The Story

The Vanishing of the Village Vicar’s Vestments

Reverend Thomas Green had one golden rule: never panic. But on the eve of St Mary’s Harvest Festival, panic was exactly what he felt. His best chasuble—the rich purple one with gold embroidery—had vanished from the vestry. Without it, tomorrow’s service would be like a cake without icing: perfectly fine, but somehow all wrong.

“Where on earth could it be?” he muttered, checking under the altar cloth for the third time. The only clue was a trail of silver glitter that sparkled across the flagstones like a mischievous breadcrumb trail. It led straight to the narrow door of the church tower.

Thomas hesitated. The tower was strictly out of bounds after dark—too many loose stones and too many stories of villagers hearing strange noises up there. Still, the chasuble had to be found. He took a deep breath, grabbed a torch from the cupboard, and stepped inside.

The spiral staircase creaked under his shoes. Higher and higher he climbed, the glitter glinting in the torchlight. Halfway up, he heard a soft rustling sound. He froze. “Hello?” he called. No answer. Then, from the shadows, a pair of bright eyes blinked at him.

“Oh!” Thomas gasped. It was little Lily Carter, the seven-year-old daughter of the village baker. She was sitting on the top step, hugging the missing chasuble like a blanket. Around her lay scraps of silver paper, scissors, and glue.

“Lily, what are you doing here?” Thomas asked gently.

Lily sniffed. “I wanted to make the service extra special. Mummy said the chasuble was the most beautiful thing in the church, so I thought… I thought if I covered it in stars, it would look like the night sky. But then I got scared of the dark, and I couldn’t come down.”

Thomas’s heart softened. He sat beside her and wrapped the glittery chasuble around both their shoulders. “It is beautiful, Lily. But you know, the best part of the service isn’t the vestments—it’s the people. Still, I think your stars are a wonderful idea. How about we finish them together?”

By dawn, the chasuble was covered in tiny silver stars, and Lily was fast asleep in her mother’s arms. When the villagers arrived for the Harvest Festival, they gasped at the transformed robe. “It’s like wearing the heavens themselves!” whispered old Mrs Higgins.

Thomas smiled. The service was more special than ever, and from that day on, the church tower was no longer out of bounds—so long as you brought a torch, a friend, and perhaps a sprinkle of glitter.
