The Story

The Forgotten Railway

When the five students from Cardiff University arrived at the abandoned station of Rhandir, they expected dust, decay, and perhaps a few weeks of hard physical work. What they hadn't expected was to stumble upon a mystery that had remained buried for over a century.

The Victorian railway line had closed in 1932, its last passenger train departing on a cold December evening. Since then, nature had slowly reclaimed the tracks, and the station building had fallen into ruin. Moss covered the platforms, and ivy had consumed the waiting rooms. The students set up their base camp in the old ticket hall, clearing away decades of debris and cobwebs.

It was Sarah, the history student among them, who first noticed the hidden room behind the stationmaster's office. The door had been painted over so many times that it had become invisible. Inside, they found boxes filled with old photographs, letters, and railway documents dating back to the 1880s.

As they carefully examined the contents, a story began to emerge. The railway had been built to serve the nearby mining village of Rhandir, which had once housed over three hundred souls. The station had been the community's lifeline, connecting them to the wider world. But by the 1920s, the mines had closed, and the village had slowly emptied.

The locals spoke of a ghost, Sarah discovered. They called her the Lady in Grey. According to legend, she had been a young woman named Megan Thomas who had died on the line in 1912. Some said she had slipped under a train. Others claimed she had walked into the fog intentionally, overcome by a grief that no one understood.

The students laughed at first. Ghost stories were for children, after all. But then the strange things began to happen.

It started small. Tools would be moved overnight. Lanterns that had been carefully stored would be found scattered across the platform. One night, Thomas woke to hear singing coming from the direction of the old tunnel. He crept outside and stood listening, certain that someone was humming a Welsh lullaby somewhere in the darkness. Yet when he called out, the singing stopped immediately.

A few days later, Emma spotted her. It was early morning, and the mist hung thick over the valley. Emma was walking toward the station when she saw a figure standing at the end of the platform. A woman in a long grey dress. Before Emma could speak, the figure turned and vanished into the wall.

After that, none of them could deny what they had seen. The haunting, if that was what it was, continued throughout their stay. Wind instruments played by themselves. Footsteps echoed in empty corridors. And always, that feeling of being watched from the edge of the fog.

The students decided to learn more about Megan Thomas. With the help of the parish records and the letters they had found, they pieced together her story. She had been engaged to a young miner named William Evans, but he had died in a pit collapse in 1910. The letters revealed that Megan had been pregnant when William died, and her family had pressured her to end the engagement and marry someone else. By the time she died under the train in 1912, she had lost everything that mattered to her.

Understanding replaced fear. The students realised that whatever walked the tracks was not a malevolent spirit but a soul in sorrow. Megan was not haunting the railway; she was returning to it, because the railway had been where she last felt truly happy with William.

In their final week, the students held a small memorial. They cleared a space on the platform and laid down wildflowers they had picked from the hillside. Sarah read aloud from one of Megan's letters, a message she had written to William the week before his death. The words spoke of dreams and plans and the life they would build together.

As the sun set behind the mountains, the students sat in silence. And for just a moment, a lantern that had been extinguished suddenly flickered back to life, casting warm light across the old platform. Whether this was a sign or merely coincidence, they preferred to believe that Megan had finally found peace.

The students never completed the full restoration of the line. Other volunteers continued the work, and eventually, the railway became a heritage attraction for tourists. But every year, on the anniversary of Megan's death, a single bunch of flowers appears on the platform. No one knows who leaves them.
