "Didn’t want anyone stealing my thunder—or my recipes! Now, help me carry this back. I’ve got a new pie to create—medieval spiced beef, just like the old days."

The next Saturday, Old Tom’s stall was back, and the line was longer than ever. Megan wrote a front-page story about the adventure, and Old Tom’s "Lost and Found Pie" became an instant hit. As for the tunnels? Well, that’s a mystery for another day.
