The Story

The Mystery of the Misplaced Morris Dancers

Every June, the village of Meadowgrove held its famous Summer Festival. Stalls lined the high street, children chased each other with ice creams, and at the heart of it all, the Meadowgrove Morris Men danced. Their bells jingled, their sticks clacked, and the crowd always cheered.

This year, however, something strange happened. The dancers began their usual routine at noon. The fiddler played, the crowd clapped, and the sun shone brightly. Then, halfway through the second dance, the music stopped. The Morris Men were gone. All that remained were their bells, scattered on the ground, and a single note tucked under a hanky. It read: "We’ve gone to the old oak. Don’t follow—unless you dare."

Twelve-year-old Jake Carter had been watching from the front. His grandad was one of the dancers, and Jake knew every step of the routine. "That’s not like them," he muttered. "They’d never just leave."

Jake picked up the note and showed it to his best friend, Priya. She frowned. "The old oak? That’s miles away, in the woods. And why would they go there during the festival?"

The two friends decided to investigate. They grabbed their bikes and pedalled towards the woods. The path was overgrown, and the trees cast long shadows. Jake’s heart pounded. "What if it’s a trick?" he asked.

Priya grinned. "Then we’ll be ready. Come on!"

They reached the old oak just as the sun began to set. The tree was enormous, its branches twisting like ancient fingers. And there, sitting in a circle beneath it, were the Morris Men—laughing, eating sandwiches, and looking completely unharmed.

"Grandad!" Jake shouted. "What’s going on? Everyone’s worried sick!"

The dancers exchanged glances. Grandad sighed. "We didn’t mean to cause a fuss. We just wanted to teach the village a lesson."

Priya crossed her arms. "A lesson?"

Grandad nodded. "Every year, the festival gets bigger, noisier, and more crowded. We love dancing, but we missed the quiet, the old traditions. So we decided to remind everyone what really matters—community, not just spectacle."

Jake thought about it. The festival had felt different this year—less about the village, more about the tourists. "So… you’re not in danger?"

"Not at all," said Grandad. "But we are hungry. How about you two help us finish these sandwiches, and then we’ll head back together?"

The next morning, the Meadowgrove Morris Men danced again—but this time, they invited everyone to join in. The festival felt smaller, warmer, and just a little bit magical. And as for Jake and Priya? They were already planning their next adventure.
